max range
Waht is the max range you would attempt to take a whitetail or any critter for that matter - I think 35-40 yards is max for me - I have take 3 whitetails over 40 yards but everything was in place - little to no wind, calm animal etc

RE: max range
Depends the situation but probably 40 yards max.

RE: max range
50 yards.I practice at this distance quite often.I never have taken a shoot that far but I am confident I can.

25 yards

RE: max range
I'm confident at 40 right now, but I see no reason with some practice I could do 50 or even 60. I just haven't shot 50 or 60 and would just need to shoot it to get sighted in. I don't ever see the need to be shooting 50 or 60 in the woods of Pennsylvania, but I guess it could happen. I guess the only thing I would be worried about is a deer jumping the shot at that range.

RE: max range
I have pins to 60.I would take a shot of that distant only if everything wasperfect.

RE: max range
A suggestion on testing your max range: Take your very first shot of the day at your max range and see if it hits where you want. Likely, your very first shot of the day will be on a deer during hunting season and if, during the offseason, you can consistantly nail your first shot at your max range then you should be comfortable doing that inseason also.
Another thing to do if you are practicing is split your sessions. Have one in the morning and then, in the afternoon practice "deer shots", single shotsout toyour max range where each one must be a kill shot. Our max ranges should be the one that we can consistantly make as our first shot of the day and not the one we can make after practicing with 30-50 shots beforehand. |
RE: max range
40 yards. That is where I practice at, I know I can make that shot.
|
RE: max range
I have no max range.:D
|
RE: max range
Heck i practice back to 70 yards, but as far as shooting a deer my preference would be to shoot 40 and under.. I feel like practicing at 65-70 yards really makes it alot easier to shoot up close.. No if I were on the ground and had a calm deer and no wind I would try a 50 yard shot, but it will likely never happen.

50 yards if everything is perfect

RE: max range
20 yards on most days, sometimes even less. Depends how me and the recurve are getting along!;) There has been a few different years where I was deadly out to 25 yards. 22 yards has been my farthest shot with my recurve, its happened twice and both times I double lunged and heart shot the deer.

RE: max range
40 yards would be maxing out for me. I know I can hit a target at 60 yards, but wouldn't feel comfortable taking a shot at more than 40, unless it is a huge buck that is about to get away.

RE: max range
30yd and under. Preferably 20 and under. I like them up close and personal. I practice further out, but a lot can go wrong on stand, and I don't like the idea of wounding a deer just because I "think" I can hit out to 50-60yds.

RE: max range
That doesn't make much sense and potrays a bad image for hunters - if you aren't 100% confident you have no business releasing an arrow

RE: max range
I have my bow sited in to 50 yards and was out last weekend and had about a 5 inch spread so I am fairly confident I can take one at that distance but everything would have to be perfect
|
RE: max range
Depends on what bow I am shooting
With my Liberty, the bow I shoot the best at long ranges, I dont like to take shots over 40 yardson a broadside standing still whitetail Elk standing stone stillbroadside, no wind...I have no problem with shooting my 50 yard pin. Turkey size critter 20-25 max |
RE: max range
55 yards on a perfect day
|
RE: max range
My max effective range is about 60 yards.

RE: max range
Ive been shooting out to 60yards! Im pretty confident that I can kill a deer at that range if the wind and all was perfect!
|
RE: max range
50 yrds
|
RE: max range
I am only able to practice at 25yrds, I won't shoot at a deer past 30yrds.
|
RE: max range
I guess mine would be about 35 yards. I generally hunt in thick stuff an rarely have to shoot over 20 yards. Mylongest shot ever on adeeris 28 yards.
|
RE: max range
For me, it depends on what bow...
My recurve 25 yrds max My ROSS 337 50yrds My BEAR Instinct50yrds...when its operational These shots are mainly on hogs and bear |
RE: max range
With my current bow I like to take shots out to 30 yards. When I get my new one I might stretch it out a bit though I rarely see a shot opportunity beyond 30 that is safe without obstructions where I hunt.
|
RE: max range
45-50
|
RE: max range
I routinely practice out to 50 yards, and on calm days will shoot at 70 yards, but I like to keep my hunting shots inside of 40. I know that on an average day I can hit what I want at 40 yards, so that is good enough for me. I try to keep it inside that because there are other hunting factors that start to come into play, like animal movement, wind, unusual positions for the shot, etc. These will chip away at accuracy so I take them into account.

RE: max range
ORIGINAL: BobCo19-65 I have no max range.:D My longest kill shot to date was 34 yards. I'll probably NEVER shoot any farther than that or even close, I don't want to. This year I won't be going any farther then 18 yards with the Longbow and maybe, maybe 25 yards with the Compound. The way I look at it, it's bowhunting, I want them in as close as I can get. I hunt in the woods of Michigan and Wisconsin, I'll save my 25, 35 and 45 or even 50 yard shots for the Flintlock! Some guys need to take the long distance shot because of what and where there hunting, my hats off to ya! :) |
