BHB DOWNS ANOTHER!!!!
Well heres my second turkey for this season and my 5th turkey with a bow!
I was walking an old power line road and didnt hear a single gobble and I decided to take a walk up an old dilapidated road that I had seen good sign on. Not long after I decided to go up there I just 2 jackrabbits and thought well i guess even if i dont see any turkey it was cool to see those and it was a beautiful day here anyway. So a little farther down the trail I can hear spitting and drumming......I had no idea how far away but i had to get around the next corner to find out. I saw somewhere between 5 and ten birds and this strutter just really stood out to me and I could easily tell he was the dominant one. I took my time and snuck up with in 75 yards of these guys and realized that they werent alarmed becuase there was a lot of brush and trees between us. I pretty much crawled the last 20 yards and decided it was either now or never and I just had to try. I drew back and stepped to the side of a tree to get a view of the turkeys. I could see 2 hens and 2 jakes but i could still hear spitting and drumming so i knew these werent the strutter. The turkeys still hadnt noticed me and I took one more step which allowed me to see a beautiful bird showing off for his hens. I didnt have a rangefinder and did the best i could at guessing the range at 55 yards,at this rangei really didnt expect to hit him. So i put the 50 right over where the wingbone connects to the body and let er fly. I never thought this would happen but i somehow drilled him right in the wingbone and to my surpise dropped in his tracks!!! It was an absolutely priceless hunt! 5 1/2" Beard 1/2" spurs 20 pounds ![]() |

RE: BHB DOWNS ANOTHER!!!!
BHB, Congrats on the Bird and the quick kill.
IMHO a Bowhunter should never release an arrow at game unless he is confident of a quick clean kill. Your story sounds quite the contrary. Hail mary shots have no place in a Bowhunter's arsenal. A Turkey's vitals are a small target at close range much less at 50+ yards. I think you are a better bowhunter than that. I enjoy the kill as much as anyone but there are times when the %'s should tell us not to shoot. I hope you don't take this the wrong way. Nothing I like better than to encourage a young hunter, but there are also lessons to be learned. Hopefully you will think long and hard before you take another shot at this distance on a Turkey or any Game. There are times when longer shots can be made, but it is a learning process to know when itis right and when itis wrong. I never send an arrow on the way thinking "I'll probably miss anyway" Dan |
RE: BHB DOWNS ANOTHER!!!!
Major congrats, that is a heck of a shot & kill. Just remember the difference between luck and skill is knowing when to stop. Next time....you might want to stop.;)

ORIGINAL: Bullet Hole Bailey MeanV2 i was thinkina bunch today and I really want to thank you for the words of wisdom! Maturing as a Hunter takes time and sometimes Hard lessons. I still learn something every season. Congrats Again on a nice bird, quite an accomplishment:D Dan |
RE: BHB DOWNS ANOTHER!!!!
Thanks Again MeanV!
i really appreciate it! |
RE: BHB DOWNS ANOTHER!!!!
BHB, first I'd like to applaud you for taking Dan's comments constructively; that takes a LOT of maturity to do that, and there are some good points in his words of wisdom to be mulled over.
Secondly, congratulations! That's a beautiful bird -- and those pictures are simply OUTSTANDING!! (Of course, I think that camo makes any pic look better ;)) |
RE: BHB DOWNS ANOTHER!!!!
