Hey New Mexico hunters
 

Looking for some bowhunters in the Albuquerque area and some 3D shooters to meet. I am getting ready to apply for tags on line as soon as my 90 day residency requirement is up in a week and so many choices of species I am a little overwhelmed as what to apply for and where; so any advice would be appreciated.I came from IA and there were two choices; deer and turkey. I now have elk, oryx, ibex, 3 species of deer, bighorn sheep, barbary sheep, antelope, bear, cougar, and javelina. The damn weather is perfect, no coat weather everyday, the sun always shines, it is a cheap cost of living, and the economy is strong here. The state has 9 million acres of National Park land and 13 million acres of BLM land, all of which most of it can be hunted. I am waiting for something to happen as this is too much like paradise.

I'm not from New Mexico, but just got back from spending 2 months out there trapping cats, weather was good, most of the time, seen tons of elk and deer and oryx..I like it out there, how is living there so far???

Like I said, waiting for the bubble to burst, can't find anything wrong with the state. We love it here.Any tips on where you would go for the deer and elk?

spent the first 2 weeks southwest of Quemado, lots of elk and deer there in the forest southwest of town, but seen alot by Socorro also..

I want to come out there a oryx hunt, but I think non-residents can only hunt in white sands and it is a rifle hunt, really want to bowhunt..I trap a ranch with alot of oryx on it, seen them everyday..COOL animal..

Last I heard getting tags was the toughest part of the whole process.
I have a brother and sis-in-law that live just south of Albuquerque and they have both hunted the Oryx on the White Sands Missle range. The meat from the oryx is top of the line. I'd highly suggest checking into hunting them for sure. They also make a wonderful wall mounted trophy!
I did work on the missle range several years ago and saw oryx on a regular basis. I very cool looking critter. Although, it does sound like they can actually be a little aggressive sometimes, just adds to the thrill of the hunt!
Hope the summer temps. aren't as bad as I think they are. The CO. snow fall might start looking not so bad andeven Iowa might start looking good again!;)

I believe that oryx are once in a lifetime draws except for inferior horn types???? My brother in law and sister have lived here in our town for 12 years and they say the hottest it gets here is 100 degrees. They said it is still better than IA at 85 degreewith all of their humidity. We will never miss the midwest and are glad to be out. I'm just irritated that my damn forefathers couldn't have setted out west instead of IA, and that I stayed there too long. We get snow here and get four seasons; just a lot milder. Ia has had below 0 windchills lately and it is 50-60 here everyday and the sun always shines. It never shines in IA. We liked our 4 month stay in CO but the resort town living in Steamboat Springs was a welcome departure. NM is perfect from what we see. Life is an adventure; who knows.

I looked at the nm dnr site. It looks like getting tags could be tough. what have you heard? ( for any game )
