scrapes

Seen something intersting and was hoping someone here can explain

I went to the land I hunt Saturday - to do some scouting and I noticed dozen of old scrapes, rubs, etc.

Something I have never seen and granted this is only my second year on this property but I found three scrapes that were still being used - fresh tracks, pawing, Etc

Why would this happen - I am thinking this is going to be a good spot to keep an eye on as well - but it is a mystery to me

Frank.....I read an article recent;y where they documented scrapes being used (documented with trail cam photos) all year long.

If I'm not mistaken....the licking branch was the main draw.

That would make sense all three of these had licking branches directly over head - was it primarily bucks in that article

You know, Frank....I don't remember....but I'll check it out, again. Off the top of my head....I don't think it was limited to bucks, only.

Hmm, guess I've never seen scrapes get hit this late in the year. Interesting! I wonder if it isn't these 1.5 year olds still smelling the piss in these scrapes and thinking stupid thoughts. It don't take much to excite these dumb little 1.5 year olds.

Schultzy,

I think it is a combination of the little horny toads and also the fact that this land is over 800 acres and only 3 does were taken last year

RE: scrapes

Both does and bucks will hit scrapes. Around here, scrapes that are located in major travel corridors or at the intersections of major trails will often be used all year. I don't know for certain why that is, but my guess is that since deer are territorial and have "home ranges" they are just leaving their scent much like a dog would. Testosterone levels in bucks is awfully low this time of year to expect them to be thinking about breeding.

You;d think, Schultzy....but there's some hogs on film on these scrapes!
