What Animals?
What animals would you not shoot with your bow? I was watching Bowhunting TV and they were hunting stingrays. That is one animal that I would not shoot if given the chance. There are also others that I have seen on TV that I would not hunt either. But I can not think of right now.

RE: What Animals?
I wouldn't shoot a zebra, monkey, elephant, or rhino. Just MHO.
|
RE: What Animals?
Most african game. Alligators, crocs to name a few. I probably will hunt for bears until I take one, and that will be all for me as well.

RE: What Animals?
It would be hard for me to kill a zebra, and maybe a wolf. I'm not sure.
A friend just got back from Africa, and said a zebra is JUST like a horse, even down to the smell. I don't like horses, but I don't think I'd shoot one. My g/f's last name is wolfe[8D]And my school mascot is a huskie (and wolves look like them) Seems like a no-no. :D |
RE: What Animals?
I wouldnt shoot a cow..
|
RE: What Animals?
I'm driving all the way to the East Coast just for the chance to shoot stingrays. Don't worry CNYhunter, I'll try to shoot your share of them for you. ;)
Rhinos don't hold much appeal forme, nor do hippos or walruses. |
RE: What Animals?
Call me cold, but I'd probably shoot anything if it tasted good enough. :D
I think that stingray thing would be fun. Heard they are good eating too. I wouldn't just kill anything pointless. About the only line I draw at shooting critters with a bow is if they are big, tough, & can eat me. Then I'll use a gun:D |
RE: What Animals?
I was gonna say stuffed animals but I have shot them.
|
RE: What Animals?
There are many, but it starts with eating. If I ain't eating I ain't shooting it. Unless, it's a varmit or an animal that is overpopulated and could be dangerous to the eco system. groundhog, yote, bobcat maybe. No lions, elephants, or any African animal, just don't see the point. I can see bear, deer, caribou, elk, any North American big game, I just don't see why anyone would shoot a zebra or an elephant unless they were natives and depended upon it like Plains Indians used to depend on the buffalo.
|
RE: What Animals?
Stingrays are a great target. Many places down south consider them like carp and have bounties on em for removing them. Bowfishing in its self is an excellent sport. I think I'd shoot just about anythign thats legal to tell the honest truth. If it is legally huntable someone or something is always benefiting from it not just the hunter who takes the animal. Many people say they dont like african hunts when in reality african hunts are great for africa and benefit it in more ways than it does if no one but natives hunted it. Poaching is huge there and lagal hunts there provide protection to those animals cuz now it makes the animals worth something to all the people there through funds and feeding hungry people there. Everyone has there opinion though adn thats why we all hunt diff thigns for diff reasons and thats what makes the sport so great. WCL

RE: What Animals?
I could only really kill something if I inteneded to consume it. I just can't kill to kill.. if you eat it.. I have no problem with what you kill.
Yes.. I've taken a few yotes in my day. And no I have not eaten them. But their numbers have more than multiplied by 10.. over the past few years.. and they are staring to hurt my whitetail.. so I've put a personal cap of 3 yotes year in and year out for myself. Last season alone I saw more than 40 of them... |
RE: What Animals?
Zebra and Giraffe. I've had the chance to shoot both, but had zero interest even if it was free...
|
RE: What Animals?
I also would not shoot African animals. I did not realize that stingrays were that much of a problem. Knowing that they are a problem, I would be willing to give it a shot.
|
RE: What Animals?
I'm really suprised so many guys won't shoot an african animal. I wonder if guys in africa, are saying how they could never shoot a deer or an elk???? [&:]
|
RE: What Animals?
Iwould have loved to kill a Mt. Lion as I think they are great looking animals.Though I could & can afford to hunt them I have not done it as I feel it would be just to kill one. I have been blessed with 52 years of great Bowhunts & memories & many a grilled wild game steak or meal.
I can only think of one animal I would shoot, just to kill. A coyote. |
RE: What Animals?
Wouldn't shoot any african game, or those exotic sheep.
|
RE: What Animals?
my taste buds are just not excited about elephant meat...
|
RE: What Animals?
only shoot what I can eat.
|
RE: What Animals?
I have consumed both African Lion and Colorado Mt. Lion (it's the law). I have had the pleasure of dining on Elephant, Eland, Zebra, Croc, Alligator, Buffalo, Bighorned sheep, Mt. Goat...and the list goes on. At one point in my hunting career, I sort of felt there was no need to hunt African. you know, with all the game we have on North America...
Now, not only will I hunt N.A., I will make tremendous efforts to hunt Africa every other year until I die! I will try elsewhere on the off years (Asia for example). I am one who tends to think the world isn't flat- call it the Viking in me! You know, it's funny. I listen to you guys and I'm totally stumped. Why are ya'll so set in your ways?I mean, what is wrong with exploring beyond your own backyard? Are you afraid the boogie man is going to get you? Where's the Lewis andClark in you? I am sure, if given the chance, Daniel Boone would have swallowed a hippo. God knowshe ate plenty of beaver! Zebra was one of the best meats I've consumed! I ate a skewered capybara (a gaint rodent) from the barbeque. Again, one of the best meats I have ever eaten! Heck, I'd even eat coyote if I were hungry enough. Ok, now I want ya'll to cup your two hands in front of your body. Image how much meat would fit into those two cupped hands. Now, I want you to image how many people that amount of meat would feed in a month's time. Yep, in Africa, that amount of meat feeds a family for an entire month. I guess that's why I go to Africa to hunt. Many people benefit from my efforts...just because you don't eat it, it doesn't mean it goes to waste! It takes a tremendous amount of effort to be a conservationist. The lion I killed and ate in Africa was a nine year old rogue female. For the previous three years, that particularlioness was going about killing every other lioness' cubs. Theconservation officers were delighted I killed her!The meat from the carcass was consumed, the money I spent pays for anti-poaching patrols, and more cubs will see tomorrow...win, win, win! There is a time and a place for everything. I wish I had a dollar for everytime I've been told "you will never"! Keep an open mind, have fun, step out...enjoy your life! If there's a reason to kill it, or it needs to be killed...... well, Iamyourhuckleberry! |

