RE: Simple question....Do you hunt "Baited" animals?

Ag crops may "act" as bait but that is not their purpose. The same with the oak stand. It may act as bait but that is not its purpose. And the purpose of the food source is what defines it, IMO.
I have a neighbor who owns 15 acres, Bruce. She is ADAMANTLY "anti-hunting"......yet she feeds the deer 12mos. out of the year. I hunt right on top of her land.....and I've been successful in doing so.

So.....the "purpose" is not to bait deer for me to kill. What's the "reality"? Am I hunted "baited" deer?;)

Depends on what you consider baiting I guess. Baiting is legal in Michigan and I do it to a certain extent. I don't leave bait out all season like some do, or use a feeder or anything like that. However on occasion I have been known to dump a few apples on the ground and smash a few. From what I have seen it really does nothing to bring deer in. What it does do sometimes is get the ones that walk by to stop for a second or two right where I want them and give me a chance at a good shot. Doesn't always work though, some just walk right by anyway.

I honestly don't see it being any different than using scent lure, decoys or calls. All of them are an artificial means of attracting deer to your location. And I don't use any of those. I have tried them in the past with little success so I don't bother with it now. More hassle than what it was worth in my case.

I tend to hunt more open areas as well like meadows and field edges. Not by choice really, that is just the opertunities I end up with. I take what I can get and I can't afford nor do I want to lease land to hunt on.

IMO, yes because the purpose of of her plantings are to feed the deer. The food she plants is used to attract deer, that is its purpose.

Nope, I don't bait. I think here is VA you can bait up until September or so but definitely not during the seasons. I don't need to bait to kill an animal and thats not a bash to anyone who decides to do so.;)

Jeff, define a situation in which a deer IS NOT baited under your scrutiny.

Perhaps the only thing that comes to mind is an unweened fawn?

Not legal in my state, so, no, I don't do it.

I honestly am not sure how I would feel if it were legal. Too many other things to think about than worry about the hypothetical.

In IL, 'tis illegal, so no.

In MI, legal and yes we bait. Always have since a little kid, and have a ton of fun doing, just watching deer.

Bruce....Interesting discussion......but I'd ask if the HUNTER'S "intent" had any influence on your definitions? Why is HE hunting the ag crops?

Under the strictest definiton of "baiting", (IMO), Bob.......I'm not sure there is one. I'm OK with that.;)
