I need some good suggestions.
My broadheads don't shoot the same as my practice tips. I like to practice with my broadheads. my braoadheads really ruin my target. what I have been doing is shooting my field points and disreguarding where they hit as long as they group well. Then I shoot a few times w/ broadheads just to assure that my sites are on. Is there a better way? What do you guys do? I shoot fixed bh.

RE: I need some good suggestions.
Thats whatI do, practice with the fp's.....I will shoot my bh's before hunting but I dont shoot them all the time.

RE: I need some good suggestions.
what broadheads do you use?
|
RE: I need some good suggestions.
In my experience if you are properly tuned, and you don't torque your bow during the shot, your field points and broadheads should be grouping together all the time. I would suggest that you paper tune your bow and then maybe broadhead tune as well. If you aren't familiar with those processes, just type those phrases into Google and you will be flooded with answers. I recommend you read several of the responses, and figure out which will work for you. The technique should be about the same on all the sites, but some times people like to add there own twist. With little patients you should be able to get them all together, good luck.

RE: I need some good suggestions.
I have read a bunch of stuff concerning tuning. There seems to be quite a lot of dissagreement as to if field points and bh should shoot the same. I really dont want togo there with this thread. Maybe I'm wrong to feel this way but I dont care if they don't shoot the same. I'm looking for maybe a target that will hold up to bh or other ideas. Just from a physics standpoint it is my opinoin that its not possible to get 2 different shape objects cutting thru air @ 300fps to fly the same. Again, I dont want to start a debate on this issue. Someone asked what I am shooting : 5575 goldtip xt hunter tipped with 100gr. montec. I'm shooting 60#

RE: I need some good suggestions.
magicman, I can only tell you from my own experience, my fixed heads fly absolutely different from my fp. Now, I just started shooting fp this year, always have practiced with the BH, but, like you said, I went through 4 targets this past year, can afford to do that. My bow is tuned, and Im just gonna make adjustments as needed in Aug when I start to shoot BH. By the way, I wanted to tell you that you are great addition to this site, I enjoy your post and respect your accomplishments. Thank You Sir.;)

RE: I need some good suggestions.
I wish I could practice with BH's a lot more, but something has to give somewhere. So, like VA said, do the majority of practice with FP's, then make any adjusments when the time comes. That's how I've always done it.

RE: I need some good suggestions.
I don't know what to tell you on a good broad head target, do they make a good one is the question? I haven't seen one yet. Keep shooting the BH's Magic like you have been, thats what your hunting with. If you find a good one, please let me know so I can get a decent one. Stay away from the block, my Snuffers ate that thing up pretty quick!

RE: I need some good suggestions.
Steve, I shoot the block with fp but I can see how the BH will destroy it. I don't think we can expect a target not to get torn slam up though, after all, if the heads are doing what they should, it should destroy the target!! I know my Muzzy did this year!! Thank God I wasn't shooting a RAGE!!! It would have turned to powder after two shots!!:D

RE: I need some good suggestions.
By far the most durable broad head target I have found is the Morrell Yellow jacket. It is one of the cheapest too. I don't recommend shooting FP at it though. It doesn't like to give those back as easy.

RE: I need some good suggestions.
My technique, I just kind of shoot and hope for luck[8D]

RE: I need some good suggestions.
Magic, i myself am searching for a good one to shoot at this summer. I had the Yellow Jacket last summer and it did ok, but it is wore out!! So i'm thinkin maybe i will try the Mckenzie shotblocker or the block 4x4. The regular block doesn't hold up well at all but i think this one might be ok.

RE: I need some good suggestions.
why don;t you just get the montec g5 target broadheads. i use them, they fly the same, but are dull.
|
RE: I need some good suggestions.
Pretty much the same method as you Magic.
Look for groups with the FP & lightly tweak position with the BH. I just use a replaceable center for my 3d deer target, I can probably get 100 shots with BH aiming at variuos spots on the replacement. |
RE: I need some good suggestions.
I have never shot with broadheads since I haven't been hunting but my husband Josh does and he is using the same method as you are. About the only other thing we can think of is using home-made targets for BH and a nice one for FP's. It is a bit more work but should be cheaper. Josh paper tuned his too and they don't fly the same so he pulls out the BH's about a month before the season starts. Too bad you can't use the BH's on the self healing targets now that would be sweet!

RE: I need some good suggestions.
As a brother and a friend...I would stay with what yer doing Magic...
I won't try to convince you to goto mechanicals....But they shoot the same as field points... I always say you'll never kill a deer with either head if you make a bad hit...some people leave the mechanical world after their first bad experience...but I still love them...I've never failed with them since 1993...on well placed hits....I know I know I know....I always say this....but I love FLINT TOO.:) Shot my Longbow yesterday Shultzy...its been 8 years...It took 4 arrows to hit a large Mcdonalds cup at 15 yards...the kids were screaming so I had to go.... End Result - My elbow hurt, and the Jar had given me a headache.....I'll still hunt with her this year:D ETA for first longbow pic with whitetail.... 10/14/2008 |

RE: I need some good suggestions.
I never use more then one broad head to group or anything. I just fire one of them a few times to see if it keeps hitting the same spot then I am good. Adjust the sight accordingly if you have to but that's about it. That leaves the other two to pack into the quiver. So what do you have to do to tune your bow?

RE: I need some good suggestions.
Magic if you can make a nice size sand pit then take some wireand make a wire hanger in front ofit and hang a paper plate or something and it just goes right into the sand. Makesit a lot cheaper. IfI can get to the public range by me I will take a pic and post it for you.

RE: I need some good suggestions.
Get a good BH target and continue to shoot them. It is better to know once hunting season rolls around.
|
RE: I need some good suggestions.
I shoot my BH's exclusively starting around 3 months out from the season. They tear up my target, but I just buy a couple of cheap ones or a high quality one that will last me the whole season. I get paranoid and don't want any changes to mentally affect me when I get a shot at a deer because they are so few and far between.
However, a few years ago, I had an old Bear Whitetail hunter bow....that thing was do damn bulky, but I swear, my BH's and field points almost shot identical out of the bow, both from the ground and from the tree....I have never reproduced that set up, but dang it felt good because my confidence was so high. That bow also only had like a 50% let off and weighed a ton, but I shot a great(for my neck of the woods) buck through a very small opening at 34 yards....loved that bow. |
RE: I need some good suggestions.
Used to do it that way magicman. I broadhead tune now so the site is the same for both. As for targets, good luck. I have yet to find a BH target that will last longer than a year. I've tried most all of them.
I've went to buying a couple of the cheap off brand targets every year. Usually cheaper to get two or three of them a year than a single Block or Cube and the lifespan is the same. |
RE: I need some good suggestions.
I shoot a lot so I shoot FP's all offseason up to about Aug 1st. The I start shooting BH's a lot. My FP's and BH's hit the same place but I think you need to practice with BH's before using them. I have pounded my rinehart 18:1 target with BH's and it has held up extremely well. The way it is setup, you can shoot at the off angle bulls and the center bull and that way you can shoot 3-4 BH arrows before removing them. I also have a morrell BH target and it has held up pretty well too.
