RE: Hunting Injuries

Well maybe I have just had bad luck, or maybe I have just spent a lot of time in the woods. But I had a form of a Heart Attack last fall that required being lifeflighted. I have been in two car accidents on my way too or from hunting. Fourteen years ago I cracked my knee cap, then proceeded to killabull elk later that day4 miles from the trail head. Mydad was pissed because I couldn't walk let alone hike or help pack any of my elk out the next day. lol I have had to have stiches the night before the opening of bow season because I cut my self with a broadhead. And last of all I had a bungie strap break on my fourwheeler and come back and smack in right in the head. I should of had stiches but I didn't want toleave to recieve medical help. Some super glue (Goat Tuf, stung like hell for the first 5 minutes) and a band aid ended up dong a good job. lol I could keep going but I think I will end there becasue I covered all the major stuff. I haven't been hurt by my horses yet, but that is my biggest worry on a back country hunt. I hope it never happens, and I am very alert, cautious and carefull around them, but I know that accidents happens, so that is why its my biggest worry if I were to think about it.

No physical injuries while in the field.Emotional ones is another story! While hunting a couple of years Ago I was walking in the dark from the cabin to the skinning shed and tripped on a wood pile fell and cracked a rib.
Another verification that practically all accidents are preventable, who needsa flash light my eyes will adjust.:D

RE: Hunting Injuries

Rolled a truck and messed up my back, minor cuts and abrasions ,7 mile walk out.

Rolled a canoe in the middle of one of the most dangerous rivers in Idaho. Almost drown and lost half my gear. I was a long way from our portage point and became hypothermic.

Went elk hunting right after kidney surgery, Somehow while packing a bull out, I jammed the stint I had in me through the wall of my bladder, that led to 3 days in the hospital and I was pi$$ed because the bulls were in full rut. As soon as they let me out, I was back into the hunt... I had to pull the catheter out to keep it from rubbing my leg though, that scored big points with the Doc!!!!

I ended up with Giardia one year, miles from the trailhead. That put me in the hospital too with IV bags hooked to me.2 days after that I headed back in with a 12 pack of Charmin strapped to my back...

You should see the look on everyones face when one of the crew (not me this time) rams a blade 3 inches into his leg miles from no where. One of the group took up sewing on that trip...

2 years ago I escaped with everything but my pride when I thought that I could blow through a snow drift in the canyon that I bear hunt in. Needless to say, my truck was on the edge of rolling down a mile long hill into a deep canyon. I walked 9 miles this trip to use a phone and call a tow truck. The truck met me in the middle of nowhere and charged me 250.00 to get my truck headed in the right direction. I got home at 3:30 the next morning....

Last year I ate the skin and meat off both heels. The last day of the antelope hunt I ended up walking through the desert in my bedroom slippers.

3 years agoI ruptured a disk while elk hunting. Hydrocodone was my friend for the rest of the season and helped me harvest a 5 point...

Some days you eat the bear, and some days the bear eats you!!!!

Darn!! I bet that hurt![:@]

I was blasted with a Shotgun once, birdshot. It was very cold and I had lots of clothes on thank goodness. I was still pickin shot out for a while.

They just didn't get real deep. It's amazing how they seem to stick to the flesh.

It already had. It hit a tree branch and was tumbling.......20 yard sound shot.

Like I said, I'll tell the whole story someday and post some pics of the scars.

I've had a few situations where I should have been injured but got seriously lucky.

I had a climbing stand lose purchase and I slid about 8 feet down a tree, and dislocated a finger in the process (and that hurts brother). This past fall also, I went running out of a dove field to get my girlfriend another box of shells from the car (I'd already limited out) and somehow stepped on a piece of uneven ground and rolled my ankle REAL bad. If it wasn't for having 1000 sprained ankles and having very little ligament left to tear in my ankles from playing soccer for most of my life I suspect I would have been on crutches... but I walked it off.... though it was swollen nicely and 8 shades of purple, blue and green!

I bailed out of a 15ft climbing stand with no parachute, just hurt my pride more than anything. I had set up over a yellow jackets hole in the tree, and when it warmed up in the morning they came out "in force", apparantly not liking me there. Had a heck of a time getting the stand back down.

I've been pretty fortunate, except for one dumb incident. When I was in gradeschool, and didn't know any better,I tried taking a broadhead off my arrow without a wrench. I sliced 2 of my fingers really deep. Now I "ALWAYS"use a wrench.

I was running down a crippledgobbler one time and put my right ankle in a groundhog hole. It didn't break, but I think just about every ligament and tendon was damaged. No surgery, but it's still a mess, 10 years later. I had to crawl out through the field to recover the bird, then crawl back to the car. I got stung by a bee while I was crawling, which added insult to injury.

Another time, I was guiding a guy and he emptied his gun on a big tom. It was gonna get away if I didn't do something, so I ran it down like a leopard and gave it a Bill Goldberg Human Spear. Feathers went everywhere and I came out of the ordeal with a dead turkey and a separated shoulder. Ouch.

If my mother would've been around on either of those occasions, I'd still be eating soap.
I really like that bee:D To bad he had to die:(

Germ - I'm about to put popknots all over your head, whitey. Is it considered a "hunting injury" if you're provoked by a fellow hunting message board member, prompting you to put on your best wrestling leotard anddrive to Michigan andsuplex"someone"inakiddie pool filled with vaseline and Apple Jacks?

Just keep it up, Hemry. I've got a full tank of gas anda pink spandexsinglet that says you won't last 5 seconds in the ring with the King.

I have a cousin who got royally stoned in his deer stand. he fell out but landed upright with his feet planted on each side of a log. They then rolled in opposite directions and it sprained both ankles. He spent the next several weeks on crutches.

looked up to my stand and got a chance fleck of something in my eye that scratched my cornea a bit, more annoying than anything, but somewhat painful and needed some kind of drops for a few days.

I'm stupid enough to have tried to scratch my back with an arrow. Yes it had a BH on it. Yes it hurt and bled profusely. It was an absent minded thing. I've done it with FPs on and just didn't stop and think. Sometimes I'm just not real bright.

Did this on October 23, 2004. Broke it in 3 places falling down a hill. My xTec made it unharmed bouncing off a rock. I had 18 of the next 23 days off of work and spent them sitting on my butt with my foot in the air.

RE: Hunting Injuries

So I took down a ladder stand for a hunting buddy to move it. Not being familiar with ladder stands and not thinking I untied the middle support bar from the tree then climbed up and unhooked the top of the stand. Made it down two steps or so and started going backwards and bailed out and twisted my knee and hurt my ankle.
Two weeks later I was going up a tree that had a branch to supplement a tree peg and it broke, leg slipped down and ankle cracked on tree peg, that was three years ago and still jacked up.
few cuts from broadheads over the years and sliced my hand while dressing a deer once.
