What is really the trophy?
The majority of people show off the antlers when they get a nice buck. The antlers are nice but seems to me like the real prize should be the fact that you outwitted or patterened a mature deer. An animal thattheir main job isto avoid danger. The accomplishment oftaking a deer that is 4.5 an up should be more gratifing than whether the deer has a PY or a BC rack.
Why do you think this is the case. |
RE: What is really the trophy?
Iam one of the few who beleaves anydeer taken with a bow is a trophy....except ones with spots then thats just plain wrong.

RE: What is really the trophy?
I agree with you 100%, when I first started bowhunting I considered everything I harvested to be a trophy. I still feel that way, but for some reson that massive rack of ANTLERS sure is a plus. On the ranch we hunt, we are under a pretty srtict management program that we dont shoot bucks that are not mature unless they are really under par (management deer) and we harvest a lot of does under this managementprogram and I consider all of them to be a trophy with my bow. I know a lot of people that won't even take a deer unless it scores x amount, I don't agree with that tactic as a whole, to manage your deer herd properly I feel you have to take several deer that won't make P&Y or B&C to get the full potential of your deer herd. Just my thoughts......

RE: What is really the trophy?
A 4.5 yr old deer is 4.5 whether he resided in MO or FL....and irregardless of whether he sported 150" or 100" of antler.

until the deer get birth certificates, they will be judged by their horns.Simply because five years down the line thats whats still hanging on the wall.[:-]

RE: What is really the trophy?
This photo below represents a real trophy to me. It was the specific doe that Matt (Rick James) wanted me to tag. She was a smart dominant doe and when Matt saw her, in an excited voice he said, that's her.....it was a great hunt.

RE: What is really the trophy?
Every deer that I take with my bow is a trophy, but thereismore of a label so to speak on a 160"5.5 year than a 115 class 5.5 year old. The antlers seem to be the prize instead of that fact that you have outwitted orhave been able to take a deer that is rarely seen in the woods regardless of the size of the antlers.

RE: What is really the trophy?
Yeah bud, she busted RJ twice, and he shot his blind once and man did she pay attention to that blind that has sat there for quite some time. RJ said that when he wasn't in it and was a camp and she'd come out (the blind empty) she'd pay attention, she usually came in down wind of the blind and nailed ya.
She followed her fawns in and busted us too but it was too late for her. ;) |

RE: What is really the trophy?
"TRUE" sportsman will always feel that ANY animal is a trophy when taken honestly, and by the rules of "Fair Chase". I believe as hunters we all go through "phases" in our pursuit of the game we seek. The first phase is as beginners when all we can think of is getting our first deer or whatever, then phase two kicks in and we seek out the mature animals with antlers or beautiful plumage, and lastly phasethree takes over when all we really desire ismore time spent outdoors, seeing game, &possibly take an animal to put meat in the freezer. I can't speak for anyone else, but I just cherish the time I spend in our great outdoors, and if I'm lucky enough to see the sights, and hear the sounds of "being out there" its fine by me to go home empty handed. You see, I don't HAVE TO harvest an animal to have had a successfull hunt, but if I do, and its a smaller doe, she is my Trophy, and I appreciate what she gave to and for me. Good Hunting ........ I couldn't agree more, I use to have sig that stated the difference between amature doe and a mature buck is that their are more doe's. *I think I got that right, brain fart time*

RE: What is really the trophy?
ORIGINAL: GregH The trophy is in the eye of the beholder. I've got to hunt a few other states, Texas / Alabama, and bye far FOR ME, it's been my kills in NH that has givin' me "MY" trophies. As I've done my hunting accomplishments myself and not with a paid hand. My biggest deer was from Texas, but not the same feelings for me. This past year's 2 1/2 year old basket racked 8 pointer with the .44 mag pistol has to be my highlight so far. I've gotten other deer, Does and Bucks both with firearm and archery in NH, but this has to be my best hunt to date. ![]() |
RE: What is really the trophy?
I would have to agree and say a matured deer that you have in your freezer. In my first bow hunting season last year I had a button buck in my sights at only about 10 yards away. I chose not to take the shot because it seemed too easy. It would've been my first deer but I feel better about not taking the shot. I caught heck for it at deer camp later and was told next that it would be if it's brown it's down. I said sure.
In my opinion it's got to be about the thrill of the hunt and getting in touch with your instincts. I plan to work my but off scouting for that big buck this year. Although, if it's a year and a half old spike it's down. lol. Hey, I need to get on the score board! |

RE: What is really the trophy?
ORIGINAL: GregH The trophy is in the eye of the beholder. This will forever be my number 1 trophy. Mainly because he was the first mautre buck I ever harvested. It took me 12 long hard years to get that first mature buck and I scouted the area where I took this buck very hard and passed on this buck the year before when he was 2.5 years old. Obviously he's not a record book buck, but he is the ultimate trophy for me. ![]() |
