Me and this guy were having a conversation about fishing, hes a big fisherman and shark fishes and all things like that, one thing lead to another and i started talking about hunting, he went on to tell me how wrong hunting is and its so unfair to kill a harmless deer, and how there so easy to kill...I meet so many people who are so against hunting yet they fish, and thats perfectly ok because fish arent cute and furry.
Ya because reeling a fish in by the mouth, and throwing him on ice to slowly die is alot more humane.

I think theres so many people that are like this, fishing is something that alot more girls do and little kids and almost no one is against, but than hunting... which is a million times harder and you only take maybe 1 or 2 deer a year is hated on so much more by the people that kill maybe 30 fish in a day.

Too many Americans like this are making my head hurt. Being Politically Correct is cool and the "in" thing. Independent thought and rationalization have flown out the window for much of the US. Food comes from Grocery stores and no animals are ever harmed either.

Some people seriously need a reality check.

i even know someone who wont kill a spider in his own house, yet he striped bass fishes all the time (and keeps them) but he wont kill a deer or a shark because he says there like dogs to him, he just cant kill them :)

I dont want to be the devils advocate but fish do not have the brain capacity to feel pain from hooks. I dont know about letting them slowly die, if they can feel suffering though.

I posted this last year it was a venting paper i wrote and sent to everyone i knew that and tod them to send it to everyone they knew:

I never had to worry about finding a place to hunt until I strayed off the family farm and started going to school in Michigan. When I got here I was thinking "ok no big deal go get some permission slips and its game on". Wow did I get a slap in the face when the first door slammed in it. How could someone not want to be a steward of the land that they own and manage the local deer herd? But I was determined to find a place to hunt. So I continued on and the more and more I got turned down the more and more I wanted to know why these people wouldn't let me hunt? So one day after getting turned down once again, I asked the man what he had against hunting? He looked at me kind of funny and thought a moment then replied "nothin’ I guess, just don't want you to hunt". Well after pondering this for a while and making sure I didn't smell bad or look crazy, I came to the conclusion that most people really don't have a good reason to with hold permission to hunt from a well dressed, well spoken, polite individual. Its not that they have anything against hunting, they just don't want you to hunt. I approached another land owner one day while she was planting a tree. I said "hello" and "that’s a good lookin' oak tree your plantin' mam" in what I'm told up here is a southern draw. She replied "Yes it is, if the deer don't kill it first, what can I do for ya"? Seizing the opportunity I said "well I was going to ask you if you would allow me to slow your deer damage down a bit through some selective bow hunting"? She gave me a long look and said " You mean kill them"? I said "not all of them just a couple" she replied "I hate the damn things sometimes but I don't want them killed"! Again I was left floored! How could some one that has to replace trees because of the damage the deer are causing not want them to be thinned out a little bit. Now we aren't talking about eradication we are talking about managing the influx in the deer population. But no matter how you try to explain it to some people the answer is still no. Its people like this that have put the thought in the minds of so many people that steaks grow on the shelves of grocery stores and that not eating meat at all is a normal human diet. Newsflash: They don't call us omnivores for nothing! Once again I was beaten by the stupidity called mainstream America! All in all I did find two farms to hunt on this past season, but it would have been nice to have permission on a 1/15 of the other fifty that I asked.
But my message is this that we as HUNTER'S, not bow hunter's, not gun hunter's, HUNTER'S as a whole must work together to educate the public on what it is that we do.

Well, I'm a bass fishing fanatic, a long time gun hunter and now a bonafide bow hunting nut. I'll hunt just about anything that's fair game on one condition... I eat what I kill. I don't kill just for thefun or the thrillof it. I've been known to catch a spider and let it go outside. If I find a snake in my yard, I don't automatically think KILL!!!. I catch it and take it to the woods and release it. There's nothing contradictory about being a hunter and a fisherman and still respecting life. Try convincing most "tree huggers" of that, though. By the way, most bass fishermen now have livewells, not ice buckets.

charismatic megafauna ruins alot of people...they rather have a black bear protected, though theres piles of them in the particular state, but could give 2 piles less about a highly threatened snake or something that isnt "cute n cuddly" looking...big problem for managers because the ugly critters get no love, and in turn, no funding....

