Found my buck....4 months later
 

Some of you may remember back during November I gutshot a nice buck. I exhausted myself for days and came up empty. I promised myself I would find him no matter how long it took. Well, four months later I found my buck.:)

I've been going "shed hunting" for the past couple months but in all reality I have been going to look for my buck. Today was my lucky day after countless hours of searching. I think I was more excited today than I would have been if I found him four months ago. The feeling was out of this world.

I've had bad dreams and even lost interest in shooting my bow because of this past season and the bad shot on this guy. I had a horrible season; not only because of this incident. This is one step in the right direction. I hate that I did not find him back in November but I do thank God that I did find him.

Heres some pics. I'm undecided if I'm just going to do an euro-mount or find a cape and actually have this guy mounted.

Same question duc, at any time, how close were you to him? Had you looked in the vicinity of where he ended up? Tell us more on the story of the search. It very well may help someone in that situation.

Schultzy: He was around 350-400 yards from point of impact and about 250 yards from last blood.

I also found this guy a couple weeks ago while looking. Too bad I didn't get to him before the squirrels and mice did.

Nice one and sorry that it took 4 months to find but glad to see you found it. That is one thing that I like in MI where I hunt now instead of PA, I am hunting patches of wooded areas.After time, I can catch up to them if the shot wasn't the best. In PA, it is a different story. The woods go on and on and don't end and if you lose the blood, you're done at least in the areas that I hunt in MI and PA.

He was about 250 yards away from last blood. At any one time? Probably 50 yards. The woods I shot him in has a field adjacent to it. He crossed the field (about 100 yards) and bedded down in a thicket 50 yards from the field edge. Back in November I walked the entire field edge looking for sign, never found any though. I had been searching for about one hour when I found him today.

well done buddy, persistance paid off for you. Another thing that you can take from this... is that deer went to a bedding area he was comfortable with. There's a very good chance that he's not the only deer that beds in that area.

Greg took the words out of my mouth.. bet it feels good to get some "closure".. ive been in that situation before, I remember how sick I felt after losing him and to finally find him really help if nothing else to learn from it all and move forward..

Sure glad you found him. I had the same problem hit a nice on in the shoulder and never found him and still no luck.

Thanks again guys!:) I'm still thinking about finding a cape and having him mounted. It just feels odd because it wouldn't be his cape. However, I did tell myself I would do the above if I ever did find him.

Congrats man, I know how you feel i had a similiar thing happen my buck jumped up a ran when I was approaching, I found him 8 weeks later and the yippers had picked him clean but the feeling of grabbing the bone after all that searching was as good as the day he came strolling in.

Congrats on finding the antlers but I've got to have the dissenting opinion on mounting him. I couldn't display him proudly knowing that I had let him down like that. It would just be a nagging reminder of my failure. Not sure that I'd have even kept the rack except as a reminder not to do it again, but I hardly need a physical reminder of those screw ups, they stick in the craw pretty hard as it is. (and don't anyone go thinking that I'm passing any kind of judgements here, I'm not. Been there myself and I've just got a different view on it.)
