I've been trapping for coons for years, smart is one thing I wouldn't call them. Dumb, overpopulated, aggressive, but not smart. I will say we do have alotof racoons, so maybe its a location thing.
Live trap baited with marshmallowsand a 22 with subsonic loads. Works like a charm.

I too have trapped a lot of raccoons, and given your proximity to your neighbors, I would live trap them with a can of sardines from your local Dollar General store, $0.50 here in PA. If you can hold out until fall, you can get upwards of $15.00 for a large one. Thats about the same amount you would have in an arrow with a varmit head on it.

I wouldn't kill them just to kill then, get some live traps and relocate them! I don't suggest shooting them in the city limits with any type of gun or bow, not to smart if you ask me! You never know what can happen, its better to be safe then stupid!

My neighbor used to trap them. Tie a rope to the trap. Throw full trap into the pond in the morning. Empty trap in the evening into appropriate receptacle and repeat as often as needed.

I just arrowed one that had a decease really bad, probably distemper and a Rage 3 blade dropped it in it's tracks. Most localgovernment agencies will not due a darn thing with them it's up to you to take matters in your own hands with these varmints. A bow is very quiet and if you take out the boiler room it's not running anywhere.

Try spraying your garbage cans with bug spray.I agree with others, don't just kill them.Even if you use a live trap you have to dispose of them. They have critter repelents they sell in stores to keep them out of your garden.I'd rather do that then take a chance with the laws these days.
