What should I hunt.

For my 40th Birthday I am going to give myself a hunting trip. I would like to know what you guy's and gal's would do.
I've hunted Elk, Mule Deer andWhitetails.
40doesn't fall until 2009, I would really love to do a Dall sheep hunt but I think there is a waiting period ( for tags or Outfitters)

Caribou hunts are more affordable than moose hunts so i say take the moose hunt if you can swing it you may never get to again!!!

RE: What should I hunt.

I voted Caribou, because most hunts you can take two animals, and they look like pretty awesome hunts. I believe Moose tastes better though, and if that's your ultimate deciding factor, then I'd say moose, but my personal choice would be Caribou. For Challenge, the Blacktail may make for an excellent hunt, and you could do a blacktail hunt for about HALF or less of the money, and maybe make it a 10-14 day hunt, hunt twice as long, rather than a shorter hunt for a larger game at more money. WOW, decisions, decisions!!!! Elk is on my plate in 2009!!!!

definitly caribou. the meat is better in the later part of season but by then most are begining to lose their antlers. you would also need to decide what kind of caribou you wound want. woodland have bigger bodies, but barren ground have bigger racks. alot of outfitters also offer combo packages so all you need to do is buy the tag while your on your caribou hunt.

Alaska Moosage - Something new - right.
Although I just went to Texas for my 40th last year and had a blast.
I chose Texas for myself, because we have Moose in NH.
Not sure where your from, so if you don't have Moose, than Moose it is!

I voted moose. The sheep hunt sounds great, but I hope you are in good shape. Lots of hills to climb and thin air:D

I said Caribou simply because at this point in time I have zero interest in hunting moose. Caribou interest me much more. However, if you have a great interest in a moose hunt, that would probably be the way to go. Caribou hunts are easier to come by than moose hunts in AK.

Dan, if you've got a place to hangup the mount- I'd go with the moose hunt. But, if you don't have a gigantic room with cathedral ceilings, you'll have to retrofit your damn house just to hang up the head. LOL

I'd go for a snipe hunt. Cheap and very elusive, I'm in my early 30's and I've never seen one. [&:][8D]

I already did the tear out the ceiling bit for my Elk. I would more than likely hang it at my cabin.

You can hunt sheep in Canada without having to draw a tag I believe. However, moose would be my #1 anyway. There is something about having to shoot up at something that is appealing to me.

No matter what you hunt, best of luck!

I've never been to Alaska and hunting moose there would just be icing on the cake.

RE: What should I hunt.

Caribou is either feast or famine. If the migration timing is off you have to be satisfied spending your time fishing because the caribou will be miles away. I'd choose moose or caribou. I've seen both and moose in Ak didn't strike me as that big a challenge, but I haven't hunted either so I can't say for sure. Talk to people who have done both and see which style of hunting appeals to you more.

No legal waiting period in AK for Dall's tags. The only hold up would be if the guide you're using happens to be booked (and you do have to use a guide to hunt sheep, goats or brown bear in AK for nonresidents). Contact Tony Russ (current archery Dall's world record holder), he'll get you lined out. http://www.tonyruss.com/

If I had my choice I'd hunt mountain goats.

I'm going to bump this, because I just read it again.

A good outfitter will move you to a different LOCATION([:-]) if there are no 'bou in the area. They will fly you to another base camp where the migration is in swing.

I've been fortunate to have Elk, Various Deer, Caribou, Black Bears & more BUT never made the Moose. Now in my later yearsI wish I had went on a Newfoundland Moose & Caribou combo. Good luck in your decision.
