30sec-1min sprint followed by 5 minute walk, then repeat, etc
That "sounds" like someone's implying HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)....but the "intervals" described are too long for a rest period.

You may burn more calories, but less of those calories are from fat. Low intensity workouts burn a greater % of calories from fat.
You burn the same amount of calories. THIS is where what's going INTO your body is so important. How/When you train is also important (fasted v. non-fasted).....and training "right" is important. Cardio shouldn't be done for more than 45minutes....or you WILL be burning muscle. Jury's still out on fasted cardio...and I do it a few times a week. I make sure I do that protein thing when I do. I'll take my chances.

I lost weight at a VERY fast pace in 2004 (from just under 230 to 191). It was amazing. I was also running 5mi. on an empty stomach....first thing in the morning. I lost a ton of lean muscle doing this....and I'm not going to go that route, again. Like I said....I don't care if I lose another pound....as long as I replace what I'm losing with LM....I couldn't care less.
Sorry, typo...meant to say you may burn the same amount, but high intensity workouts will burn less calories from fat (which is what Drop said) than low intensity "aerobic" exercises.

That's a starting figure for someone beginning. The time split between walking/sprinting can be reduced as one progresses.

I start walking around April in work 3 miles a day. Then in June through the whole summer I ride my bike 15 miles 5 days a week til hunting season. I always keep my legs in the best possible shape. When the legs go it all about over!!! Im 49 and I still can climb the hills with the best of them!

Biking is a great workout. I would love to get a decent road bike and start incorporating that. Heck, 49 isn't old, especially if you're still working out like that, I hope I still can.

Understood

I start out (HIIT)doing a 5 min warm-up on the treadmill at speed 6mph. I then do a minute on 9mph.....then rest1.5 minutes, waling on 3mph. I repeat this for 10 "cycles". I agree that what you described is a starting point....and Ididn't start where I am, either. It's taken me 5 weeks to get there....and my Low Intensity steady state runs (3.5mi'ers) are helping me progress with the HIIT, I know.

Gary (Germ) is a personal trainer in one of his other lives.I know he'd be glad to help anyone out who's interested in making a lifestyle change, too. I called him a few months back and told him I wanted to lose 10 lbs. in 2 weeks. He wouldn't even talk to me about it. I know, now, why.

Thanks, buddy.

I forgot Germ does this stuff as well. Maybe he will chime in here with a few pointers.

Jeff, what kind of workouts did you and your team do in college?

Gary this is the best advice i have heard on here for awhile at 42 Im still down about 40# from 1 1/2 years ago and feeling great weighing in about 195 ,still hiting the weights (what the shoulder will allow) I drink water like it is going out of style, gave up pop. My bench was real close to 250 before my shoulder injury with the trash bag Now i gotta go lighter until i get it fixed (shooting for Dec) like i said great advice, just the water intake alone makes a hugh difference, you notice it when your using a climber. the sweating is reduced way down

MG...we had a strength coach....but it was nothign to brag about (our workouts). He was hired to work with the football team....and our workouts were geared towards "them" more than "us". Don't get me wrong....I got strong (315 max bench for a 200#'er)...but we never worked on flexibility......and I feel like our injury history reflected that (I feel that way, now).

If I had it to do over, again....and had NO direction......I'd work more on more reps and flexibility. And CORE....as a catcher in college....I lost 20#'s throughout the season (caught 55 games my senior year). Again...I'd work on core and flexibility (and endurance) a LOT more.....were I to be "back there".

Good luck to you! Germ is a great asset. Hit him up!
