RE: What Stage Hunter Are You?

ok im not one to argue but the different stages really dont seem to improve.......if im correct shouldnt trophy hunting and learningabout deer be as important as stage number 5 and this goes along with magicmans post.....why cant we be more than one of these. we all have our own unique style of hunting that cant be explained on a scale of 1-5

The King simply doesn't buy into this whole "stages" business. Granted, those generalizations might be a good fit for some, but hunting is a highly subjective endeavor, and you just can't categorically shoe-horneveryone into one of these five "stages."

I agree, with a lot of you guys, not really thinking the staging system fits my style of hunting or the "level of maturity," I am personally at in regards to deer hunting. No change it to ELK hunting, and I'm a definite STAGE 1, but as far as whitetail hunting goes, I'm like several others here, a combination of 3,4,5. I also think we change a little during seasons, from season to season, from place to place. I've hunted places where the landowner wanted animals killed, therefore I was a brown is down hunter per owner request, and I've hunted places where the landowner didn't want us killing anything but MATURE deer.

RE: What Stage Hunter Are You?

Wow guys, I never thought an argument would be started over this thread. There was a study done by a university and the study was done on 1000 deer hunterhunters (not very many) and it was found that many hunters fell into these stages. No one is trying to say that you have to adhere to a certain stage or anything, there just generalizations as to the stages most hunters go to. I didn't mean in posting this to make people feel they had to be in one stage or another. And, those of you who felt that I was saying you have to fit into these categories, I apologize to you.

Why would I view them as dreams or goals if I fit the description of that stage? You yourself said you fit 2 different stages so why rail on me because I feel that I fit 3-4-5. For your info, I trophy hunt for the personal challenge. Not to impress anyone else. I am constantly trying to learn more about deer. I am a conservationist and I am always willing to help new people get involved. As I said in my original post, I don't agree with the breaking down of hunting into these 5 catagories. Am I to give up hunting mature deer in order to move from 3 to 4? I don't believe so. Can I hunt mature deer and still help young people get involved? YES! I believe you should do your research before lecturing me.
Exactly what I'm saying. No need to get offended at anything anyone is saying. Some people fit exactly into categories while others fit into multiple categories. And, if someone is simply making a suggestion, is it necessary to respond with such hostility and antagonism? Wouldn't it be more appropriate and succesful if a response was more in the nature of "I disagree with you because..." instead of "for your info!":)Let's all just get along!

It's good to be the King!

Which brings me to my next point. GMMAT and magicman, why not view these as dreams or goals? If you are in stage , why not shoot for stage 4 (as I am doing) to better your woodsmanship and hunting abilities. Just a thought.
I just don't (no offense) like to label myself as a (__________) hunter. Like I said....I likely fit into several of those "stages"......depending on which property I'm hunting.......which WOODLOT I'm hunting on the same property, etc.... I don't dislike the system.....just don't see it as that simple to "label" one's hunting.

And GMMAT, you've been bowhunting 2 or 3 years, you're what's called a Rookie. LOL
No problem with that assessment.

Hear! Hear!, Magicman.;)

Well said, Fran.

I'm kind of a combination of 2-5 LOL. I like to shoot a lot of deer, I am selective in the bucks I shoot, but not necessarily only concerned with antler, I am an extreme student of deer behavior, and have always looked for ways to be involved in stewardship.

I guess I am a version 2.34.5.;)
I looked for someone who thought like I do ...... I agree with Bry here ......

I also agree with GMMAT, Magic, Quik and Doug..... it's very personal and impossible to labeled ... at least for us...

I think I am a stage 3 right now, without spending any time in stage 2. NEver felt the need to kill numbers of deer each season, or numbers of anything really, whether it was grouse, geese, fish.
