Turkey hunting w/ future father-in-law...yay
Well, just got off the phone planning a turkey hunt with my future father-in-law. Sounds like fun, huh? I'm actually not looking forward to it. The guy is a great turkey hunter. Every year he consistently puts down a gobbler or two in the fall and the spring.I don't know if I canattribute that to him being a good turkey hunter or the fact he uses a "snipered" up .223! [&:]
Anyway, I'm talking to him and he tells me he clean misses a bird this morning at 250 yards and so does his nephew who also uses a"sniper rifle".Usually, he aims for the neck and downs them everytime. I told him I was bringing the 12 gauge and not my .223 cal. He says, "Well, we'll have to get them in pretty close since you're bringing that. They are pretty spooked right now." I'm thinking yeah I bet sinceeveryone isshooting at them. I'm sorry but wheres the fun shooting a bird so far away? I wanted to hunt together to spend some "bonding time" together but I'm thinking I just want to go off by myself and do my own thing now. Good thing I decided not to bring my bow. That would have been unheard of! There are other things in the deer woods that I don't agree with but I bite my tongue. My fiance knows I don't agree with his hunting style. She understands what type of hunter I am. I'm lucky to have her.:) Sorry fellas, just needed to get that one off my chest. Good news though. My dad and I are going Friday morning. |

Flip him out and take your bow!!:D

RE: Turkey hunting w/ future father-in-law...yay
even if we could legally use rifles here, theres no way in hell i would, same with baiting
i guess its when personal ethics comes in though, everyones different |
RE: Turkey hunting w/ future father-in-law...yay
yeah I would be upset too. So much more fun to get them closer to either shoot them with a shotgun/bow. Hunting turkeys with a rifle just doesn't get you the experience you are suppose to have turkey hunting. I love to set up in the morning and then move if need be to wherever they are gobbling!

RE: Turkey hunting w/ future father-in-law...yay
im not saying its easy, but its pretty dang simple to get a turkey within 300 yards of you, its those last 60 that seem impossible which is why a bow or shotgun is so challenging and much more fun.....i could kill at least 20 turkeys a day if i used a rifle

I guess you're right. Now I know some do have it worse. I'm just glad we don't hate each other. That wouldn't be good. |

She understands what type of hunter I am. I'm lucky to have her.:) Sorry fellas, just needed to get that one off my chest. Good news though. My dad and I are going Friday morning. Hunter Hank knew everything about hunting and was never underpowered in the woods. He hunted deer with a .30-378 even though it was his "Elk Gun". He took any shot he could get on a deer and frustrated the heck out of me every time a gutshot deer needed to be found. You could never tell the man a word about hunting because he was the expert. He got us lost in a swamp in Northern Wisconsin with his GPS because he only locked on to two satellites supposedly and used a million candlepower to get through the woods. I look back and I know he meant well and took me on a couple of great trips but what I will remember most is going to be the title of a book that I want to write one day "Everything I know about hunting wasn't because of my Father-In-Law" If you ever need to vent feel free, I have been through it!!! |

MAn, I feel for you guys. I actually get along great with my FIL. He is the guy that got me into hunting. I think the fact that I was young when I started dating my wife helps. of coure there are times when we disagree, but I can't imagine the torture you guys go through. You all make me feel lucky!

RE: Turkey hunting w/ future father-in-law...yay
Last time I saw the Ex-Father-In-Law he had just bought a Dodge quad cab and a Four Wheeler. He showed me how the after market boxes on the Four Wheeler were Black so he painted them Camo. I looked at the thing and he had huge chrome rims. I asked him about them and he said "They are the coolest rims you can get for it and I got aftermarket tires. I am going to Colorado on a public land bowhunt for Mullies and Elk"
I looked at him and asked why the heck he bothered with the paint if he was going to tear up the trails with his cool chrome rims, he just stared and had no answer. I truely could care less if I ever see him again, my hunts are just fine without him!! |
RE: Turkey hunting w/ future father-in-law...yay
I say go with him and have fun, assuming its legal. It's just another way to hunt turkeys that puts the challenge on long range shooting skills rather than calling skills. It's not a big deal! Because he gets a challenge from doing this a different way shouldn't get in the way of bonding with the father of your wife to be, bigger happiness issues are at play here. Go, hunt, do it his way. Later on, bring him hunting with you and do it your way to show him the other side.

RE: Turkey hunting w/ future father-in-law...yay
lol i didnt realize how many guys really dont get along w/ there signifiant others familiy! i get along w/ her father slick but her brother and her brother-in-law who is a pig for the state of n.h. so you know he knows everything. i wouldnt do anything you wouldnt normally do. sounds like you have good ethics and there your personal choices to make for your self not for domeone else to make. one example i can think of while turkey hunting w/ my g/fs brother was we see a big tom cross a road and stand in the woods strutting around he wanted me to blast it from the rd which was leagle but it just didnt seem right. hes like we can make up a story to tell everyone. hahaha! can you believe that! since then all the turkeys and deer and stuff hes killed you have to wonder how those hunts all shook out.
not to mention how dangerous that sounds to shoot turkeys from that range w/ a centerfire rifle! what if someone was in the background "working" those birds or somethin?! remeber the prostaffer who was killed setting in his goose decoys last fall? whats the differance |
RE: Turkey hunting w/ future father-in-law...yay
I cant stand anybody in my wifes family and they cant stand me. My FIL lives outta state so i rarely see that stupid drunk @$$. Her family is so needy they are the type that always need to borrow a vehicle, or need to borrow money, or need to borrow some kinda tool, or want you to go mow their yard. I cant stand them they mooch mooch mooch off my wife and I.

RE: Turkey hunting w/ future father-in-law...yay
I guess I'm the lucky one to have a great (future) family of in-laws. They all hunt, and I get along with them all. I've honestly got to say that I'm really really lucky to have them around. I haven't hunted with her dad yet but it's only a matter of time till I get to share some time in the woods and I'm looking forward to it. So far I'm hoping maybe the weekend of 24th he will let me try and call in a bird for him.
