Most rifles have ranges of 150 - 300 yards. A crossbow has an effective range of under 50 yards. How do you figure its a "rifle"? Have you ever shot a crossbow? How did it do at 200 yards?

Yea i have a horton crossbow. Still shoot it from time to time, but its just not the same as shooting a compound. I didnt mean the range aspect of it being a rifle i ment the fact that you have to shoulder it and shoot it the same way as a gun. Im not trying to get on people that shoot crossbows by any means.

I think considering a crossbow a "rifle that shoots bolts" is a stretch.

It has the same effective range and a bow, propels the same projectile (only shorter) as a bow and uses the exact same propulsion system (energy stored in limbs and projectile propelled by a string) as a bow.

It's pretty much a bow with the difference being it will stay at full draw by itself and it's shoulder mounted.

I hope not, although it has been a while since one of these popped up. In case people havent realised, the instrument in question happens to be called a crossbow, not a rifle...or a bow.

News flash they shoot arrows. But call em what you want...bolts are short(under 15")and normaly didnt have fletching.midevel times....and yes I shoot crossbow's and compounds and trad bows.......
I will take a vert bow over a crossbow 70% of the time...plus Iam more accurate with my vert then the crossbow......free hand anyway.....crossbows are heavy and bulky, you have to make sure the limbs wont hit anything when you shoot, they are not fun to stalk with due to the weightand it takes longer to re-arrow a cb then a vert.....Plus there loud when shot.......

all bows have there +'s and -'s it up to a person to decide what they want to shoot....Just wait till something happens and you cant draw a bow anymore....the CB will be your best friend if you still want to bow hunt.....

To each there own...;):D

Effective range of a crossbow is still fairly limited. No comparison to a rifle, not even close.

musclecarman, your poll should ask, How is a Crossbow shot!

A. Like a bow
B. Like a Rifle

That says it all!

That's like asking if a horse is a dog or a cat. It's a crossbow, that's why it's not called a rifle or a bow.

It's definitely a bow.

It's a cross"bow".... the "cross" is only there because the bow partis horizontal. I just had shoulder surgery in October and bought a TenPoint Pro-slider to hunt with last season. I hunted with it for two months. Let me tell you what I learned... if you haven't actually used a crossbow, the ONLY, and I mean O N L Yadvantage is that you don't have to draw.
- It's heavy and cumbersome.
- Even sighted in, it'smore difficultto hit accurately with than a compound (IN MY EXPERIENCE).
- The accurate range of a compound is equal to or greater than a crossbow.
- It's much easier to grab your bow off a bow-hanger than it is to get a crossbow off a bow-hanger. The other option is to sit and cradle what feels like a boat anchor for hours on end.
- There won't be any possible second shot opportunity after you fire a crossbow, and not just because you have to cock it. Anything within a quarter mile will hear a crossbow fire.
- Think it's tough to walk through the woods with a compound? Try a crossbow.

So, I worked my butt off in physical therapy and was shooting my Drenalin again before the season was out. I sold the crossbow to my brother who was looking for one. To all the crossbow hunters out there... my hat's off to ya.[8D]
