Ghetto Tip Of The Day
 

Not sure if anyone has tried this but thought I would share it. I have been busted in the past with Can Calls, tip the thing and out of nowhere a dang deer pops out and looks upwards instead of at my direction. I then had an extremely ghetto idea that I decided to try.

I took a can call, piece of baseboard trim, swivels and some old fishing line. I took the swivels and tied line through the top of the can and then tied off the bottom. Then I took 40 feet of fishing line and connected it to both sets of swivels. I cut small notches in the baseboard and got 25 feet up and calibrated it so that you can just tilt your wrist a quarter turn down and then back up and bahhhhhh she goes. I then covered the baseboard on camo tape. The rig works great, I have tested it with deer at 20 yards and they look at the base of the tree and not up in it. This might sound ghetto but I carry the crappy looking ghetto call on all my hunts in trees.

If you try this use mono and not braided, sometimes the rig spins and braided line doesn't allow it to tip of there is an abundance of spin due to line on line friction.

Wow! And to think I gave up on the can call two years ago since I never had a deer pay a lick of attn to it.

That stupid lil can works great up here as long as there is a deer close enough to hear the thing. I have three examples from the last two seasons in the upper left.

I'm a big fan of the can calls. In my experience, they are the only type of deer calls that work.... I'm sure if our buck:doe ratio was more like it is in the mid-west or Texas then rattling and grunting may produce better results... but in my part of the world.. you are just making noise. Can calls seem to work well when you have spotted the deer already and are just trying to steer them your way. I've had several deer come my direction to investigate.

Radio controlled just wouldn't be ghetto! I'm not kidding, this call is GHETTO but it works. My hunting buddies all laugh at it, but they all live with the fact that it works and they are too lazy to make one. It is like a little Primos Puppet:D

I'm not sure will would be happy knowing his image has gone GHETTO. Though I could see a truth episode with a little 50 cent "In the club" faintly playing while the announcer says "Now for your ghetto hunting tip of the day".

I am not trying to hijack your post, but I have another idea for people to try. Some of you may have tried it already. I had a guy show me how to do it. It is the same principal as the primos puppet show, but it is a rattling puppet show.

You take you favorite rattlingantlers and drill holes in the bases, then you run rope, something lightweight, but heavy duty. Each antler get a seperate rope. Come up about two feet and then tie them together with a long piece of rope.

When you are in your stand hang on to the rope and lower the antlers to the ground. If you pull them up of the ground and keep the rope tight all you have to do is just bounce the up and down a little bit to get the sound of bucks messing around. If you lift them up about 5 feet and drop them you get the big crash you here at the start of a fight. Another great thing to do with them is to toss them out in front of you and the drag them back through the leaves while they are clanking together. It makes for a very realistic fighting noise. My favorite part about them is they are not in the tree with you. If you are rattling and you see something coming just let go of the rope. You don't have put the antlers away and get your bow and all that. You can even do it with one hand and have your bow in the other.

It takes a little practice, but it does make using antlers to rattle with a lot easier, and I think more effective.

Here are some pics of the ghetto-puppet-can. One showing it nocely stows into the removeable mini pack of my backpack and a couple of the rig itself. It isn't pretty but it is a deadly part of the ghetto arsenal.

Ghetto has been twisted in recent years. I am a call center manager and we have a culturally diverse workplace so here goes. Ghetto initially would be a term for a poor neighborhood area of course and in recent times the term ghetto has been used as a sub term to define something that is "Stupid" "Cheesy" "Not purchased". I like to also align it with the term "Redneck Engineering"

So a ghetto tip is something you can't buy that you make or utilize to accomplish a goal. It can be very cheap to produce yet have very positive results. It can save you money or allow you to get things you normally can't afford etc. It might not be pretty but darn it works!!

One spot I hunt is near a forrest preserve in a town that has occasional shootings, muggings, the list goes on. I drove by the area yesterday and three teenagers were walking down the street drinking tall boy cans of beer outta a brown paper bag. I use ghetto tip because I hunt and work in an area that isn't exactly wholesome like where I grew up but it has allowed me a more urban approach to my redneck engineering tactics.
