My guess is that a mature whitetail will smell the tobacco, regardless of flavor. I chewed quite a bit when I first started hunting, to relax me and calm the nerves but I quit for fear of spooking deer.
Just my opinion though.

Out of 70 some whitetails that I have taken, about 70 some were with a dip in my mouth. I don't know if bothers them or not, but if I can't dip in the woods, I can't hunt.

I dip Copenhagen and havn't noticed it bothering them. I once had a doe smell and eat my old dip under my stands. I'm sure that they smell it, I'm just not convinced that they associate it with danger!

I agree with Strutnbuck.

RE: Dipping while hunting

I have been dipping for 20+ years and have always dipped while on stand. However, this year I had two deer bust me and I am sure it was the dip. Both were does, one young one. She came in on a trail that 4 others had came in on earlier and passed by without any worries. I put a dip in, 10 mins later she came by and at 25 yards looked right at me and turn and left the area. The wind was in their favor, so maybe she just picked up a little human scent, but my gut tells me that my Kodiak sold me out. Since then, no dip for me until I am back at the truck.

For me it's part of the outdoor expirience. I enjoy my Cope.. I've never seen a bad reaction based on spit. Heck it's now widely accepted to P from the stand. If I feel I'm really in a core area and want to take every precaution. I'll put some scent killer in a bottle and spit in it.

Guys at our camp dip apple and berry ( which I can't handle) ....but they both swear that they have had deer come in to check it out and licking it up. I have never noticed it being a problem, shot plenty of deer with kodiak spit all over my stand and the ground. Pretty sure that my stinky breath will overpower the dip smell, lol

I think it truly depends on your other levels of scent control. I have no doubt that they will smell it. Maybe even key to your location from it, but if they have no other scent to alert them, they will most likely dismiss it. I don't think you will see this with more mature deer. They will alert on most any "unnartural" scent.

I think Skoal just came out with a new flavor called "Doe Drip". Try that.

I quit last year, and went thru my first season without a copenhagen dip. And I can say, I saw more deer, spooked a whole lot less deer. Bottom line, anything you can do to make yourself invisible, the better. I know a bunch on here doesn't like to hear this, but you can't argue with it.

I've shot deer with and without a dip in. If your really worried just brush your teeth like your suppose to before you go out into the woods and toss one in then use a spitter.

I dip and spit on the ground. Never an adverse effect. But I have had some younger deer come to the area I spit in to investigate. Directly below me.

The only times that I know I was busted while chewing, was the movement involved. I usually take a bottle if I chew, but have been known to spit on the ground too.

never had deer (I see) react any different? Now there could be some I don't see because I chew on stand, who knows. I'm trying to quit anyway!

If I can't dip I won't hunt. I have killed several big bucks while dipping, I have the pics and mounts to prove it, with that said, I may also be spooking deer that I never see, oh well, I have beendipping 20 + years, I ain't quiting, I promise that....I may start spitting in a baba!!

I have never had a problem with deer smelling it but I did spook a coyote that took a wiff of the area i was spitting. If your going for a Trophy its not worth it.

RE: Dipping while hunting

About the only time I chew tobacco is during hunting season...I don't do it alot because I don't want to get addicted to something that can make my mouth rot out, but I do occasionally chew some Levi Garret and have arrowed some deer with it in my mouth. Overall, I don't like to do it, but when I am tired and have been hunting all day, sometimes a nice chew will wake you up...just spit it into a bottle and close the top, no odor.

RE: Dipping while hunting

Been dipping the Kodiak for years while bear and deer hunting and elk hunting! Is it good to do while hunting, probably not, specially the stuff I chew, the stuff is stinky but good! I swallow the spit so that part don't hurt the hunting but the smell it puts out when I toss the dip on the ground probably doesn't help me. Oh well, I don't plan on quiting for that reason. I should quit for other reasons then that.
