KE so high......through 2 deer?
I' m just curious.......What KE level do you have to worry about shooting through a second deer standing behind one your aiming at? My KE is about 63 and I am getting fabulous penetration with a 1 3/4" mecanical Wasp Jackhammer. Two buddies of mine, just got Bowtech VFT Samson 80 lb. rigs. Their KE between 89 and 91. Holly Cow!! Just curious.....should they be worried about other deer in the area?
Good Luck! |
RE: KE so high......through 2 deer?
THey should be worried about military heat sensing satellites more than other animals. ;):D
Actually I' m in the same boat as I haven' t had a set-up in the last 6 years shooting under mid 70ft lbs of KE. My set up this year of a Dually Patriot is cranking out 87 ft lbs of KE and that' s at 30" /70# [8D] Let' s see.......I shot thru my buck last season from a ground blind at about 17 yards with 76ft lbs of KE, and found my arrow 47 paces on the other side?..........and that was with a 4 blade Rocket Sidewinder?.........So I would have to say that with the right broadhead, and my 87ft lbs?.........I could probably shoot thru an entire herd if I got them to line up properly;)[:o] I love overkill and the options it provides in equipment selection. I have the draw length and the ability to draw heavier draw weights with ease so I' m gonna stinkin' use em' !.........thanks mom for the genes.:) There' s One word that I will never see used to describe my hunting set-ups and that is MARGINAL. I guess I should ad (lest someone think otherwise)......I would never shoot at an animal that had one directly on the otherside where it would be in danger of a pass thru hit, and I would expect that from everyone here! Which actually isn' t too much of a problem from 22ft up unless the 2nd deer is crawling alongside the first.:D |
RE: KE so high......through 2 deer?
1) Don' t shoot a deer with another behind it in line with the shot. First rule of shooting is to know what' s beyond your target.
2) Purely for hypothetical purposes...a well-tuned recurve or longbow with 30 foot pounds of Ke could blow through a second deer. JRW |
RE: KE so high......through 2 deer?
I gotta go with what JRW said here...If you slip one between the ribs, through both lungs, it doesn`t take much of a bow to get a passthru.
Always watch for the deer, or anything behind your target. |

RE: KE so high......through 2 deer?
Theortically I think it is possible with a 63 ft. lb setup provided there are certain assumptions....perfect shot placement on both deer and a cut on impact or trocar style tipped broadhead. I think most expandables might loose too much KE after going through the first deer. Ofcourse, that will depend on individual setup, shot placement, etc....

RE: KE so high......through 2 deer?
I was curious about this too. I understand/adopt the ethical issues of safe shooting but what about if you live in MA like I do where you can take two deer at once? Is there a set up of KE where you could have the confidence to accomplish this with one shot? The set-ups spoken of sound impressive, I wonder if it would work. I haven' t timed my bow and most likely wouldn' t try it anyway. Just one of those daydreaming theories hypothesized during many hours in a tree stand.

RE: KE so high......through 2 deer?
You can' t take two deer at once with confidence because you don' t know how an arrow is going to act coming out of the first deer. Even if you have both animals lined up perfectly, how do you KNOW the arrow isn' t going to deflect on a bone on the first animal and gutshot the next one? How do you KNOW the broadhead won' t get damaged on the first deer and be in just good enough shape to wound the next one?
Don' t even think about it. |
RE: KE so high......through 2 deer?
I agree with Author p. don' t even think of doing or trying it.I shot a buck at 25 yards and the arrow was in a bank about 10 yards behind the deers ribs and it was in the bank up to the vanes.so I would think it would have gone through another deer if every thing was perfect.
" IF EVERYTHING IS PERFECT" .. I would not do it myslef. |
RE: KE so high......through 2 deer?
It' s stupid to attempt shooting two with the same arrow at the same time. That arrow might go through the first one just fine and usually does. BUT, it has really lost a lot of energy. We have to worry about an animal moving as it is, who wants to worry about two moving. I suspect you' ll get more BAD results than good. AND, the kill zone is not that big. Trying to line up 2 eight inch pie plates 2 or 3 yards apart on targets that move is something only a Byron Ferguson should be trying. I usually don' t tell people what they should consider and not consider an ethical shot but, in this case I' ll make an exception. Dumb idea.
