Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
Im in the woods before daylight, set up on a few birds roosting. It just got light enough and I called a tom into within 75 yards. This frickin dog comes chasing a deer right through my decoys...no more tom!
It is the end of April, Im hunting 300 acres of private land, and there are dogs running deer! Im furious, this isnt the only time I have seen this hound, but others will appear all through the night and day. Come on guys! Have some respect for the others surrounding you..and dont just let your hounds go without a purpose! I have created a sanctuary, so I thought, with food plots, etc. What would you do? ![]() |

I dont see a collar[8D]
|
RE: Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
I havent noticed any collars on any of them. They are either leftovers from last season or the dog has escaped a pen somewhere. The warden suggested I try and catch them and call the pound. I have also distributed a dozen printed pictures of the various dogs and put them in mailboxes explaining that the dog could be injured in a beaver trap, or worst of all be in the line of fire on a bird!
This dang dog had to have traveled a couple miles to get to where he is. |
RE: Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
If its your private land, this dog has ruined a hunt or someting more than once, and no one has claimed it i would have to say either shoot it or do as the warden says and trap it and call the pound.

RE: Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
If you do shoot it,don't post it,that would be a hundred page thread.[8D]

I had a dog chasing deer on some property I hunted years ago. Lets just say I broke him of that habit.

RE: Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
The dog doesn't appear to be feral but if theres other dogs out there and the dog does appear to be walking a used road so maybe the dog is just walking back home or back to the owner. I have shot mangey looking ferals before and the one in this picture doesn't possees any charactertics in a feral dog. Its not the dogs fault but the owners in letting it run loose but I wouldn't shoot someones pet either. Have you tried animal control?

I have a dog, and would hate for anything to happen to him. Someone said it best...its the owners fault. That road he is walking on is about 60 yrds long connecting two fields...so I doubt that he was following it home. |
RE: Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
I'm thinkin full body mount.

RE: Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
That mutt looks dumb enough to be trapped!:DI would try to do just that, and thentake him FAR away and let him go.

If your IQ is over the out side temperature you would see that that dog is well fed & in good shape it is no stray. Buy the lack of fangs I don't think you need to fear for your life.[:o]Why don't you just call him over to you and find his owner or a new home.

RE: Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
Looks like a nice dog, try catching him, and taking him home for the kids. WALA! No more dod wrecking your hunts, and a free pet for the family.:D

RE: Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
That is tough man. No need to kill the dog but i bet you can get him to come if you give it a try

RE: Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
Well, you could either shoot him or turn him over to PETA or a HSUS shelter, same result...

If ya dont know whos it is I'd be takin him to the pound. If ya do notify them and explain that their dog is not going to be runnin on my property anymore if I see him on it again. Those are about the only solutions when it comes to strays/running pets, exspecially ones that chase deer and such. WCL

You better hope you don't get caught killing a domesticated animal, you might not need that crossbow for a few years! I've never been able to figure out why one would you post about killing a dog in a public hunting forum giving all hunters a black eye??? We have enough issues to deal with instead of useless threads like this.... Whats the actual point of this thread?[:'(] |
RE: Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
As a dog owner I couldnt see myself hurting the dog. As a matter of fact, I believe you did not get the point of the post. This dog has ruined more than one good turkey hunt, on my private, posted land.
When I mentioned my crossbow I was planning on putting an apple on his head and scaring the crap out of him...not shooting him! ![]() I have tried to catch this dog numerous times but by the time I get my blind unzipped he is long gone. I passed out a dozen flyers to homeowners in the area with his picture. I mentioned abandoned traps, my buddy that is near sighted, and the broken safety on his shotgun. Hopefully the owner will take responsibility. As I said, I contacted the warden to find out my options. It looks like I need to trap it. I doubt the dog catcher is going to chase this mutt through 900 acres. The point of the thread was to stress the importance of respecting others property. I put the words pet peeve in there for a reason. Dont you know where your dog(s) are? I know where mine is and its not a couple miles away chasing rabbits in the middle of someones turkey hunt! |
RE: Speaking of pet peeves...no pun intended
Well Jeff, it looks like you are doing the responsible thing. Its just to bad others don't see it this way. The dog is doing what it does, its looks to be a hunting dog. The owners are at fault on this one!

I'd give up a turkey or two for a good rabbit dog. |
