How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
In an average bow season, how many "full days" do you get to hunt?
That includes: [ul][*]Weekend Days[*]"Sick" Days[*]Vacation Time[/ul] __________________________________________________ _______ I just looked over my logbook from last year: 9 full days wereavailable until I filled my last tag. That included a lone vacation day that I had left. One wedding, one day scouting, and a day of rain -cut 3open days from my hunting schedule. So while I had 9 to start with, I only spent 6 full days in the tree. PA archery season is only 6 weeks, no sundays - so I normally would've had 6 days to hunt (plus 1 vacation day), but I bought a NR license in Ohio where I could hunt Sundays. That bought me an extra 2 days in the tree. Starting sometime soon, I should be able to save some dedicated vacation time to hunt the rut. That will be clutch. |
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I'd say least 15 days out of the season are all-day hunts. Usually take a week of vacation, at least 2-3 full weekends plus any comp days I accrue during Sept-Nov.

RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I organize my life so I can hunt. My work is arranged so I can get time off to hunt. I took the whole month of Nov and the last week of Oct. off last year.
I have to travel to hunt to I need to get extended times off. No morn or evening getaways for me. |
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I have alot of "whole" days I can hunt, but I won't due to my family. I just got a new job 3 years ago that lets me take off a couple of weeks in November. The last two years I probably hunted about 6-7 full days a year, and that was around the first two weeks of November. Prior to that, I probably hunted 3-4 whole days, the rest of my hunting time was just when I could get a quick 3 hour hunt or so.

RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I just e-mailed a spreadsheet in with my vacation times on it last night... a week for elk (beginning of Sept.) and a week for deer (end of Oct).
Then there'll be another 8-9 days taken here and there depending on weather fronts, temperature, etc. There'll proably be another 20-25 miscellaneous mornings or afternoons (usually afternoons; I'm just not a morning person) that'll get thrown in there, too. There's a reason I started gearing my career several years ago towards outside sales... I've sat in on more than one conferencecall from atree stand. ;)Heck, my final interview with the Regional Sales Vice President with my current company took place from 22 foot up an oak, and I watched forkhorn walk under me less than a minute after we hung up. :D |
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
Usually just Saturdays for me. I hunt the evenings all the time, but I seen alot more buck movement this year in the morning...so I think I will be hunting the mornings a little bit harder this year!:D

RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
King, im in the 31+ on the poll. I work 12 hour days swing shifts, so the most i work in a row are three to four days in a row. I get 8 days off straight every month plus some 1 1/2 to 2 day weekends in between. I have 5 weeks of vacation to work with and i use two-three of them for hunting. Im getting 31+ easily. By the way working swing shifts suck [:'(]
GregH, thats pretty cool having a conference call in a tree :D |
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I'm to the point I'm trying to take about a 1 week trip out west every year, depending which tag I draw or can draw....
this year it should be antelope, last year it was elk, I also hunt deer locally, quite a few long weekends.... maybe one day sooner than later hopefully I'll hunt more than 1 hunt out west in a year..... it surprises me how many guys do like 4 different hunts in a year out west.....course living out there may make some hunts more available. I think 1 or 2 hunts out west a year, for a week a peice, would be awesome, plus some homestyle local deer hunting each season would be ideal/perfect, though to add, depending on the places in north america or the world, you can be hunting from august to january etc.....so it wouldnt be like taking an entire month off of work just to hunt. |
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
Like Greg, I have been able to spend a lot of time hunting, etc because of sales jobs over the years. The only bad thing is that my current job istracked on monthly quota (as compared to quarterly)..........so unless I hit an absolute home run in the first few weeks of the month it's difficult for me to take any time off in the last two weeks of the month and plan for it ahead of time.
I hunt the first two Saturdays in PA, then from the middle of October till the first full week in November I hunt Saturdays in PA and Sundays in NY. Then I traditionally take off work the first full week in November as well for a 9 day trip and split this between PA and NY. That is usually it unless you count a day or two during rifle season, and a 4-5 days of hunting turkeys. |
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
A lot. I take the entire month of Nov. off and hunt weekday nights and weekends the rest of the time.
|
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I have the 26th of October through the second week of November off so I wil have a lot of full days this year. I am thinking I might have wanted to take the first three weeks of November though as it appears to be a late rut this year. I might work 12-9 the last three months though to get more mornings in.

RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I probably get to hunt about 15 full days each year, this includes Saturdays.

RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
Never enough.;)

RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I probaly only end up with about 6 whole days and some half days throughout the season. Last year I hunted about 12-13 days total that's counting 1/2 days(like morning and evening hunts).
I keep a really good written log and last year I started one here in the South forum just to track the weather and dates I was seeing deer and other stuff like how many time I hunted. I figured it may help me schedule a couple days off this season. Not a very exciting read(I randomly babble a lot)but here it is: My Field Journal (VA & NC) |
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
On average I get the 6 saturdays of our lovely bow season, plus 5 more vacation days, sometimes as many as 10. So theoretically 11-16 full days.
HOWEVER. Up until only a few years ago, I never made more than 1-2 all day sits a season despite having full days off. This year between vacation, work schedule & hunting a normal state that allows sunday hunting I think I will get somewhere around 22-24 FULL days. How many of them will I actually hunt all day, probably only those druing the last week of october andthe few weeks intonovember. |
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
On average here I can hunt whenever I want because I work shifts and mostly get week days off though I could get up to 5 weeks tohunt deer in the states, we mostly all get 5+ weeks paid vacation here so I like to make the most of it :)
This year it'll be 2 weeks bowhunting in MS and the rest of my vacation time is for the villa in Tenerife during Xmas and New year or else i would have blown them all on my hunting vacation. |
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
Count me in for 31+, my season is almost 4 months long.

RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
From August 15th to Dec 31st with all of my vacation time being a school teacher, I dont start school till Sept 4, and have big breaks over Thanksgiving and Christmas) I just counted it up ... roughly 45 whole days. ;)
|
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
not sure how it works out in whole days vs half days, but I usually spend about 100hrs a year hunting...
Probably 10 saturdays and another 10-15 workday afternoons... Some years I may take a week off and go to the midwest... Either way it always seems like I end up at 100 hrs give or take 20hrs. |
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I dont want to count really. First weekend of September till Mid to late January....cam hunt any day I feel like spending the gas to get there.;)
|
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
Virtually all of the "whole" days I hunted were on the weekend and holidays. I hunted nearly every weekend from September to January. But I spent a lot of 1/2 days in the field on the weekdays.

RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
A couple of weeks for Turkeys in the spring.
A week in NE in Oct chasing Mule Deer 2 1/2 weeks in IL. chasing Whitetails during the rut Another week in Dec Mule Deer hunting NE. again As well as a day here and there thrown in hunting Whitetails in IL. I wish I had more time but that's about all I can squeeze out.;) Dan |
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?

RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I spend 4 weeks at the cabin each year just hunting! I do hunt A LOT of morning/evening hunts as well, 2 - 3 times a week 45 minutes from my house. Wisconsin season is from Mid Sept - 1st week of Jan just for deer, then comes Coyotes/Fox. Spring Turkey for 5 days. I work mostly split shifts so if I want to hunt I hunt! My life is centered around my son then hunting, I love it!:)

RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I arrange my schedules and vacation around hunting season. Every year I usually have the last week in oct. and definitely all of nov. off from work. I can hunt all day if I want almost evryday when it counts.
|
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
I mainly hunt hogs & bear, and some deer....but way more than 31 days a year
|
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
"Whole" days don't exist for me, period. I workdays and my wife works nights, so there's never a"whole" day that I'm neither working, taking care of the kids in the evening, or like most days, both. I do, however, hunt nearly every day of the archery season during first light for anwhere from20 minutes to an hour and a half before work. There are afew Saturday mornings and weekdays that I can hunt longer after work. I usually won't take vacation time to hunt, at least in my home state, as that would take away from family trips.
|
RE: How many "whole days" do you get to hunt?
Well over 60 days a year. I am hunting april, may, june, august, september, october, november, december. I get 6.5 weeks a year vacation and all weekends....
