Exercises for bowhunting
I am interested in hearing what everyone does for exercises to get ready for bow season.

RE: Exercises for bowhunting
I did 3mi. on the treadmill this morning. I do a five min. warm up walk in which I do "can" exercises (3lb.hand weights)to strengthen my small shoulder muscles. Probably helps my balance, too....doing these while I am walking.
I'll do this 4-5 times a week. |

I use the therapy bands from Walmart and the kit has one that is perfect for practicing
a Pull. The kit comes with instructions for exercises. I am down 26 lbs since Jan 3rd btw. Working out at the health club also, its all about calories. Good Luck. |

Other than lifting weights to keep your muscles in shape.....I think cardio is the key. That and just plain old shooting.

RE: Exercises for bowhunting
Right now I am running 2.5mi Mon/Wed/Fri outside with hills. (Started sprinting the hills which SUCKS!:D)
Then strength training Tues, Thursday for about 45 minutes.(push-ups, pull ups, curls, dips, abs, heavy bag etc etc) I take off the weekends but keep a pretty strict diet. Start over on Monday. The Mountain Bike is getting an overhaul as well to start hitting the trails on some weekends with a little less impact on the knees. Can't wait to start some swimming too! Yeehaw! Cannonball!![8D] |

RE: Exercises for bowhunting
Since I have two small kids that keep me busy, I try to run around with them at the playground, while occasionally doing sets of pull-ups and dips. I just basically act like a kid myself and it seems to be helping because I am in better shape recently..I also keep two 25 lb dumbells right by my night stand, so I can just grab them and workout when I have the time/energy. Sounds funny, but with my work schedule and my kids, I have to squeeze 3-4 small workouts in each week for a couple hundred reps of shoulder presses, lunges, etc.

12 oz. curls. lol I'm a carpenter so I get all the exersize I can handle. Nearer to season I do a little running.

RE: Exercises for bowhunting
I don't do anythin specifically for hunting / shooting, but I do have an excercise regime for playing golf. I find it works many of the same muscles used in drawing the bow. Once the snow melts out here in Colorado, I climb mountains which gives me all the cardio I need.

RE: Exercises for bowhunting
As a police officer I work out regularly but when the spring comes I crank the draw weight off my bow and just shoot a ton of arrows at a big target without attempting to work marksmanship. As time goes by I start to crank the weight up and continue to do the same until I get back to my original weight then work marksmanship. If you have a climber as I do I put it on and walk about the property or I put on my backpack with a small load in it to simulate the weight you will be carrying around. This works your legs, and gives your heart a workout as well!
And gzg38b... you have me laughing my butt off over your comment! |

RE: Exercises for bowhunting
I try to lift weights at least 3 or 4 days a week and run 5K at least 3 times a week. Trying to do that doesn't mean that it gets done every week!:D
