hunting whitetail by the moon
OK guys/ I met a guy down at the coast this past duck season that talked about hunting by the moon. I thought the guy was full of crap till I walked in his house. He has some bulls on the wall and I don' t mean just two or three. The area he hunts is not loaded with lots of big deer. Most of the locals down there say all the big deer have been gone for years. This guy showed me what he killed this year and again they were bulls.
He told me that using the moon phase he knows where to hunt (food plots\woods) so he has no wasted time in the woods. I don' t have alot of time to scout like i should after the season starts and thought this might be of some help.[ Now for my question does anyone know where to get any info on this or the name of any books. Moon Phase Whitetail Hunting by Jeff Murray
I hunt when and as often as I can, and thats alot, but I do beleive in the activity inspired by the moon. I have followed it and documented deer (unpressured deer) following feeding patterns that will justify the books statements. Try this link to Amazon.com to the book http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...202675-6044007 I would also strongly suggest Hunting Whitetails by the Moon by Charles J. Alsheimer too. |
RE: hunting whitetail by the moon
I hunt whenever I can, I sure am not going to hunt because the book says the moon is bad. Never took much creed in it, my high pressured deer don' t move period - moon or not.

RE: hunting whitetail by the moon
Spend every minute you can in the woods year round, thats the " secret" to big bucks. :D

RE: hunting whitetail by the moon
There is no doubt in my mind that the moon does have an effect on deer movement, if you have limited time to hunt I would stick to hunting the new moon, but I hunt at least 60-80 days a season as a result I pay little attention to the moon phase, the longer you are out there the better your chances. During the rut all bets are off, the moon doesn' t mean diddly squat!

Thanks to you guys that have replyed. I have talked to old man (90) and he told me if I would look in some of the hunting books that have been out for more that 40 years I would find alot more info on the magnetic pull of the moon and how it effects wildlife.
I know that spending all my spare time in the woods is something that always helps but thats not always possable. Thanks Boldplate " hit em like a ten pound hammer with a ten foot swing" |
RE: hunting whitetail by the moon
I hunt as often as I can and noticed in my log that I seldom see deer when the moon is full. The darker the nights the better the days

RE: hunting whitetail by the moon
Of course he' s using the moon phase. That' s techno babble for poaching at night...lol. Just kidding. Moon directly overhead or underneath. i think putting this together with Sun data is better in form of solunar tables.

RE: hunting whitetail by the moon
In a PERFECT world with PERFECT weather and no hunters in the woods it probably could be used. HOWEVER, pressure, weather fronts, etc all effect it. It' s not a given. You don' t get big bucks without having them in the woods. IF they' re in the woods they eat several times in a 24 hour period no matter what. They need fuel. I hunt when ever I can pretty much. The deer are always there. I' m not about to become dependant on the MOON and restrict my hunting to a week a month, because that' s what you' re talking about. A hurricane or the first bad snow will throw your moon deal right out the window. So will hunters walking through your woods the day before you plan to hunt. They may tend to move later or earlier, but there' s only so much daylight to hunt. Change stands daily and don' t come back to one for a week or two and you won' t have any problems. You do your home work and set your stands accordingly, you' ll have your deer before the moon worshippers get in a tree waiting for THE MOON. It' s mostly hype to sell you a moon chart for $25.
