RE: Trail cam setups?
I have a reconyx setup at a crossing that is hopefully going to produce the buck shown below this year. I have a Leaf River camera on the way that is going to be put on a salt lick Memorial Day weekend. I have another Leaf river should be here by July going to be putat a creekcrossing in small stretch of red oaks.

RE: Trail cam setups?
I've never used one yet. I plan on buying a couple in the next week or two and putting them on the new land N of Abilene. I have seen some big bodied deer out there but I want a better look. One will be on a trail the other a waterhole.

RE: Trail cam setups?
Make sure your faster camera is on the trail.

RE: Trail cam setups?
I have 2 Moultrie I40s out. One is in a bottom where 4 trails come together coming off the hills. The other is on a trail that goes around the enda deep ravine. I am getting a few pics but not as many asI thought I would on these beaten down trails. It might have something to do with turkey season just being over and hunters in the woods disturbing them. Or maybe they are seasonal trails.
In IL we're not allowed to put out minerals or feed for the deer. They don't want the deer concentrated in one spot spreading CWD. Which has never been found, except in far Northern IL. I'll post some pics later I got from the last couple of weeks. |
RE: Trail cam setups?
I'm only putting out one Cuddeback EXcite in my area this season. It's public land and I wouldn't chance putting out more than one because of expense. I've used 2 35mm Deer Cams in the past, but they were much cheaper.I've yetto have one stolen, but I'm pretty careful where I locate them.
I put it right where I hunt, so what I see is what's in the imediate (sp) area. No real problems with spooking them either. I put it about thigh height, and it works well. I'm hunting an edge where a huge thicket meets the woods. It's somewhat of a staging area as they come from the thicket to the woods. I seem tohave thebest results (hunting)in the evening, but get great pics 24/7.Here's apic. ![]() |

RE: Trail cam setups?
Well, I am currently down to one camera, but I plan on adding another to the stable this summer.
Now that I am done with turkey hunting and I won't have time to take my girl out chassing the birds, I am gonna put my feeder up and place my Cuddeback C3000 over it too monitor antler growth till mid-summer, and after that it will be moved to early season food sources (clover fields), and before archery season it will be going to a community scrape area. I am gonna be picking up the new Reconyx camera, it is pricey at $600, but the trigger speed is supposed to be 1/10th of a second [:-] |
RE: Trail cam setups?
Im down to 3 cameras now.2 older stealth cams and 1 cuddeback no flash.Im really disapointed with the cuddebacks IR the Expert with flash is better.I usually dont put anything out but I thought I would try some Deer Kane.I usually setup my cams on field edges and watering holes.I think I get better pictures when I just randomly mount the camera along a trail or funnel.I have been having some problems with someone messing around with the Deer Kane block I put out.I checked my cameras today and I caught them. The blonde kid is the sheriffs son lucky for me his Dadis on my side he loves hunting to so I hope the kidsstay away.

RE: Trail cam setups?
Right now I am running 7 cams, I have 4 feed sites that are covered by camera, a water hole and a couple feeders that are covered by camera's. I will soon be moving them to trails after I start seeing some well developed antlers......Right now the protein sites are a good place to see the antlers coming in.....

RE: Trail cam setups?
I currently have one Leaf River, and one Moultrie D-40. I'm planning to add at least 4x more of the D-40's to my arsenal before July or so. Currently both my Leaf River and D-40 are out, but the batteries are dead in both. I've gotta pull them and plan to put a good6-8 cameras out on the property starting in probably July.
I will likely be setting 2x up on corn feeders, 1 up on a funnel that pours into a field (will probablyput a mineral lick right there too), and another up on a hard terrain pinch point that gets heavy traffic. I've usually only put them in areas that are easy to get to and over corn, this works to gettons of doe pics, but I'm going to try and focus on other areas that have move buck movementthis year instead. I'm likely going to put them up so they only take daytime pics with no flash, and I'll definitely have a couple that are setup to catch trespassers specifically instead of deer. ;) |
RE: Trail cam setups?
I have 4 cameras and all 4 are out year round. # 5 is just about finished. . All my cameras are Sony p32
I put them on trails and usually throw a little shelled corn and sweet feed on the trail so I can get different angles and a good look at anything using the trail. I also put them over mineral blocks with feed. When going to a new area I like to throw out shelled corn and creamed corn deer seem to flock to the canned corn and it gives me a quick idea of what is in the area |
RE: Trail cam setups?
I don't have mine out yet. They probably won't go out till August or so. I had 2 no flash cudde's out last year, this year I'll be buying the 2008 no flash cudde so now I'll have 3 out. I usually set the camera's up on very well used trails. Early in the year I'll keep them out of the deeper part of the woods, as time gets closer to the rut I'll move them in deeper and closer to where I think the big guys are running.

RE: Trail cam setups?
I have 4 cameras, 3 35mm and 1 digital. My digital is a moultrie game spy and it works great on mineral licks and feeders but I think it is to slow for trails. As for set ups I have 1 camera on my trophy rock lick, another camera on a fence crossing coming into my alfalfa field where I have also made another mineral lick (whitetail addiction) and my digital is on a spot where I have been feeding some turkeys. I really like setting my cameras on logging roads and scrapes during the pre-rut. There is a tree about 75 yards from my alfalfa field that has a scrape every year and I always get 10-15 bucks using it. Most pictures are after dark but it sure is nice to see what you are hunting. I run my cameras year around with the exception of the 3 weeks of spring turkey season and the 11 daysof rifle season.

RE: Trail cam setups?
Earlier, a few responders mentioned being "down to x amount of camera(s)"... Is that due to theft?

RE: Trail cam setups?
i am going to set out 4 cuddebacks in early season over bait, that leaves 2 behind so if i find a great public scrape or funnel during the rut i can put it there

RE: Trail cam setups?
Right now i only own a moultree 140 and a (wildview [:'(]) I think the wild view went on the brink from last summers sweltering heat, we will see. During the summer months mine are usually out when the beans are comming up. That seems to be the place to get good pics and the bigger bucks dont mind showing themselves this time of year either. I have never tried corn in front of them but will this year. I found some very beat trails just inside of the woods while turkey hunting this season..I think ill start there as soon as i get some fresh batteries. Man i got to get some rechargebles [&o]6 volt's are $ pricy $$$ Im even pondering trying mounting a cam straight above a trail looking down just for something different :DIm eat up, i know

RE: Trail cam setups?
I've got 4 out now. All four are over looking summer food plots. I'll leave mine on food until fall and I will switch them to travel routes.
I use my cameras for inventory only and never put them where I plan to hunt. After 6 years of heavy camera use, I've yet to identify a pattern that would be worthy of hunting. |
RE: Trail cam setups?
I ran 3 cams last year on the old lease, a D40 and 2 Bushnell Trail cams. All over feeders. We found out quickly taht we had a lot more deer (especially bucks) than we had ever seen. I have replaced the Busnnell's with 2 I40's. I have 1 I40 and the D40 just watching some trail crossings right now, but I ordered some 30-06 with protien minerals that should be here next week. So in the next couple of weeks I should have all 3 set up over mineral licks.
