How tight is tight?
I was just curious how tight of groups others are shooting. I am always trying to get better and I don't do much target practice with other people (my wife goes once in a while) so I was wondering how tight of groups you all shoot at 20, 30, 40 , and 50 yards.
For me I am at 2" groups at 20 and 30 yards with my new Hoyt Vulcan. At 40 yards it opens up to about 6" groups on a good day and 50 yards is a 8" pie plate. |
RE: How tight is tight?
Tight to me is .75"-1" groups at 20. That is what I am trying to do.

RE: How tight is tight?
how many arrows are we talking about?
|
RE: How tight is tight?
I was wondering when I saw the subject line[8D]
Oddly, I shoot more consistantly, proportionally, at 40 and beyond than at 20. Its a concentation thing I know but I have been unable to cure it so far. On a good day;) (most days, when I dont have anything else on my mind) at 80 yards I can generally keep every arrow within a 6" circle...sometimes less. That would mean I hit less than a 2" circle every time(key) at 20 yards, yea right. |
RE: How tight is tight?
Most good shooters, shoot a 5 spot so they don't ruin their own arrows.
|
RE: How tight is tight?
I would say at 20 yards i'm at 2 to 3 ". At 30 yards it's 3" to 4.5". Not the greatest but good enough to kill a deer.

RE: How tight is tight?
I have to agree with LostinWoods. I don't shoot as much as I used to. I used to have a range in the back yard at my old house that I could shoot 50 yds. I shot every day, sometimes twice a day. On a good day I could group 5 arrows in 3" at 50 yds. At 20 yds I had to shoot 5 spots because otherwise I would either have to replace nocks or ruin too many arrows by deforming the nock tapers. It ain't bragging, it was just a fact. I am not nearly as good now simply because I don't practice enough and I'm not as strong as I used to be either. And I am sure anyone with good form and hand/eye coordination and sufficient practice could do the same thing.

RE: How tight is tight?
I shoot a very tight 1 arrow group at all distances! I'm talking like a 3/8" group or less!
|
RE: How tight is tight?
I always thought it was an 1" per 10yds.
|
RE: How tight is tight?
I really try not to shoot groups. Not because I'm sooo good I would be breaking nocks and ripping fletching, but because there's always the CHANCE when you're shooting groups at the same spot. I'm shootin ACCs, so it can get pretty expensive if I ruin a few. That being said, I suppose right now between 2"-3" at 20 yds for three shot groups average. Sometimes I really get them in there .75" or so, and other times I get a crazy flyer out there way away from the group[&:] My issue as you can see is more or less consistancy rather than accuracy....or are they one in the same;)

RE: How tight is tight?
Well I can shoot the eye out of a blackbird at 80 paces. And that's a fact becauseI'm on the internet. :D
In all honesty, if I can consistantly group four inches at 20 yards, I'm doing good. ;) 25 yards group: ![]() |
RE: How tight is tight?
I notice I tend to shoot tighter groups out past 20yds, 20 is pretty tight, 30 is less, but 40/50 esp 50 gets tighter, I think its due to increased concentration. I shot some 2" groups at 50. As long as I'm going to hit the vitals at a relative distance, I really don't care how tight the groups are. If im shooting 9" groups at 50 I may rethink that 60 or 70yd shot, but good groups to me is would you have killed the animal? and not probably killed.....heart/double lung vitals.

RE: How tight is tight?
I generally strive for 1" per 10yds or better (2" at 20yds, 3" at 30yds, etc). Some days it can be 1" at 20 and 30, 2" at 40. Other days its 3" at 20 and gets worse from there! I wish I had the time to practice like I had 20yrs ago. Its just not in the cards these days. "Minute of deer" will have to do!
... Shockwave |
RE: How tight is tight?
I have gotten a little better in the past few months -mostly due to better arrows and better bow tuning. Under 2" at 20 yards is pretty much the norm. I also seem to almost shoot better at distance. Maybe it's a concentration thing - or maybe you follow through better while the arrow is in flight longer.

RE: How tight is tight?
On a good day at 30yrds, I am grouping within a 2 inch circle. I will try and get that at 40 yrds before this bow season. I think I can do that.

RE: How tight is tight?
Just a little perspective about this....
The 9 ring on a Vegas target is 3 inches. Somebody who shoots 3" groups at 20 yards could easily put 2/3 oftheir arrows in the 10 ring (1.5 inches) and 1/3 oftheir arrows in the 9 ring (3 inches). That would equate to a score of 435 on a 450 Vegas round. That's pretty damn good. If you averaged 435, you would have been in the Top 5 of the HNI Indoor League this yearout of 20 people. Remember, that's shooting THREE inch groups at twenty yards. Here's the GOOD PART: Most of the people on this thread say they shoot TWO inch groups at twenty yards. So it stands to reason that most of the people on this thread could EASILY shoot in the 440's on a Vegas 450 round (and do it with BOWHUNTING setups - even more impressive). So, to all you guys who say you shoot 2" groups at 20 yards, grab a Vegas Target and post your scores! You should DOMINATE our league and give Buckeye a run for the top spot, if you can really do what you SAY you do..... ;) By the way, the AVERAGE score for our HNI league for all people across all weeks is around 420. That's a little worse than 3" groups at 20 yards. |
RE: How tight is tight?
I wonder how much these groups change with broadheads????
|
RE: How tight is tight?
It's not the group size that wins these leagues, its the distance estimation. A 3" group that is 7" above the10 ringdoesn't score very well . . . .

RE: How tight is tight?
Anyone else NOT shoot groups at 20 yards? I don't mind fletching arrows, but I like to preserve them as well as I can.

RE: How tight is tight?
many years ago Id be happy hitting a soccer ball at 20 yards. Then it became a 4x6 index card at 20 yards. Last week my first robin hood at 30 yards shooting 2 arrows groups. My grouping and archery skills are now where Im shootong at different spots from 30 yards or less. This forum and everyone on here has helped me so much.;)

RE: How tight is tight?
2-3" @ 20
2-4" @ 30 3-5" @ 40 Plus a lot of fletchings and the occasional 6-8" oops! |
RE: How tight is tight?
I stopped grouping arrows a long time a go...If I go out and take a shot on my 3-D's and get a heart/lung shot on 1st arrow I leave it at that and when I practice useing the Morrell super duper 16 spot bag thats what I do...One arrow at each spot at differant yardages, same with the Block target...
I do however sight in new sightsat 20-30-40-50 and now 60yrds but Iam re thinking that as to going 15-25-35-45-55yrds then I will try and get good groups then after that its back to one shot one spot at unknow yrds...After all its that 1st arrow that counts in hunting.....But if I shot IBO or something then I would be a tight group getter..... |
RE: How tight is tight?
In addition to what gzg38b said, are we talking CONSISTANT groups, or what you can do every now and then? I know I can't put up 2" 20 yard groups every single time.

RE: How tight is tight?
Left handed with sights (20yds = 2") (30yds = 3") (40yds = 4 or 5")
Right Handed with no sights ( 20yds = 4") (40yds = 6 to 8") |
