RE: Anonymous Poll.....

This sounds like a quarterof two in the morning set-up thread.:D:DNo, I wouldn't take him. Here's the deal. First of all, we don't have "earn a buck" here in Pa, although I sure wish we did!!! They complain we have too many deer in my area (5-D, where you can get unlimited doe tags!), so "earn a buck" would serve to take down deer numbers, and at the same time give more bucks a chance to reach "maturity". That's another story.
Anyway, back to the question.I think what it gets down to is hunter ethics, or lack there of. If I took that buck under those conditions, I would feel guilty knowing I did it illegally. I couldn't look at him mounted on my wall and be proud of him! Where I hunt, there would be at least a fair chance of getting caught anyway.:D

RE: Anonymous Poll.....

It'd be hard, but I'd probably have to pass too. Killing a Buck illegally is killing a buck illegally. If you would take him without a tag for him, why not start a month before season and get an early start on him? How about taking him at dark? Driving down the road and see him in rifle season, why not take him then?

I gotta agree with Early, I wouldn't be able to be proud of that mount, which would ruin that buck for me. I'd give him a pass and wait till after I got me a nanny. Luckily, KY doesn't have earn a buck, nor does it need it either really.

I would shoot him in a heart beat , earn a buck is Bull sh!t and forces guys to break the law .
Here in PA is a great example of whats wrong withthe one size fits all deer management plan.If you live in the blacktop world on a 1/2 acre lot I'm sure it makes sense. Its my land and I will manage it how I see fit not some desk dweller in Harrisburg who is impressed more by cucumber roots than deer.[:o]

I think earn a giraffe is a better idea.;)

I voted, BUT, IL is not an EAB state, and I have never hunted in one.

Whether bawanajims post is complete satire or not, I can see what he's saying. EAB probably really sucks during the first week or so of season.:D

That, and I don't like somebody trying to tell me which deer is more legal to kill than another.

Because some of us know our herd dynamics and capacity better than some desk jockey several hundred miles away who's interest is based more on timber industryreturns than land owners goals.

Ihave aboutthe sameinterest in the killing of a doe as a trailer dweller does in dry basements.

Entirely correct Jeff! It depends only on how weak the person is, and in the 'best' case senario - if they can stand looking at a awesome deer on their wall and always be reminded they took it ILLEGALY. That would shame me, personally.

RE: Anonymous Poll.....

I agree with Bawanajim about EAB being a load of BS. Thankfully I don't live in an EAB state or have ever hunted in an EAB state.

IMO a much better plan than EAB would be to issue specific tags for specific areas of the state. If the NW region of a state is over run with does and has nothing but small bucks then issue one buck tag and five doe tags. Allow the hunter to purchase more tags only after they have used up all of their original tags.

If the SW region of a state has a pretty good doe to buck ration then issue a buck tag for every one or two doe tags.

Actually...I'll just keep it anonymous. :D

But I will say..If its a buck I knew..He lives in the area, I see him alot and have cam photos..He gets a pass, no question about it. Cuuuuzz thats a BIG fine.
Well this just begs for the question:

What if it is buck you don't know, a random wanderer, a once in a lifetime sighting buck. One that you have never seen before andwill probably never see again. Does that change your answer? ;)

Wow Jim, you are on fire today. I see your point and somewhat agree with it. Unfortunately, the law is the law and if EAB is the law I have to pass on that deer. If I shot him it would be poaching and as others said I could never look at it as any kind of accomplishment other than "getting away with it."

I love the barndoor comment.;)

If Im alone no/yes? I think if you're with someone who already took his doe you're set.....buddy system....

If I'm alone.....NO. with someone YES, but hopefully they earned their buck and haven't taken it yet.

I mean if you're talking about just cutting it up at your place, but if you want it mounted, youll need a tag etc....so now you're alone and have a buck on the ground and need to harvest a doe ASAP and call in and earn your buck tag? way too much going on to just take him without someones buck tag around....

in some states tags are transferrable which is nice in some ways because of the buddy system etc....

say you get 1 buck tag and your friend already took a nice buck, and you still havent, whether its abuddy or father.....I say hey if monster walks by take him, but not 150" monster....180" monster, etc...stuff like that it makes sense, but for the poacher who just shoots anything and everything then goes and finds tags from people, that's not right.

I'd say it depends.....if someone near you had a buck tag, that would help, if not it would suck....

In IL all deer are called in. I've heard it more than once that if we go to EAB, a lot of guys will be calling in does on opening morning.

Problem solved before you climb out of the tree.

When are we going to say enough of the B.S. and get back to enjoying hunting with out the fear of violating some one elses ideas on how, when and why we do it?
do you mean back to times like these:

Late 1800's
During this historical period, about 1850 to 1900, we saw an exploitation of the whitetail deer by hunters who hunted for profit, much like the Buffalo hunters. They were almost hunted to extinction, primarily for the venison meat. Railroads with refrigerated cars were available to bring the venison to many markets throughout the country. Venison was considered a delicacy of sort, many families served venison at special occasions, like Christmas. Demand for deer meat, venison, grew and markets sold what they could get. As the deer populations decreased, laws were passed to help protect whitetails. These laws were not enforced very well or taken very seriously. Bounties were paid, by governments, for killing and trapping the natural predators of the whitetail deer like wolves and mountain lions. It wasn't until the federal "Lacey Act" of 1900-which prohibited interstate traffic in wild game taken in violation of state law, that there was any effective legislation passed. The "Lacey Act" was meant to help protect and restore the whitetail deer, along with other game animals and birds. Also at this historical time, deer hunting activity and pressure decreased because the whitetail deer were becoming scarce. At the turn of the century, in 1900, estimates of our nations total whitetail deer herd were about 500,000 animals (that's less than half of what Minnesota has today, in 2006). By this time very few hunters were hunting the whitetail deer.
