Goodness, how can you forget the ones who started it all.

Dr. Saxton Pope and Arthur Young

BC, I agree up to a point and that is only because Young and Pope learned their skills from another fellow. And that fellow is none other than Ishi! Ifit were not for Ishibow hunting as we know ittoday would befar different. Ishi is one awesome dude, a Native Indian from northern Californiawho was well skilled in the ways of his forefathersbeing fromthe Yahi tribe. Iwould be willing to bet everything I own that if Ishi were alive today that he could out hunt the best of us including fellows like Chuck Adams who by theway always has a guide by hisside.

Here are a couple of very inforative links that explain further who Ishi was.

While all of the afformentioned people brought something great to the fraternity of bowhunting, I will toss in (and I'm not trying to be controversial here.... just pointing out another "beginning of bowhunting") that Biblically bowhunting has been around longer than any of these folks. Our history is greater than we realize.

I read about him some years ago in trad hunter mag, or primitive hunter. Thank goodness the two didn't adopt his unorthadox release style.

In my opinion some of the names you put up shouldn't even be mentioned in the same thread with Fred Bear, Chuck Adams, and Howard Hill. Rather than include showmanship type guys like Ted, Fitzgerald, Foulkrod etc... you could have added Jim Dougherty and Dwight Shua. To be honest I think the greatest bowhunter of this gang is Chuck but to give them Legendary status you'd have to narrow your list to 2 people.... Howard Hill or Fred Bear. Chuck will be on that list when he's a little older. LOL Chucks problem is that he doesn't have the PR these others do.

So far I am the only one who voted for Howard Hill. My reason being, even though he was not as big as Fred while I was growing up he is the reason I became interested in archery hunting. I saw Robin Hood with Errol Flynn when I was a kid & asked my dad who the guy was making all those cool shots with a bow. He explained to me the it was Howard & not Mr. Flynn making those awesome shots. That next Christmas my dad got me the biography of Howard Hill & the rest is history. So I say thanks Dad & thanks to Howard Hill!
