Open Range Elk /OR/ 20,000 acre ranch?
Ok guys...I'm not in this to spark up an argument on fenced in hunts....I want you to give me your opinion choice.
Which would you do? This is not a DIY hunt.....these are guided hunts... 1) A 380 - 400 class bull elk (Guarantee Hunt?)...On a 20,000 acrefenced in ranch.. 6000 dollars. 2) A guided Elk hunt for $4250 with a reputable outfitter. Check outwww.utahelkhunt.com I'm not afraid to say...I like what I see...and know a guy that hunted with them...MONSTERS. |

A ranch is much different than a high fenced place. The animals can still move to wherever they want.
I love public hunts though... it's what I know. |
RE: Open Range Elk /OR/ 20,000 acre ranch?
I would go with the free range just because thats what I like to do.

I wouldn't pick eithor. I'm a DIY guy. I would get much more satisfaction taking a smaller animal on a DIY hunt.

Neither but I was taken on a guided Elk hunt on public and private land near Craig Colorado four years ago. I am not sure what the ex-father-in-law paid but the experience was not what I expected. I did get a 5x4 bull but the guide pressured me to take it and didn't want to hunt for a larger Bull because he was worried about getting his other clients tags filled.

Sorry dude,
I won't spend more than the cost of a resident elk tag-ever. You are more than welcome to join us in September.A OTC non-resident tag is somewhere around $500. I can guarantee you a great time and tons of fun. |

Open range is the way to go. I am booking a drop camp hunt in CO. in 2009. It is the best of both worlds, I have to find the Elk on my own, buy I am set up and droped off but they outfitter.

Where do you see $6000.00 for a 400 class? I see $5900.00 for up to 340 class than add $2000.00 to that for bigger. Go open range Elk Do a true wilderness hunt and get the full experiance.

A Ranch is not a high fenced pen for Ek... Not interested in this hunt.... prefer DIY, and since I live in the West, and grew up doing this stuff, could not imagine any other way to hunt Elk....They are too majestic to put in a fence!!! |
RE: Open Range Elk /OR/ 20,000 acre ranch?
Take the DIY hunt something about the word Guarantee that would totally wreak it for me!! Hunting should not be a guarantee!!!

Either way you go, I hope you have a blast! |

RE: Open Range Elk /OR/ 20,000 acre ranch?
I think a canned hunt if youre 75yo and have yet to take that monster elk is one thing.....
and also 20,000 acres out west, isn't 20,000 acres out east......and you may run into a fence.... IMO I want to shoot a 400" on open range, not canned/fenced. a 330" uncanned IMO is bigger than a 380-410 canned. Course its your money, is it not fenced? just a ranch? private land? if that's the case, do whichever. |
RE: Open Range Elk /OR/ 20,000 acre ranch?
Open range with a reputable guide.
|
RE: Open Range Elk /OR/ 20,000 acre ranch?
I think if you really have a reputable guide whose only concern is getting you face to face with a shooter, then that is the route I would go.I think I would get much more satisfaction from that type of hunt than one with a garantee,it just seems to me that would be like buying an elk to shoot, but that's just me.
|
RE: Open Range Elk /OR/ 20,000 acre ranch?
Gauranteed = Not Hunting!
Fenced = Not for me! |
RE: Open Range Elk /OR/ 20,000 acre ranch?
I wouldn't pay that kind of money to shoot any animal, free range, guided, canned or anything. I'd rather bunny hunt for 14 dollars than spend $6000 plus to kill an elk. That's a couple new freezers and whole lot of beef;).
My opinion anyway. Paul |
RE: Open Range Elk /OR/ 20,000 acre ranch?
I'm fortunate enough to live in elk country, and may one day have my DYI oppertunity to shoot a 300+ bull. That will be good enough for me until I win the lottery. Then I'll go buy that 20,000 acres and have all the rich guys pay me to hunt onit :D
