New Mexico was a bust.

I walked all Friday afternoon, all day Saturday, and 1/2 a day Sunday. I didn't hear or or see a turkey. I saw 2 cow elk, countless mule deer , and 1 black bear. But I never saw a turkey.
THEN, when I finished packing the car on Sunday night, I hit the remote to set the car alarm. Well, when the car horn beeped indicating that the alarm was set....I get a shock gobble from 2 roosted birds about 50 yds from the condo. My mother in law almost died at that time. She found it very funny that I looked for birds all weekend and now, when we're ready to go home here they are. It took all of my self control to not throttle her on the spot. I guess mothers in law get thier reputations for a reason.
So, although I didn't have much luck with turkeys, I had an enjoyable time. Seeing the animals I saw, that I don't have in my home woods, and seeing the beauty of the mountains surrounding Ruidoso, made it a trip worth taking.
The trip was a great family vacation. Carie and Lily and a great time shopping and seeing the sights. Carie also won a few hundred $$ at the nearby casino.
So, all in all with the exception of having the old battleaxe,( mother-in law), with us on the trip it was good times for me and mine.
i'll be back after Rios in texas the next couple of weekends.

Yeah I do and I dont think a turkey is worth the time or effort not to mention the costs involved.

Ignore the little feller Greg. He's not even allowed in Wally World!Bet down town Riodosa was great,I love going into the art galleries,Fentons has great stuff upstairs.I use to go out to the reservation and shoot skeet when I would go up.The casino shafted that for more parking!Go back in September and get a bear tag and you can hunt everywhere between there and Cloudcroft and camp in a public campground...dumpsters are bear proof so hunting near them would be good they try to get in them anyway!

I think we all owe Murphy from one time or another, right Rob?;) All in all it sounds like you got to see some beautiful sights and had a good time even with your MIL in tow.

Aussie, you buy your turkeys at Wal Mart? I didn't even know they sold turkeys.

Greg.

Pork is a different story you get plenty of meat from a pig, I have shot turkeys but they was silly enough to come along while I was hunting something else:)

But have I gone out and just targeted turkeys no I haven't and probably never will, I dont see how guys can get so worked up over a beard and spurs ( well I can see why Rowell does )[8D];):D

Watch it Russ...the old man will return soon enough and take care of my lite work!:D Myself I have never been after turkey per say, they're a bonus to deer I guess. But hey if it's a chance to get out and escape and have a hunt I can see where it would be worth it.I have learned not to harvest one and return to camp and start celebrating with a beer and then decide to dress it...maybe it's ours down here but geez they are ripe smelling!

Then why does every onego gagawhen talking about how long the beard and spurs are.

Rough quote:

"I had a gobbler come in oh my god you should have seen the double 29" beard and 13" spurs. I was shaking so much I could not draw my bow back."

Sorry to upset the turkey guys but if I want a turkey I'm heading to Walmart, heck I dont even eat turkey:)

RE: New Mexico was a bust.

After a long time away from this site I only have one thing to say...guys let Ausie be...we don't need any more turkey hunters in the woods its crowded enough;)

txjourneyman, i just got back from a close by area sunday...we had decent success, but it is a different type of bird than the easterns.... and it was very crowded where I hunted...I had a local setup between me and a bird one day, and another hunterbump a bird while I was hunting it.... I will hunt these birds again (have to get one for the slam)....but the learning curve on how to hunt themwas steep....
