Memory & Experience VS. Wall Hanger.

Guys...I'm flopping around here indulging in my passion for memories of my hunts and the chills that run from each harvest...a sun rise...a braking branch, a coopers hawk taking a dove just before a doe kill...

How many of you are into mounts on the wall?

How many of you embrace your experiences and hold them in your heart?....
I love my hides on the wall...but I'm an emotional guy and embrace the moments...

Schultzy...you may enter at anytime....[8D]

Are you on Estrogen pills!!??

Is there some reason that you can't have both? All of it put together is what my memories are made of.

Now here's a useless poll. It's like asking a bunch of guys at The Animal House if they enjoy toga parties.

a little of both for me.

memories made afield are priceless...weather its seeing a redtail nail a tweety bird out of the air, or watching a buck make a rub or scrape, or watching a squirrel get ready for a long winter...i enjoy it all. try not to let those "little things" pass me by as i hunt.

but, mounts for the wall are also about memories. i got a button buck hide at the tannery and a 1.5yo buck at the taxidermist. why? they arent "trophys" hopefully wont be my biggest or last...but they were both "firsts" first bowkill buck and the button buck was my first kill with the flintlock...i got a squirrel mounted...it is a real unique color...i got a 13 inch trout mounted!! only because it was beautiful and died before i landed it...figured why waste it? it looks awesome on my wall.

who wouldnt love to fill a room with giant buck mounts? who knows how many more i may have mounted...i might mount the next one i kill...i might not have another mounted for a long long time...when i kill him, i will decide what im doing with him. i dont kill bucks to mount them...id go broke quick, and run out of room on the wall lol...some might say why kill them if im not going to mount them?? i love venison and love to hunt and fill the freezer and even small antlers are special to me and get put on the wall...

I would have to chose both as well every time i look at one of my mount on my wall i replay the hunt in my mind not just the kill but everything that happened that day or even days leading up to the day of the kill. Thats why i hunt, memories and something for the wall

I'm sorry Brian but that is too funny not to highlight
I trophy hunt but part of being a good hunter is woods awareness. I take in all that is happening and find enjoyment in all the other things that happen around me.

I also lean towards both... Like most I love the 'little' things that happen in the outdoors\nature - and bowhunting makes me feel like I'm part of that... But trophy bucks (or whatever) is what drives me to get up morning after morning...

But this is an official HNI poll. You can't go both ways. It's forbidden and unnatural.[8D] AND... against the bible.

I guess if I had to choose I would go with memories, but isn't putting horns on the wall a part of memorializing the hunt? They're intertwined if you ask me.

Estrogen pills, that's great!

I guess whatmy post was suppose to mean.... is the experience more important then showing off a set of horns?

Put that way, it's the experience. Hands down.

Experience and time spent in the woods with friends and family is everything to me. No mount could ever do that for me. Mounts are nice as well too being when you look at them the hunt sometimes comes back to life.

We all have so much passion for what we do, it is this and so much more.
Memories, mounts, road trips, new friends, old friends, family, I could go on and on.

I have'nt and hope I never do.
Don't we all want something bigger than the year before or maybe a shot at something you missed than was bigger than anything you seen in the bush in your life? I'm not going to shoot no small buck when I have the potential to harvest 200"'s so I pass up some bucks that I wished I had shot come end of season. I too am waiting for the monster whitetail but come elk as long as its a legal bull I'm sticking it.

Bobby

p.s. I didn't vote but just wanted to state my opinion.

Absolutely. However, I do like having something tangible to remember the experiences by as well. In all honesty, my most memorable moments in the field have no set of antlers to go along with them, and in some respects that does bother me. The problem with just having the memories is that over time they fade, become blurry, and we just can't remember every single detail. Having both really helps after 10+ years have passed.

With that said the experience is the most important. However, I don't mount antlers on the wall for anyone but myself. That is part of how I remember the hunt, and sometimes I'll just go through and look at each of them remembering the events of the day.

I have a friend and he and his father keep most of their antlers in a box.[&:] To me that doesn't make much sense, and they seem to be more concerned with getting the next one than enjoying the memories of the past ones.

We all have our own reasons for enjoying the hunt though.

When you word it like that, I would have to say that the experience is much more important than a set of horns. There are several expereiences in the woods that you cannot put on the wall, like you mentioned. Sunlight shooting through the pines at daybreak, squirell fights (that would actually bea cool mount if you wanted to do it) the peak of the fall leaves, watchin that black bear comin barrelin down the ridge and run out everything (including you out of your mind scared to death) in the entire woods, those are all irreplaceable.

With that being said, mounts help keep other succesful memories fresh and keep a constant reminder of that adrenaline rush we all crave. Not only are they beautiful they give that deer an 'extended life' so to speak.

I hunt for the love of hunting, and am not a big "antler" guy.

But...I would like to get one full mount walter of each species I hunt to put on the wall. (Mule deer, whitetail deer & elk). So far I only have plaque mounts of my bucks and one bull, and a nice mount of an Alaskan caribou. Hoping to add a bear rug this spring :)
