Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
Oh my gosh....over the years....the list goes on!
How many of you hot shots have been put in your place by a great horned owl or some other hungry creature while bowhunting....??? You never hear them coming....until you hear the sound of something moving through the air and then you lube your boxers... On that note...I think I'll go get my coon hat ready for this fall :D |
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
A few times while gun hunting for Coyotes! That ole' distress call gets them old hoots all fired up!
|
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
yes sir!! a red tailed hawk nests in my honey hole...the first year i hunted there, i seen it regularly...dang near every evening it would fly from the right to left and its wing tips were within a REAL close distance of my face...must been its "flight path" or something. i felt the wind come from it many times...i love him! keeps the chipmunks in check!!! spent probably too much time watching him through the binocs!! but keeps me alert and actively watching...
watched him nail a bird out of the air..it was awesome. watching a bird that big fly though the woods just amazes me...let alone watching it kick in the after burners and clober a tweety bird right out of the sky... |
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
i havent been swooped, but ive had owls in the same tree as me
|
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
I never had a owl come at me but I did have a hawk attack a squirrel about 10 feet above me while I was on stand. It wasunbelievable I only heard wings,I looked up andthe hawk just missed grabbing the squirrel.
|
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
I had a Red tailed hawk in Michigan last year swoop not four feet from me trying to get a squirrel!!!!
|
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
Never been swooped, but my turkey decoy bout got swooped one time, all i heard was wind before i seen it.
|
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
Many times! I've heard there claws scratch my recurve too many times when raising it up to protect my face. Red tail Hawks, Great Grey Owls, Great Horned Owls, the list goes on. It sure does wake you up in a hurry when you hear them wing beats a coming!! Usually I'm half snoozed out when it happens.[8D]

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
WHILE IN TREE STANDS FOR BLACK BEAR IN SPRING HAVE HUMMINGBIRDS SCARE THE CRAP OUT OF ME NEARLY EVERY YEAR. THINK THEY ARE JUST PASSING BY THOU. HAD A HAWK COME STRAIGHT AFTER ME ONCE SAW IT COMING FROM A WAYS OFF IF I HAD NOT STOOD AND WAVED THINK IT MIGHT HAVE TRIED TO TUG ON MY BEARD. MY SON HAD GREAT HORNED OWL MAKE PASS AFTER PASS AT HIM WALKING ONE TIME.

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
Can't get any better than to see a big bird of prey in the woods. Mauser is right on the money with the after burners.I watched a big red tail powder a squirrel under full throttle and the fur flew! The funny thing is how they can avoid all the trees and branches at those speeds.
I have also watched the Ospreys at work. When they tuck their wings in for a nose dive on a fish it's pretty cool. As hunters weare so misunderstood. 99% of the time our success in the woods is measured by what we see and hear. |
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bow hunting!
not a hawk but i had a bird come in to to try and land on my hat . i flinched at the last second and felt the swoosh from the wings . last year i had a squirrel that was ready to jump to my stand about 3 feet away . gets your heart racing. cool experiences anyway

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bow hunting!
I've never been swooped, but I've watched Red Tails swoop and snag squirrels and chipmunks while hunting. Awesome to see! It really is amazing how they weave through the trees at such high speeds.

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
Didn't have time to walk to my tree stand, so I made a gorund blind close to camp where I found some fresh sign.
Standing there and I caught something out of the corner of my eye. A big ole Hawk flew bye and was so close his wing knocked my hat cock-eyed, scared the bejesus outa me |
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
Yes I have, by hawks and owls.
|
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
Yes I have been swooped,I had a small hawk pitch off a steep side bank toward me when sitting in a stand on a flat.It crossed over my knees like a rocket.I have had owls fly past me a number of times but not at blazing speeds.

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
Same here, many times and it's not pleasant when it's a suprise. Think about it, many times we stand there motionless except for out heads turning. Yeah, that looks small enough for a bird of prey.[&:]
The worst one I had was one morning I had my front to the tree looking around it, I hear this swoosh and turn just in time to see talons coming at me, I jump it veers and the wings barely clear me as it reevalutates it's prey. [8D] I had a small sparrow hawk come at me 3 times one day. I couldn't convince him I was much too big for him. ;) |
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
I've had some close calls. Only one though do I feel was a mistake for prey, the others were just coming to land on branches real close to me.
|
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
I've never been swooped but have had hawks and owls land in the tree.I've seen squirrels get hammered by hawks. I'm always amazed when I see a big old red tail or an owl silently glide throughthe woods.

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
I was in a stand last year, about 50 yrds from a creek and near a marshy area, when a flock (20,000) blackbirds decided to land in my tree and the trees surrounding me. It was like a hitcock movie. I was all camo'd out and the birds literally landed on my leg. I just clapped once and they moved about 50 yds, but when you hear 20,000 birds take off at the same time its a sound like a helicopter blade makes!

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
i had a hawk land in the tree i tried to get the carema and he took off the second i moved

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
Yep, I had a hawk of some sort in Nebraska that just wanted me dead for some reason.........I had to finally stand up and wave my bow at him. He just wouldn't let up.
Last year in IL hunting with Greg I called an entire flock of turkeys maybe 25 birds in all across a slough about 75 yards wide. They must have really liked the keekees and yelps I was throwing across because one of the jakes in the group tried to land on my thigh in the treestand. I kept saying "he's gonna swing away, he's gonna swing.......holy crap he's gonna land on me!"[:-] I jumped like a little girl when this 15lb bird's left wing seriously went right under my chin. :D |
RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
Had it happen a couple times but pnly with small hawks. The most memerable one I had was out in Colorado on a bow hunt for elk. I was sittin there early mornin just lookin around and all of a sudden I see this thing suspended int he air and getting bigger, all of a sudden I could see the straight wings and and a face headed right at me. I froze and luckily it pulled up just short of me, about 5 feetrealizing I wasn't food and landed right above me about 4 feet away just lookin at me goin what in the hell are your, lol, and I was thinkin the same, haha, and we watched eachother for a couple minutes and then he moved on. He was only about 1 footlong from head to tail but scared thebajesuses outtame when Isaw it it looked on my head comin for me, lol. WCL

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
By a woodpecker, it took me by suprise. Also had a tree branch that stemmed out from the tree next to mine and covered my face somewhat. A chipmunk walked all the way accross the branch and stopped in front of my face and staired straight at me with his beedy little eyes before he said "oh ****" and took off running and chirping, LOL

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
A hawk landed in a tree about 10 yards away, and let out on hell of a screech, and so did I.

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
I have had the pleasure on a day hunt, never been to this place before. First morning they took us out (in the dark) dropped us off and said your stand is that way ;)I got in the stand and was waiting on daylight when all of the sudden I started hearing this noise but I couldn't see nothing after about the tenth time it was light enough to see the big ol' owl...Kinda awkward for the first few minutes....

RE: Have you ever been swooped while bowhunting!
HAHAH...love this post...
One night I was looking at a coopers hawk acrossed an open hardwoods pirched in a tree at about 60 yards.... So funny Brian decides to play a game called "move your pinky".....WELL.....out of the tree he comes....wide open throttle.......stealth mode......at about 20 feet I throw up my arms and yell "get out of here!" and he veers off me......Not to bright.... Never saw a deer that night.......weird.... |