The next time you see him ask how his last ribeye tasted, then ask if he had to loosen his leather belt after eating it. There's nothing inherently "right" or "wrong" with either hunting or fishing, it's his perception of both that's wrong.

Well when you see him let him know I don't particularly care for people that fish for sharks.

At least when we hunt we identify our target and cleanly kill it, or at least make our best effort to. Fishing is sort of a crap shoot.

Besides fishing seems a bit more cruel than hunting deer to me. I still do it though to be honest. And I'm the worst because I catch and release. How mean is that when you think about it.

As far as fish not feeling pain, well I'm not a fish so its pretty hard to say. And until one can talk to us it is just a theory. I was always under the impression that they didn't have any nerve endings in the lip area, not that they couldn't feel pain at all. I know that when my fish in my fish tank nip at each other one takes off, they don't just sit there and take it. So they must register something.

There is a lot we don't know, for all we know plants feel pain. Just because they can't express it or we don't know how to verify it doesn't meant it isn't so.

I'll tell you what though, if they ever discover that they can I'm not going to quit eating corn and taters (only vegetables I really like).

Next time tell him that he is a hunter, he is just hunting fish.

As for live wells, I think that the bass touneys have about ruined the enjoyment of bass fishing. When my boy and I fish a pond, we keep a few 3/4 to 1 pound bass and release the larger and smaller ones. We also keep the bluegills that are large enough. I think this approach keeps a pond in balance. A pond needs the larger fish. Bass is about my favorite fish to EAT.

I EAT trout too, but I quit fishing at one or two, I don't clean a place out. I don't have many released fish die either because I don't generally release trout. (I obey the law though and avoid catch and release fisheries.) I kind of see that as torturing fish for enjoyment instead of harvesting food.

This isa very deep philosophical subject that can't be discussed in terms of rationalizations about feeling pain, stewardship, resource management etc. The bald face reality of the matter is that there are a small percentage of people in our modern day society that still have a strong predatory nature working in their lives. Some of which have been able to release this compelling urge through hunting. The others are still looking for their place to be predatory. The vast majority of people in our society are not living by natural law (urbanized) and have lost their predatory nature. They have become extremely passive and that's why fishing, bird hunting and the like are more acceptable forms of being a sportsman in the outdoors. Also, remember when we kill another warm blooded big game animal ( like ourselves) our spirits have soared beyond the mundacity of ordinary modern day behavior.

LOL, I like that! A female friend of mine was ribbing on me about killing bambi and I thought it was really funny. Come to find out she's getting into hunting because of her dad. Heck, now I want to take her hunting!

I beg to differ on that one. Try fishing for King Mackeral sometime. I've had Kings swim around with menhaden...or bunker/pogies according to what part of the east coast you're on....in their mouths just like any other feeding fish until the drag hits. Once they get two razor sharp treble hooks poked into the roof of their mouth, they are off to the races. Likewise, I've seen Bluefish bite a live bait in half and release it when they felt the treble in their mouth. Blues will leave you with a tail hanging on one treble and a head on the other. Fish feel pain and are intelligent, just ask any mackeral fisherman who's watched a king or spanish swim around his bait because his leader or hooks are too big.

And yes, I fish and hunt. The fishermen I don't like are those who beat small sharks to kill them or toss rays or skates on the deck to die, rather than throw them back. I don't fish for anything I don't eat and I don't hunt for anything I don't eat. If I don't intend to eat it, I either leave it alone to begin with or put it back with as little stress as possible.

And add those who throw cigarette butts and garbage in the ocean. I don't empty my trash in your refrigerator, please don't toss your trash into mine.

This is true. It's very simple, if you are an animal and your eyes are located on the sides of your head you are "Prey" and if they are in the front of your head you are a "Predator", we are predators so don't fight it.

People are so ill informed about hunting, I consistently talk to non hunters about the application process, and they're like what? they have no clue that you can't just go into the woods anywhere, anytime of year and shoot as many deer as you want etc.... No wonder alot of non-hunters have a problem with it, I think once they come to learn we're actually managing populations of game vs. just killing them into extinction they'd be more apt to come around to the idea of hunting. I would think common sense would be that you can't just shoot any animal anytime anywhere, but then again, I guess common sense isn't common enough?

We should do everything we can to introduce people(urban) to the natural (off the pavement) world. Hopefully, by doing so they too can restore their lost predatory nature and join our ranks of passionate hunters.