RE: What Animals?
I hear what you are saying Doug. Heck, Africa seven years ago wasn't my cup of tea either. Since then I've been three times and will be there for a fourth trip this June. Not unlike hunting white-tailed deer here at home, Africa gets under your skin and into your blood! It's fun, it's exciting, but it costs money and takes time. It's not something you do over the weekend.
Whatcalls you toCanada, may I ask? Honestly, some of the hunts in Africa are less expensive than those north of the US border. Is there something so different there thatdraws you which cannot be foundelsewhere? They have fishing in Africa too... Is it the plane ride? Certainly your choice of weapon will inflence your decision as towhich animals you have the confidencein killing. I personally havenever run up against something I felt I couldn't kill quickly or humanely with my archery gear. Moreover, there have been many that have gone before me who have proven it can be done.Just recently, a young lady drilled a bull elephantfrom 12 yards with a single arrow. A good friend of mine, Ricardo Longloria has killed elephant and hippos with bow and arrow(he green darted a rhino). He had the time of his life! Quickly answer me this. If I pay all of your expensives for a ten day/ eight animalsafari, would you go? Is it about the animals/adventure, or is it about the money? |
RE: What Animals?
I had to laugh.....zebra, I know many guys don't want to shoot a "horse" personally I say, where does the line begin.....I'm not a big fan of horses, so shooting a zebra, can't wait! haha. I've also heard the opposite, many guys hate horses....or just al lthe bad experiences with horses, theyre ready to shoot a zeeb!
I really can't think of something I don't want to take with a bow, least not here in NA, africa however, I want to use a rifle first, then maybe down the road a bow, to me africa big game just is why rifles were built, so yes ill be bring guns to africa for my first hunt, not a bow. Why don't I like the idea of Elephants being shot with a bow? And no disrespect huckleberry, I just don't think it is nessesary!
I would never, never shoot a Party Animal with my bow! I really enjoy watching a party animal in its natural setting. I love the feelling I get watching a party animal do what it does best,,,,,Party! expecially a female Party Animal...God I love a good female Party Animal. Nope would never shoot one of those... |

a bird in the top of the tree

RE: What Animals?
Huckleberry,
You have one of the best outlooks on this topic &I like to read what you have to say. You certainly make the most of trying to hunt a lot of different critters in a lot of different places. |
RE: What Animals?
skunk . I don't want to deal with the smell. i don't know if you could ever get that smell off your arrow
|
RE: What Animals?
I watched a Elephant bow hunt on tv and the Elephant was just standing there as the guy walked up to it, the Big thing just kind of dropped its ears and looked like a sad dog, the guy looked to be about 15 yards or so and the shot, the Elephant kind of walked off slowly and fell over dead after awhile. And the guy was like "OH BOY, I CAN'T BELIVE THIS", I thought it was nonsence.

RE: What Animals?
i wont shoot a zebra, wolf, imported exotics from africa (if their in africa completely different) or any fenced game

RE: What Animals?
MM,
It's hunting man! Sometimes it's easy. Sometimes it's hard. Do you think they are going to show the hard hunts on TV? Here's an insert from an incident that happened to a PH I hunted with: PH Killed By Elephant Published: June - 2007 Over in Botswana we have news of a PH being killed in the field. South African PH Christo Andre Kaiser, owner of Unico Hunting Safaris, was killed by an elephant on May 11. He was in the field with Spanish clients in NG42 in northern Bots- wana, on an elephant safari booked through Johan Calitz Safaris, when the fatal accident occurred. It seems Kaiser and his tracker left the safari vehicle to look over some elephants in a pan when a cow elephant they had not seen charged without warning. Kaiser, who for some reason was unarmed, and the tracker ran back to the vehicle for cover, but the elephant overtook Kaiser, mortally wounding him. Christo left behinda wife and three daughters-the oldest girl could not be more than ten years of age. You can bet all those that knew Christoare still saying "oh boy, I can't believe this". |
RE: What Animals?

RE: What Animals?
Sorry for your loss of a hunting buddy. My feelings remain the same on this subject about elephants, and it is my oppinion, so please respect it. Now I would love to wack a Kudo or Water Buck with my bow and stick, I think that would be splended!
|
RE: What Animals?
MM,
No disrespect intended, I apologize if I've upset you. I was merely trying to point out that hunting is not always black and white. Elephant hunting is necessary to maintain a health herd and environment. Moreover, these beasts are a far cry from being sad puppies waiting to have an arrow driven through thier bodies-that's all. I think it's great! Ipray you do arrowa water buck or kudu. Gemsbok are awesome also! |
