atlatl
If they had a one to two week pre hunting season that you could only use an atlatl would you use one ? or not (maybe to primative or something else .state what) |
RE: atlatl
You better believe it......:D
I was a short lived college baseball pitcher with an honest 90mph fastball.(albeit I didn't always know EXACTLY where it was going) 17 years later I can still scoot it up there in the low 80's. LOL :) I seem to have a knack for instinctive shooting and was blessed with a heck of an arm, so bring on the Atlatl. |
RE: atlatl
I lived with the Aboriginesback homefor 18 months, those guys could not only throw a spear very simular to that but also could hit a pig while the thrower was in a full sprint.
I have tried it and was lucky to hit the broad side of a barn while I was standing still:D |

You bet I would give it a try!!
|
RE: atlatl
hell no i wouldnt use one
|
RE: atlatl
If I knew how to use one SURE!!!:D

RE: atlatl
I shoot a selfbow with arrows I've made and obsidian heads I knapped. Thats pretty primative. I'm not sure one of those would be something I could be acurate with at any distance. Pluss think of the movement needed to throw one of those and how fast a deer moves...I'm thinking these were used to wound an animal and then track it until it died or got so weak they could put a killing shot on an animal. ...Remember when these where used there was no thought of how humane you killed an animal it was how hungry you were.

RE: atlatl
:Di would use one im always up for new challenges
|
RE: atlatl
I would give it a try if I had the time to get good with it.

RE: atlatl
At the balt trad classic this weekend, I saw the national champion using one. Didn't know they had a champion. But anyway, he was only like 14 and was hitting targets 100 yards away. Pretty cool

RE: atlatl
It's a really cool weapon and it's deadly as all hell in the right hands.I tried one a few years ago and apparently,I didn't have the right hands 'cause that was hard to get any kind of accuracy with it.I've seen skilled and well-practiced throwers and if I was as good as them,I'd give it a shot
|
RE: atlatl
I'd have to practice with it quite a bit before I'd go after game with it, but then I had to do the same with any weapon I currently use. I recently spoke with a gent who owned one at a local festival, he said that with practice you could pick it up fairly quickly and expect reasonable accuracy. He was able to keep it inside a 9" paper plate at 30 yards after his first day.

One of my shooting buddies made one and brought it into the shop to try it. OMG it is freaking hard!!! Anyone who can take an animal with one of those has ALL my respect. Im sure with lots of practice one could get good. But its would be pretty cool to hunt with one if you really to get in touch with the primitive hunter in all of us. |
RE: atlatl
Matt should we change your nickname to "Wild Thing" LOL[8D] I think I said "Whoops, Sorry bout' that" more than a couple times. LOL Not sure I'd want to see an Atlatl arrow in the earhole? |
RE: atlatl
I would use one, but only if I were hunting with a few other people...to help me track.
|
RE: atlatl
can that actually kill a deer?
|
RE: atlatl
Yeah theres a vid of some kid spearing somepenned up animal. Theres a thread around here, caused quite the spat :D
|
RE: atlatl
Looks like a interesting weapon but I don't think that I would be interested enough in learning to use one well enough to ever hunt with it.

RE: atlatl
Yes, if I could get proficient enough, I'd probably try it out to hunt with. I threw some javalin in college.
|
RE: atlatl
I would like to try one some day. I think with a bunch of practice you could get fairly accurate with one. I think it is more deadly than most think . when thrown the shaft flexes and loads up the power. it goes at a pretty good speed, faster than you can throw a spear.

RE: atlatl
Gotta laugh when I see people question their lethality. Atlatls were in use long before bows, bringing down creatures as big as mammoths. Several mammoth skeletons have been found, in fact, with flint atlatl dart heads embedded in the bone. The darts weigh a several thousand grains, for Heavens sake!
I watched a guy at a trad shoot one year throwing darts with one. As we walked up to the deer target, I expected we'd pause at 10 or 15 yards for him to throw. Nope. We stopped at 40. First throw landedin the shoulder. Next, in the neck. Next, just behind the shoulder. All undoubtedly killing hits, with each one nearly taking the target right off its stakes. Pretty impressive to see someone experienced using one. I made an atlatl from osage and an antler tine, and darts from bamboo stakes. At first, I was horrible with it. But after a few sessions, I slowly started to get the knack. Unfortunately finally I split all of my darts in the socket and haven't taken the time to make more. (I suspect the angle of the antler tine in the stick may be too acute.) If legalized in PA, then yes, I think I would buckle down, learn, and try it. Even if I couldn't find the time or get proficient myself, I'd love to see what some of PA's atlatl die-hards could do! |

I hit 89 several times my senior year and into college, but never did break the barrier.... but... I was a spot pitcher ;). Key word being, was, not sure about now after the rotator cuff surgery. |
RE: atlatl
A rope and a knife are a lot more challenging.

RE: atlatl
I always thought a spear would be as humane as an arrow but this video changed my mind a bit.
I don't think this is totally balanced but it is quite shocking. Be warned it is very graphic though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GvVN...elated&search= |
