Goin Huntin TOMORROW(Updated no Bird yet)

I am headed to my property in IL tomorrow. Gonna see if I can get my first gobbler with a bow. I took my blind out there this morning so I wouldn't have to haul it up the hill tomorrow. There were at least 3 birds on my prop this morning, and I could hear 10 to 12 in the neighborhood. I haven't seen them using the field there, but I am going to set up and call some and see if they come in to check out my decoys. It sounded like they were split up this morning. So hopefully one will be without hens and want some company.

I KNOW. About 8:30 this morning they had a knockdown drag out battle on the neighbors property. I could hear them going at it from my side and it sounded like a real battle. I hope one of those big boys is gonna hate my jake tomorrow.;)

Well, the turkeys were doing what they are supposed to do. So I didn't get one this morning.

I climbed to the top of the hill by 5:15. Got my blind all set up and ready with the dekes out front. At 5:50 I heard a gobble about 80 or so yards away on the ridge. Then they started gobbling all around me. But he was the closest one. After he cut loose a few times I let him know where I was with a few soft yelps. He responded right away with a gobble. I heard him fly down about 6:30ish. I yelped a few more times and he hammered right back. But the hens he was roosted with started talking and flew down too. That was pretty much the end of calling thet one in. They played around on the ridge for a while and I tried a few more calls. But he wanted me to join their party. They finally left the other way.

An hour or so later I heard 2 birds gobbling another direction. So I got as close as I thought I could and set up again. I don't think these 2 had hens but they would not come in either. I could see them strutting on a ridge about 100 yards away. I even tried getting real aggressive with my calls. They would double and tripple gobble at my cackling but would not budge. I figured if they would see my decoys they might come in. But they never got close enough.

Then when they lost interest that was the last I heard all morning.

Time for round 2 tomorrow. I may see if I can sneak in closer on my first set up in the morning. I am going after the closest one I hear and move in on him in the dark and set up. If I can get them to see my decoys I think they would come in. But they aren't coming out into the fields yet. The woods are so wide open they can see forever in there and don't have to leave the woods to be seen. Maybe it will be better after green up and thjey have to come out in the open to be seen.
