100 g vs. 125 g broadheads?

Building new arrows with a higher FOC and plan to switch from 100 grain tips to 125, but alot of companies don't produce 125 grain heads. Rage is only offered in 100 and so are the new SlickTricks. I've heard some people just add the weights that go between the head and insert but dang, why no love for the 125 grain heads. Unless my memory is failing, I thoughtback in the90's 125 weremore common than 100's now it's the opposite. Did the need for speed drive the change? How many use 125 grain heads?

RE: 100 g vs. 125 g broadheads?

Everyone had to go lighter/faster. 125 gr became "overkill".

Honestly though IMO at almost all deer hunting ranges, it isn't going to make any real world difference which one you have on the end of your arrow.

RE: 100 g vs. 125 g broadheads?

Its all about speed today with these bow manufacturer's and with people in general.[:'(] I'll take more pack in my punch and shoot a heavier head any day of the week. I'm currently shooting 125 grain but I think I'll be moving to a 145 grain or better.

RE: 100 g vs. 125 g broadheads?

I also shoot 125 because of the punch I get out of them. Plus I have a lifetimes collection of 125 heads, so I wouldn't want them to go to waste.

And they are one serious head, especially for trad archers. I am a 125 guy too, more punch on the end of the arrow. Tough to both have excessive speed AND a good arrow weight, which IMO is what you should strive for with hunting arrows. 125 both gives you the FOC and a heavier arrow, two of my favorite things!

RE: 100 g vs. 125 g broadheads?

Honestly I use both 100 and 125 grain broadheads. It really depends on the arrow and where I need to go with the FOC. I prefer a minimum of 12% to 15% for broadheads, but I do have a set of FMJ's with Brass HIT inserts that have an FOC of over 20%. They pack a punch, fly nicely, and group very well.

Guess I'm old school...I started with 125 Satellites in the 70s, when I bought my first compound...Went to 125 Thunderheads sometimes in the 80s...I now use either 125 Muzzys or 125 Thunderheads, of course my bow was made in the early 90s, maybe that's why I haven't changed...:D

Now, I still shoot aluminum arrows and shoot fingers as well...I don't shoot over 25 yards...If a fellow wants more speed so he can shoot further than he might want a different set up...

I use 125's on almost everything now. Espicially hogs. NAP Spitfire Mechanicals are made in 125gr also 170gr.

When I take the bleeder out of the Muzzy then it weighs 200 grains (and is 2 blade too)and I hunted with some of those too. I also have some arrows with a 100 grain brass insert and use a 125 grain broadhead on that for 225 grains. Of course those arrows only leave the bow doing a screaming 233fps LOL. No excessive speed there :D;)

RE: 100 g vs. 125 g broadheads?

I've shot 125's for over 20yrs ... BUT, I'm going to switch to 100gr this year just to be able to expand my broadhead options. You're right, not many companies are making 125's any more.

I still shoot aluminums and will continue to do so. I'm going to go with 3" vanes to help keep the FOC up with the 100gr heads. We'll see how it works out. Come October I might be back to 4" feathers and 125's!

Are you talking about these http://www.3riversarchery.com/Product.asp?c=57&s=47&p=257&i=0255? I was thinking about trying some of the 50 grain inserts. Do they work well, arrow-flight wise?

Yes, those are what I use. I also have some of the 50grain inserts. What they do is increase your FOC and that can help your arrow, flight-wise but, with that said, if your bow and arrow are tuned and tuned together then you should have optimum flight regardless of the type of insert used. The increased FOC really helps the penetration, though, and that is my reason for using heavy inserts/broadheads/high FOC.

Shame on you Bruce!;)

I've never rifle hunted but I doubt a serious rifle hunter would use the same bullet for every game animal and/or area he encountered. I have arrows weighing from 326 grains to 500 grains, and FOC's running from 12.5% to over 20%. I try to pick my arrow depending on what I will hunt and where it will be hunted. I use a different arrow for open country Mule Deer in Oct. than I do Whitetail Bucks in the thicket in Nov. I wouldn't have to but I enjoy experimenting with different setups.

The one thing I do know is Light? Heavy? 12% FOC? 20% FOC? They all work!!;)

Something I have yet to play with is my 500 grain FMJ's with over 20% FOC coming out of my Airborne 82. Now that should pack a pretty good punch.

LOL Yeah, it won't weigh that much either LOL. I'll be shooting it around 53#'s and I will be setup to take 55 yd shots (for the groundhogs) too [:-]. Actually I'll be getting hold of you soon about the strings and some 100 grain slick tricks ;).

Now that would be a blast!! 50 yard shots at groundhogs! That ought to sharpen the skills a little bit. I wish we were closer. We'd have to pair up for some of that Action!!

wow, 200+ those are some biggens, I will be switching to 125's and staying there. Plus I will be going back to aluminum arrows as well. More punch instead of speed.
