what about.........

Pin oaks as we call em down here, and red oaks?? Do deer really not like these and only eat them if there is nothing else?? I have never seen deer eating either. This is why I ask..

in wis the deer will always choose whites over reds but they do eat reds. we have burr oaks as well but the deer like the whites best. Have you ever tasted them? whites are less bitter

I think there is a chemical in them called tanic acid not for sure that is the name but that is what my mind is recalling right now.

Thats what happened to me. I just knew it must have been something I ate!
FYI I spit, I don't swallow lol

Thanks for pointing that out though. I didn't know that. I would hate for someone to get sick because of my ignorance.

No problem magicman.. I just wanted you to know. I've taken a bite out of a few too. Then I found out they were poisonous to us humans.. so I stopped Cold Turkey.

You're right, it is called tannic acid. The tannic acid in White Oak acorns make them much sweeter and as someone else less bitter than the others. In my area of Virginia we have reds and blacks too, and they hit on those but only after the White Oaks are completely gone.

It's a small town in Bath County. When most people think Bath County they think Homestead. Millboro is actually on the other side of that mountain. Its about 10 minutes from both Augusta and Rockbridge Counties, if you are familiar with those areas. A family who owns and hunts the property next to us acutally lives and hunts down in Pulaski too.

Dang its a small world! My parents, grandparents, cousins, and aunts and uncle are from Pulaski. I have been fishing on Claytor Lake since I was about 10 yrs old (30 yrs). Our house is directly next to Claytor Lake State park. Climbed Peak knob a hundred times. There are some BIG bucks around that area. I was actually planning on applying for a hunt in the state park this season. I remember days of sitting on the porch and counting dozens of deer. They would actually come into the yard and not get spooked or anything when I was 10 yrds away.

Talking about the country living! I can show you several moonshine stills on the lake...if they are still there!
