Well first let me congratulate my buddy Frank (Kidd642) on his first ever arrowed longbeard! and of course like anything frank shoots he made sure to shoot it multiple times to get his money's worth. ;)

Most of you have seen Frank's monster non-typical freak of a buck from PA.........well his gobbler from this morning came from the same area and apparently the 2 fed under the same power lines. :D

You guys have heard of a "melanistic" or "Black" buck where there is an overabundance of pigment creating a very dark animal?........well this gobbler I THINK has that as well. I say I think because I have never seen anything like this bird.
It's short with a squat build (Imagine that;)) has a stunted looking tail fan and short wings, and of course you can see in the pics that it has an amazing overall BLACK coloration. There is no irridesence to the body feathers except for one or 2 oddballs that are normal Eastern Turkey breast feathers.
It has a black beak and there is no barring at all in the tail feathers or flight feathers (primaries and secondaries) and these flight feathers seem thin in profile. I'm not even sure this thing could fly? It's built like a giant Grouse. [:-]
Oddly enough his head and waddles etc look normal?

In spite of the weird coloration and build it sports a 9" beard and weighs just shy of 22lbs. (weighed on frank's digital scale) with 1" rounded spurs.

Crazy looking bird and unfortunately Frank shot off every feather on the thing so a full mount isn't going to work. :(

Congratulations!! Any turkey with a bow is awesome, but this sounds super-cool... what an accomplishment; I can't wait to hear how it all went down!

i know the feeling about wishing you could have a bird mounted and not being able too...always wanted a turkey mounted...said a double bearder or a true giant would be the one...last year i shot a double bearder...but jerked the trigger and left him all but naked...

i cant get over that bird!! never seen anything like that!!

whats up with the beak?? am i seeing stuff or is there 3 pieces to it?? just dont look right??

It was funny, I was at Rob's house in from the morning hunt with Frank on the phone describing the bird.
BY the description, Rob and I were convinced Frank shot a Turkey Vulture.;)......I don't think we were far off?

This was the first Turkey (in PA) That I was able to call in of the roost and come in "just like the videos" He gobbled his brains out...all the way in up the field edge[8D]:). he came a long way. AT first I thought it was two birds and it still may have been All I know is that when he came in he was the one I concentrated on. I hate to admit it , escpecially with all the 3D I shoot but I missed him on the first shot about 25 yards out[:@]. Right underhim. I was like "damn"[:@] then I regrouped. I could literally feel my pulse in my ears. He never really stopped on any of the shots. AFter nocking the second arrow he gobble again the I came to full draw and "whammo" that is right, I said "whammo" It sounded like I shot a watermelon (thawhawp) is that a word[&:]?

Anyway he putted did a circle I knocked another arrow thinking it was way lower than I wanted. I called like a mad man with my mouth call he then laid down for a second in front of the decoy like he was going down....then he did a circle again and started heading down where he came from and I hit him again on the move. I do not even really remeber everything it seemed like forever until the flurry of arrows went then it seemed like a split second. but wait it is not over.

After he ran down thru the field I then collected myself and got out of the blind and started after him. I spotted him at the field edge about 100 yards away. I approched him very slow not knowing if he was down for good or not. As I got to him he was like nested down in the tall grass with his mouth hanging open. not real sure if I should grab him or what?? so I made the executive decision to grab a big stick and treathis head like a Titliest. After that he flopped into the briars and I broke about every freaking wing feather on him getting him out of there[:'(]. What a morning to say the least. I was jacked. I think I called matt like a dozen times but he was hunting and finally got a hold of him after noon. Then it was photo time[8D];)

That is priceless Frank. I just told my girlfriend that line and she had to remind me that it looked like I "curb stomped" my birds head yesterday morning :D

The thing that stands out to me the most is the tiny wings. Really questioin if it could fly much at all. Must have to survive predators. Congrats to your buddy on an unusual kill.

Frank, congrats on the strange bird. I'm sure a taxi could fix some of the missing and broken feathers, but he'd never be able to find some to match those that were lost. LOL

That is a very unique bird. Way to go.
