Wood Ticks

Well I went out this weekend to check out the woods we hunt.
We had 6 guys in the group, in the wood for two hours and we had at least 100 wood ticks crawling up our pantlegs in that length of time. We all sprayed the crap out of ourselves with deep woods off but these little buggers seemed immune, ive never seen so many ticks in my life, what is the deal? How do I keep these things off. I swear every 20 steps at least 3 of us had 3-4 crawling up our pants. we were walking the logging trails so we werent going through deep brush mabye 7" high in the highest parts. It was straight out of a horror movie except the spiders were replaced with blood suckers. Man are they this bad everywhere in Wisconsin?

I wear rubber boots when I go out and tuck my pants legs inside the boots. I still get a few ticks on me, but not as many as those that don't wear rubber boots. I have a buddy of mine that tapes his pants legs around the outside of his boots, this helps also.

I went out and scouted a spot about a week and a half ago and I had at least 40-50 on just me. I use the boot tuck thing and tuck my shirt in. Sometimes I'll tape my cuffs on my shirt sleeves and pants as well. Underarmor and long socks will also help without having to go tranny like DT suggested.

Personally I think he just likes to dress in ladies underwear.;)J/K bud.

I used Repel Permanone this year during Turkey season and never got one wood tick. You can only spray it on your clothes because it's so strong. It works wonders.

I do this every year in tick season. It is not 100% but it is close. The only down fall is you will smell like a stripper.

You can make your own tick repellent by adding 10 drops of pure rose geranium oil to two tablespoons of witch hazel oralmond oil in a bottle. Cover and shake to blend. Put a few drops on your wrists before going in tick-infested areas. The smell is okay, slightly lemony.

This stuff is fantastic. The area I live in has a VERY high concentration of ticks, and usually most people have them after the local 3D shoots. I use the Permanone stuff as shown in the pic above and have yet to get a tick on me while I was wearing it. I've seen others at the same shoots with 20-30 ticks on them and I don't even have one. It's great stuff.

I once heard that frequent control burning would help keep the number of ticks down.

Spray it on your clothes and put them in a Trash bag the night before you go out. It works Great!!

I learned that back when I was judging hounds in AKC licensed trials;)

A good trick:

Put on a pair of womans stockings under your jeans. When you get home, strip out of your clothing and hang them outside(ticks will eventually fall off or get blown off. Take the stockings and throw them away.

Duranon is a GREAT tick repellant.

I've been getting hit pretty hard with the ticks, too. Its just part of the gig...
Isn't this what Jason Giambi (Yankees) does when he is a batting slump???
I heard if you stand on one foot, and jump up and down forty 42 seconds and tap the top of your head while doing this...
What about garlic around your neck, it's supposed to work on Dracula??

Sorry I had to joke, it just struck me funny

I can't wait until the lyme disease vaccine becomes available.

Thanks guys, Man my skin has been crawling since the weekend! I was going to ask if the Repel was scented. This is going to be my first bow hunt / normally hunt rifle, and all those ticks had me wondering if I really wanted to put up with that. You really dont see that many ticks come winter in Wisconsin.

Hey Noah I used that lastnight when I went fishing on the Black River....works great! Except for the tick I pulled off my neck lastnight and the one on my arm....but im sure I picked them up before I sprayed down and put my coat on.

Could you imagine what you happen if we/I attempted a controlled burn in our area ? Every fire dept in the state would be here and trying to "control" our controlled fire. It would look like a circus..Haha, I've gotta do it.
You've got to love the New Jersey volunteer fire departments. The Bud brewery in Newark would have to divert all shipments to the firehouses for about a week afterward.

Ask him how long until the vaccine comes out. That's something that we all could use.

Ya, right! I think I'll just deal with the ticks instead.
BTW there must be other forums for guys that do this sort of thing

The repel works great. When it dries it is non-scented. I've had deer walk up to within a few yards without spooking. Knock wood, I haven't found one tick on me all turkey season.

There is a vaccine and it's available here in KY.

The only control that would come from that situation would be the police controlling you in handcuffs into the back of their car. Besides most of the spots I have are so small that a controlled burn would be the size of a campfire.:D

Now that is funny right there. But hey if the Marines are doing it that's gotta count for at least a few man points.
