Someone took out my bright eyes!
...and it's just a little disheartening thatsomeone would mess with a fellow hunter's hunting. Why? Does he feel better knowing that someone will stumble around in the dark a little extra long to find their tree?
This reminds me of the time someone sabbotaged my bow rope by cutting it and leaving just a few strands. Some people just suck. |
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
Had the same problem man, i had bright eyes up that led me through the swamp and to this island that had tons of deer activity. I went in one evening and when I tried to leave at dark I could not find my way. If you know anything about swamp...it gets very tricky if you don't know exactly where to go. Luckily I had my cell phone and was able to call for help or I would have been lost for quite some time

RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
I hunt National Forest land and I am sick of all the markers left in the woods. I pull down all that ugly flagging tape all the time. That crap ruins the beauty of the woods and I consider it litter. I don't use it and I seem to find my way to my stand.
|
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
hmmm, I never thought about it that way butI don't consider reflective tacks as litter. They're so little and don't really get in anybody's way. Hey let me ask you this... Ifbright eyes aren't illegal, why mess with them? If you dotake them downthough they are presumably legal, then what would stop you from removing someone's legal mineral lick?
|
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
some federal land I hunt they are not legal . I pull them out all the time . It is sad that some people need that many tacks in the woods to find a tree .
|
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
GPS;)
|
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
Oh boy a can of worms!!! I don't like the tape myself! I have no problem with the tacks. If the tacks were old Hoytail they do rust and fall off the tree. They are made of cheap steel and rust real easy, Maybe thats what happen.

I also agree that the tacks are much better then the flagging tape. I also see flagging tape and tacks that were abandond and not removed. UGLY!!!!! My point is I don't ugly up the woods for other people so I wish they wouldn't do it to me. If you don't put out a lot of tacks maybe I won't find your mineral lick.:D |

I think I am going to check into that. I hate the tape because it is to easy for othersto find your spot, I had never heard of the tacks before but i dont want to get in trouble if i decide to use them.

RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
why not use a gps i do when i go to michigan for my hunts best and cleanest way and no one can find where i hunt by following any markers
|
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
They just lead me to someone eles's hot spot. [8D];)
|
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
I hunted some public land last year and when i came out at dark i started seeing all these tacks light up . there where all kinds of trails criss crosssing. none of witch lead back to the parking lot. it was confusing. I used gps and followed natural marks . there were several long rock walls going thru the woods. the tape i agree looks messy if there is to much of it
|
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
it is illeagal to leave anything on public ground. Went to a new place yesterday and met up with the local officer. During the conversation he mentioned that they were removing stands left on the property and nothing could be left.
As far as your rope, critters did it. Happen to me several times, the funniest was a turtle that took forever to show himself. They don't bother me as I see them the same as Rick.[8D] |
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
They bother the heck out of me for some reason. I'm guilty of changing the trees they are on. I just wander how far a person would follow the new path before they realize it.

I have also seen some trails that have tape AND reflectors that only go maybe 100 yds in :eek:. |
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
I agree leave them alone if there not yours!! But I also say take them down when season ends!!!! I don't use them just for the reasons stated above it seems the only stands my buddies have stolen are ones they use tacks to find so every thief out there can find them to!! Walt

RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
GPS dude. They cann be had cheap now, and are very, very accurate. Mine is give or take within 3 yards accurate. I think I could manage from there.;)
Luckliy I know all the woods I hunt here locally. Anytime I go on an out of state hunting trip, I take it and map out all the spots and trails I want. Ill have em when i return next year. |
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
"Someone took out my bright eyes!"
It was probably me. If you put them in my hunting area, the next trip back they will take you on a very interesting journey. If one can't find their way around in the woods, get a gps, a seeing eye dog, tie a string to your car door or hunt within sight of the road or fire station. I have hunted for 55 years and in many states, a lot of new territory, often go 1-2 miles back in the woods and I have never placed a thumb tack or ribbon in the woods to find my way around and never will. Sorry that shows like of woodsmanship, gives away your location, gives the appearance to concern thoughtful hunters they might be walking in on some one else when in fact the "Tack Driver" now is another location littering.... I would hate to see what the woods would look like if you were a coon hunter???? Whatever one carries in the woods they should carry out...... |
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
Are some of you saying that without Flagging tape/bright eyes or GPS you would get lost in the woods??? Seriously?? I really do feel sorry for you!
|
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
Interesting opinions. I myself believe in not mucking up the forest as well. I take out all the trash I bring in. My tacks though are about every hundred yards. The particular spot I'm talking about is about 600 yards into the woods. Some of it is very thick and in the dark you will get twisteda bit.I don't believe one tack every 100yds is overkill.
I seemessing withother people's stuff kinda like keying someone's car when they're not there to do anything about it. It's just a very "punk" thing to do. GPS is in the works, I just have to get the checkbook to agree first. :D |
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
I draw a treasure map & use a compass. 40 paces east. Turn left and walk to the dead tree. Head sw 35 more paces to the mossy rock. Turn ssw and 107.5 paces to the tree. ;)
If you hunted the scrub oak like I have where I live it is very diffacult to find your stand with out them and i spend more time in the woods i hunt then anyone in fact nobody goes where i go cause of that so i find them very helpful even stands i have hunted for 30 years
Really you have hunted in an area for 30 years and you need markers to find your stands???? I hope you have reflectors on you driveway..... |

RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
Ditch the bright eyes for trails. Just signals other folks about your hunting. They're nice to put on your hunting tree. I put four on my hunting trees about 12 feet up when I'm climbing down. Makes for a great reference point when getting on a blood trail after dark.A handheld gps is the way to go.To your tree and to your truck as quiet as can be. I still carry a compass, but rarely use it anymore. I've been in the woods since I was a kid, but I'd never be able to find a tree a mile into the woods around here in Virginia, especially on a moonless night. Nothing but rolling hills. Like anything else, practice. Practice on getting in and out of a location in the dark. Use creeks, ridges, stumps, strange looking trees, anything that stands out. You'll be surprised how quick you'll start seeing in "night" vision.I've been lost, or misplaced if you will. It ain't fun. Know your terrain and you'll be fine.

RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
I think using a light is a negative in finding ones way around in the woods.. With a light one only has tunnel vision. Turn the light out and after a couple of minutes it is amazing how well one can see.
Look at tree tops, shapes, stumps, count the number of dips, valleys, ridges, logs etc. One to two trips in the woods and it is second nature. If one uses a beam of light, you miss the big picture and see only a fraction of the environment. If you need to mark a turn use a rock or a limb something that blends in nature and doesn't say I'm a rooky and I don't know my way in the woods; therefore, I am probably not versed in hunter ethics, safety, and true hunting skills. Use skill and not litter to find your way in the hunting environment. Sure it takes a little self training, but it is part of the skills of being a true woodsman. |
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!

RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
Hoyttail~~ Im sorry someone did that to you! I myself find the tacks to be a great asset to have for hunting! I do have them but hardly ever put them out for fear of having someone find my spots!
As far as Passthru and Born 2 bow hunt~~ I DO get lost in the woods, as a matter of fact I can be within 50yds from my treestand and can get myself turned around and find myself searching and this in areas that I hunt quite often! Am I stupid... NO... just human! I dont get your guys point, do you feel this makes you more macho... smarter that you dont need an aid to your spots? Its like saying you dont turn the lights on in your house when it gets dark because you know your way around!;) Also the GPS idea I agree it is a great thing to have, but I my self do not have one simply because of$$$$$.... I will stick with my 2 dollar tacks but if I had the extra cash yes GPS would be the way to go! |
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
yeah that does suck, dang thieves [:@]

RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
I'd never take anyones bright eyes... I just rearrange them to lead off into never never land so he can move some deer my way.:)
|
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
Well said WesternMdHardwoods, it's gonna be real nice when someone gets lost and possibly dies because they had a few key tacks that made sure they were on the right trail, and one of these guys that can see in the dark decides "he" doesn't need that!!
|
RE: Someone took out my bright eyes!
Well I am glad there are so many expert woods men on this site if i had open hardwood and feildsi guess i would agree but i am sure if i showed one of them experts one of my stands in the narly scrub oaks i hunt where if you get off the trail a couple feet you get stuck they would never find it in the dark that is somthing i know to be true i don t care if your Geronamo i put my tacks low in the white of moss that grows on the trees space them out as far as posible and if i caught someone screwing with my stand sites such as taking out my tacks i would stick them in there forehead but everyone livesaround me knows that so they just leave me alone

ORIGINAL: Born 2 Bow Hunt How about I leave one coke can every hundred yards.......not much is a 100 acre track of woods..... That tack is no longer yours when you leave it in the woods...It you want it to be yours...leave you name and address so this "Punk" can mail it to you...... Honestly can't you find your way around in the woods?? Leaving my address on the tack? Again, just being difficult and imo another display of stupidity. In all my spots, I can find my way to them as long as I have a little battery powered or moonlight. I will however stumble around a little extra much though and the path I take to my stand wont be as direct as if I were to follow my 4-6 markers. I don't absolutely need the bright eyes but they do make it a little easier for me in the way of not fish tailing around and increasing the chances of spooking deer. If 4-6 tacks bother you enough to take 10-15 min out of your life to remove them then you've got issues. I'd hate to get into a traffic accident with you geeez. Blackfish:
One becomes skilled in woodsmanship by building on their skills and I don't believe proper placement of tacks high or low shows any promise of a desire to be a complete hunter. If you try to stick a tack in someones head, I suggest you make your attempt at noon in a well light shopping mall, since you are not going to find anything with a flash light. Would you really become violent, if some one were to remove one of your tacks? How on earth would you find your way out of the woods if you left before dark?? Hoytailhunter: It is strange you call me “Stupid” when I am NOT the one who gets lost in the dark. Sure grown men “Prancing” around in the woods moving tacks is laughable...I laugh every time I do it. Don't you guys have any desire to learn to find your way around in the woods? It is really not that difficult...use natural markers if you must...sticks and stones...things that belong in nature. |

one of my home made verions of famous sayings is... If the shoe doesn't fit, don't wear it. If you're offended because I offered some footwear, then it must in some way fit. You totally missed my point(s) altogether. I'm not trying to be as excellent of a woodsman as you or anyone. I can find all my trees without tacks but just want to take the shortest quietest route tothat tree. I highly doubt you don't deviate from that route in the dark. "S_ _ _ _ _ people complicate simple things while smarter people simplify complicated things." Refusing to see a simple point is well you know... And I'm guilty of being a little dee dee dee myself because I just spent $154 at Red Lobster yesterday and that could've at least partically bought me a GPS. |

If every hunter put out tacks or ribbons on each of their stand locations the woods would look like a airport runway. You "tack Drivers" would have to come up with some universal color code or number system to keep everyone from ending up in the same spot??? Do you find you way around at home or do you have a tack or lettering on the doors to each room??? If other hunters can learn to find their way around the woods without leaving litter you can too. Maybe someone should bring up the question at a hunter safety meeting.. "How many tacks and ribbons and at what distance should they be placed to assure one does not get lost in the woods??" Want to guess the response you would receive.... |
