GMMAT's post got me wandering
So is planting a food plot baiting??
|
RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
In some cases yes, in some no. Size does matter ,[:-]andso does location, deer numbers & food availability.
So well maybe,I guess,sometimes.;) |
RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
I think so. The food is there specifically to attract game animals.
I plant food plots so don't think I am looking down on anyone;) |
RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
I can see it going both ways.....and have no problems distinguishing it as either (is or isn't).
Me? I'd say it is. I draw the line (a hard line some would say) at indigenous species. If corn; soy beans; rape, brassica and imperial whitetail blendd allgrow naturally where you hunt.....then I'd say you weren't baiting;) |
RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
I never thought about it but I would have to say I think it is. I have no problem with it but its put there just like a bait pile to attract game!

RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
Well let me say..That I probably was the voice behind this particular post.
Yes it is a form of baiting, sorry thats my opinion and I'm entitled to it. But You'll also see that I'm not denouncing baiting. If I had the land, your damned right I'd have food plots. I'd grow better, healthierdeer, and keep them on my property. I don't bait with food during the season. I use corn, I use minerals, for my game cams before the season. We just seem to bash the guy with the feeder and then admire the guy with the food plot..it's that double standard that irks me. They are doing the same thing. One is mechanical to do the planting and one is mechanical to do the feeding. So you can't have it both ways, if your for it and have food plot, don't bash the guy with the feeder. I don't do either..but I'm not against either, either (if legal in your State) |

RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
For all practical purposes....absolutely it is. But legally, at least in MO, it isn't.....so....I'll plant them and hunt over them.
Is it hypocritical of me to say, immediately after that, that I won't hunt over a bait pile? |

RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
I don't think so, Don. It would be hypocritical if you condemned them for the practice (those who DO hunt over a bait pile);)
|
RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
Absolutely it is baiting. But, it is beneficial for the herd, it kind of goes hand in hand with QDM.

RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
Nope. I don't have either.
|
RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
I guess the point was already made that some guys are quick to jump on those who bait but yet plant food plots and hunt them. I know in Pa. you can not bait but you can plant food plots I see no difference and have no problem with it either way!

RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
I guess I'm the only one that plants a food plot ( 6 acres) to benefit all of the animals inthe woods all year round.
When February comes and the snows butt deep I'll bet dollars to donuts that not many you are carryingthose fifty pound bags of corn out to your feeders like you do in October.[:o] And really its not that hard to fill one buck tag in PA,and for those of you who need to bait to kill a doe your most likely meant for indoor sports any way.;) |

RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
I FEEL IT IS, IF YOU PUT SOMETHING OUT AND EXPECT IT TO BRING ANIMALS IN THEN YES IT'S BAITIING, IMHO
|
RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
I don't bait and I don't have food plots. I don't believe that a food plot is baiting.
Under Wisconsin law, baiting is (in most places) illegal and food plots aren't. I am in line with this thinking. I also don't believe that hunting the edges of crop fields is considered baiting. |

RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
Yes, IMO its baiting but I'd say its a more beneficial way to feed the deer.

RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
Yes, food plots are bait. They are put their for the sole purpose of attracting and holding game with no interest in harvesting the crops for food.
A corn, soybean, or alfalfa field that are planted as crops to be harvested are not bait IMO, but serve the same purpose for a hunter as a food plot. When it comes to food plots, bait, crops, etc. if it is legal and it will help me kill deer, then I'm all for it. |
RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
Yes it is baiting, I grew up hunting where it is legal and on our family ranch we have planted for the deer herd every year since I can remember being in the field. I also see it as being very beneficial to your herd and that is our purpose. We also put out supplement such as minerals and protein as in my neck of the woods there are no crops to keep the herd at their best potential. During most winters there is hardly anything for the herd to browse. I view it as a responsibility to the herd that I hunt to try and help them to be healthier and grow to their best potential. I am 35 now and have been doing it this way since I started hunting, it is now more than just killing for me, I see it as raising a herd. If I get bashed, so be it, we have a difference of opinion. I won't loose any sleep over it.

RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
I would say yes
|
RE: GMMAT's post got me wandering
You know the funny thing is I can be directly over a corn feild edge and if there is some kernnals on the ground under me thats BAITING. I went threw this last year here with the game comission. I to carry bags out to feed the deer for camera purposes and to give them some extra food over the winter, but if every kernnal of that is not cleaned up 30 days b4 hunting and out of there you got a problem. I had the anti call me in for baiting cause I was getting pictures and yes it was all cleaned up b4 30 days but this guy knew no better.
I ask the warden I said say I missed some kernnals he said thats baiting and I said right there is a 50 acre corn feild thats bait he said no. The laws are funny but hey I follow them and dont disagree with the way anyone hunts! |
