And if baiting were not advantageous and unfair why was it banned when the results of it decimated wildlife in the earlier part of this century.
Jim....It's my understanding that food plots were once illegal in PA (if you intended to hunt over or near them). Is that true?
No idea my about old laws I'm farming so I don't worry about baiting laws. I could shoot any deer I want any time of year for crop damage.[:o]

I'm just a piss poor farmer and don't get my crops harvested in a timely manner.;)
This was me harvesting last years corn crop.

Yes it is legal. I have taken deer both with and without it. Prefer without it.

Let me ask one question, If you are out to catch a fish, how would you rather do it? With a Bait? Or with a trap?

Somebody? Anybody?

We have caught deer in hog traps here Schultzy. My point is, it all depends on how you want to do it. Do you want to kill deer the easy way (bait), or do you want to take the other route and use skills?;)

Well, if we were all deer, we'd be dead. GMMAT has baited us in this post, and we all walked into it.I can't believe anydody who hunts is really that concerned about whether a food source is commercially harvested,or therestrictly for the consumption of deer. I think manyof you are goiing oppisiteonly because of your views of the poster.I've spent the last three years (with my best bud), trying to develope a habitat for quail. It's been a lot of work. Building brush on the edges offields, planting lesppedeza, placing seed feeders, and on and on. We've gone from a a few bird here and there, to a couple dozen blitziing around. Nothing to hunt yet, but we're getting there, and enjoying watchingwhat we've built. Is anybody really opposed to food plots? We can go on about feeders, but food plots? Wasn't there a guy who posted a picture of an arrow going through a deer eating on his feeder last year? If thats his thing, good for him. It ain't me, might not be you, but screw it. If he's happy, good for him.

yep..... those buggers are smart.... i need every advantage i can get!! actually hunt both ways with an without... i like with cause i always seen game.. but i feel when i hunt without i got a chance of taking a better buck!

RE: Simple question....Do you hunt "Baited" animals?

Reasons I don't like baiting:
Mature deer rarely visit them during legal shooting hours.
Does tend to congregate near bait. This makes the bucks have to travel less to locate does during the rut. Less buck movement = less opertunity to shoot them.
On public land - when someone baits they tend to claim that area as theirs. Causing turf wars.
I believe that baiting allows you to see more deer but actually makes your chances of taking a trophy a lot less likely.
Again I want to stress that I am not against other people baiting - to each his own.

We should make this a Poll. YES OR NO

We have a 2 gallon rule here in Michigan. I bait deer on most occasions near home and one in a while on the 500 acres I hunt in the thumb...During late season when going for a Muzzleloader doe.

RE: Simple question....Do you hunt "Baited" animals?

In Michigan its 3 gallons spread out over a 10ftx10ft area. Thats some pretty sparse feed. But it is to keep the deer from nose feeding, and spreading TB. Bow hunting isnt so busy, but if you hunt state land during rifle season, baiting really helps. The woods are so full and the deer are so pressured, that if you dont give them a reason to show up, they wont. I always bait during firearm season, and have yet to shoot a buck off the pile. They are usually too jittery once the shooting starts to stop and eat for very long. But it brings in the does, and the immature bucks. Usually once the does show up, a buck will show up sooner or later. All the bucks I've killed while baiting were not within 15ft of the pile, only passing through looking for the does.

RE: Simple question....Do you hunt "Baited" animals?

Be it a feeder, food plot, honeysuckle, corn broadcasted on the ground with a spreader or food scent...its all a FORM of baiting.

So, why I dont put out corn...I do hunt planted fields and areas in which I attempt to keep a consistent food source for deer to rely on...thats baiting !!

I don't view a food plot as bait. Do I have them? Yes. Do I hunt them? Yes. I view them as something that is providing a YEAR LONG benefit to my deer herd. I have both warm season and cool season plots. I don't solely plant them to hunt on them. There is a major difference between the guy that buys a 200 dollar feeder and 300 lbs of corn and sits 20 yards away verses a guy that gets out and sweats clearing land, tilling land, and plants and maintains plots.

No, I don't bait. Yes, it is illegal in my hunting area.

Nope, not legal here in Minnesota, but if it was.......... yes I would. ;)

RE: Simple question....Do you hunt "Baited" animals?

YEs it is legal and yes I do it on corn piles. I hardly ever kill a buck off of a corn pile and I havent in two years. The food plot is by far more productive (and cheaper to boot) so I am switching to all food plots and acorns.;)
