Finally found a shed..

Saturday morning I was putting new brakes on the wife-to-be's Jeep and while I was waiting for the parts store to return the rotors I figured I'd go for a quick walk to a small patch of woods behind my dad's work. This is a small, small patch of woods (1 acre at best) with a few fencerows leading in and out of it that we used to hunt quite a bit back in the day but doesn't see much deer traffic anymore mostly due to a change in the way the farmers harvest the fields for silage early in the year. To be honest, I wouldn't have even walked it at all had I not had anything else to do at the time. Over the past 20 years or so of having access to this piece we've only found 1 shed there ever, and even that was probably 10-12 years ago.

Low and behold I found this nice 5 point side from last year laying in the middle of the woods. So after 40-50 hours of walking some of our best spots and not finding a single shed I walk into the last place you'd think to look and find one. Go figure. Oh, and to top it all off this is the same buck that Mike (dukemichaels) found the matched set to this year almost 1.5 miles away. And without putting a tape to the two antlers I'd say they're within 4-5 total inches of each other. Proving our theory that this buck is fully mature but probably isn't going to put on any more inches.

Duke's matched set off the same buck from this year. He's maxed out at about 140-145".

I envy you guys and your shed hunting... Even when you're putting in a lot of time and not finding anything - there's at least a chance of finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

I found another one on Saturday morning, hobbling out to set up on a gobbler(in the dark, no less). It would maybe measure out to 20" on a good day.[>:]

In 3 years now, I've found about 15 sheds - and the whole pile would fit in a shoebox.Seriously.

Here's a picture of my shed pile before adding this year's "monsters."

I find more dink sheds than anybody I've ever known. I'm like the dink magnet. Better than nothin', I guess...

Good find

If that shed is from 2 years ago then it's still in good shape it should be bleached out some after that long or maybe you have 2 different bucks.

very nice find!!

im with oakcreek...COULD be old...but all the old ones ive seen are at the very least weathered and usually bleached...even greenish growing on them..and/or chewed and gnawed by critters...could just be the pic making it look better than it really looks...or could been well protected from the sun and weather...

good find none the less...

awesome find, nothing better than finding them where you really don't expect to, but you have to look anyways....

sort of the 'you cant shoot a deer if you aint in the woods'

If I found that shed around where I hunt, the coloration on it says definately this years drop, shoot, I saw a couple bucks running around at the end of march with bone on thier heads, and they were bleached on top of the bucks head......

Those are the best little spots if there ripe for the picken. During heavy pressure deer love those little pockets.

Trust me, it's from last year. The backs of the tines are good and chewed up, the base is chewed, and it's been there for awhile. The woods it was in is pretty thick and doesn't get much if any sunlight so it's not too bleached out. And it's definitely from the same buck, that's not even a question. We held them side by side and there is no doubt. I'm sure we'll get some better photos when we get a chance. That one above is from my phone so it's not the greatest.

Now I'm just hoping we can get some trail cam photos of him and hopefully shoot him this fall. :D
