RE: Maximum KE out of short draw length??
Atlasman,
I, too, have a short drawlength (27" ) and have spent a good deal of time looking into my KE. I currently shoot a Q2 @ 65 lbs and ACC arrow @ 395 grains. My arrow speed is 250 fps and my KE is 54-55 ft-lbs. With this set up, and others in the past (that had much less speed & KE) I' ve had no problem getting passthough' s. Heck, I got a passthrough on my first buck years ago, with a 2-wheel bear bow set at 56 lbs. I' ve taken all my deer with 100 gr. fixed blades- Muzzy, Wasp SST, Thunderheads, and Rocky Mountains. The only buck I' ve lost happened when I used a Spitfire (1-1/2" cut) several years ago, at the time I didn' t even know what Kinetic Energy was! At the time I used the Spitfire my KE was 41 ft lbs[:o]........right then and there I promised myself I would learn more about my set up and what I needed to do to improve it. Find out what your arrow weighs and figure your KE....everyone should know this. Unfortunately, it' s not as simple as just changing your arrow(s) and/or arrow weight. Like others have said, your options are: 1) Buy a different bow that stores/creates more energy than your current bow 2) Turn your bow up I' d recommend a quality 100 gr. fixed blade, there are plenty to choose from. Find out which one flies good from your setup and go with it. Make sure your bow is tuned and your arrows are flying straight....you should have no problem at all getting passthroughs.:D This site may help you: http://www.bowjackson.com/ Best of luck, Two Beards |
RE: Maximum KE out of short draw length??
Atlas....alot of good advice above...
If it was me, I' d crank it to 70, and use a Magnus Stinger' s (100gr). |
RE: Maximum KE out of short draw length??
Thanks guys.
For starters I will not be buying a new bow any time soon. I have only owned my TRX for 1 year and I have yet to hold/shoot a bow that felt nearly as good to me I do need to figure out my exact arrow weight. I have it estimated at +/- 320 grains. Which at 250 fps gives me 44lbs KE. That needs to come up. Like I said that is an estimate and I will weigh the arrows to be sure. I also figure by tinkering with my setup I could probably squeeze out up to 275fps but that will most likely be the max. I am going to experiment this year with various broadheads and see how they fly. If I can get a head like the Steelforce or Magnus to fly perfectly I will use them and see what if any change they make. After all my shot last year did go all the way through to the opposite hide and the damage was impressive upon inspection but the blood trail could have been easily lost if I had not known what to do. I really think I am close to the power I desire so my goal is to increase my draw weight to what I can handle comfortably and do what else I can to up my speed. This combined with a fixed head, perhaps cut on contact.......should put me where I want to be. I just don' t want to be one of those guys flailing all over the range trying to pull a bow that is waaaaay to heavy for them and when they release the arrow it sounds like a firecracker going off............My setup is quiet, silky smooth and I can draw it sitting flat on my butt. Hope it stays that way. |
RE: Maximum KE out of short draw length??
Atlasman,
Though I cannot personally attest to it, I have seen several folks comment about certain release types that make it feel easier to pull back any given draw weight. This might be something you want to pursue further if you are going to increase your draw weight gradually and yet still feel relatively comfortable with your setup. A new thread might be in order. Just a suggestion. Hope that it helps. |
RE: Maximum KE out of short draw length??
Atlasman,
If you feel confident that you can make any shot happen with your present setup then don' t change! Adding a fixed blade head will give you the penetratrion you want. Shooting a fixed blade head will show any flaws in your form and make you a better shooter. My longtime huntin buddie has killed many bucks with his rig that produces 45ft/lbs KE all clean passthu' s to 35yds using 100gr 4bl muzzys. He also beats up the 3D course only shooting 235fps. Puttem in the K-ZONE ,AL:D |
