VENANGO COUNTY "KILL FOR THRILL" VIOLATORS BROUGHT TO JUSTICE FRANKLIN - Pennsylvania Game Commission officials today announced that a year-long prosecution of a case of multiple deer killed in Mercer and Venango counties has come to an end. Four individuals who were juveniles at the time of their offenses were held accountable for their gross violations of the Game and Wildlife Code, which has been called a disturbing incident of "kill for thrill." Each of the four juveniles was charged with five counts of unlawful use of lights while hunting, four counts of unlawful taking or possession of game or wildlife, one count of loaded firearms in vehicles and one count of restrictions on recreational spotlighting. Two defendants, a 17-year-old female and a 17-year-old male, both from Utica, Veango County, were found guilty on Dec. 31, in a hearing held before Venango County District Judge David Fish, of Pleasantville. The 17-year-old male defendant was assessed a $4,800 fine, and the 17-year-old female defendant was assessed a $4,000 fine. In addition to the fines, the defendants are responsible for court costs and each face revocation of their hunting and furtaking privileges for up to 12 years. The other two defendants, a 17-year-old male, from Carlton, Mercer County, and a 16-year-old male, from Cochranton, Crawford County, pled guilty in October of 2007. District Judge Fish assessed the 16-year-old defendant to pay a $4,800 fine, and the 17-year-old to pay a $4,000 fine. In addition to the penalties, the defendants are responsible for court costs and each face revocation of the their hunting and furtaking privileges for up to 12 years. "This was one of the most disturbing cases that I have been involved with," said Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officer Clint Deniker, who serves western Venango County. "The four juveniles would spotlight deer with either a spotlight or the headlights from their vehicle. Upon finding deer in a field all four would exit the vehicle and shoot at the deer with .22 caliber rifles. The four would then drive to another field and repeat the process. There was no attempt to retrieve the deer. The subjects did not care if the deer were wounded or dead." Deniker noted that the break in the case came when he and Deputy WCOs Neal Britton and James McCurdy were working routine night patrol on Oct. 30, 2005, in Canal Township, Venango County. The suspect's vehicle was stopped for late spotlighting at 2 a.m. Upon approaching the driver, WCO Deniker noted that the driver's face was splattered with blood and there was a bloody knife on the floor of the van. The subsequent investigation revealed that the blood splatter came from the driver cutting the throat on a deer the four had wounded. The deer was then drug into the woods. "There is no telling how many deer were killed or wounded by the suspects," Deniker said. "They did not retrieve any of the deer they shot." A detailed investigation conducted by WCO Deniker and others resulted in retrieval of multiple dead deer in areas where the subjects had shot. |

RE: We need some names?
Wow, looks like they need to take a page from the Texas law books. They got off easy. I had a student that got caught poaching a deer at night. He's dad told me he couldnt get him out of jail because it was going to cost around 30,000 bucks. Dont know if he was elaborationg, or not. But I do know the state of Texas upped the anty a few years back.

ORIGINAL: GMMAT Just curious.....What would knowing their names help? Whatcha gonna do? They seem pretty short of anything along the lines of morality or responsibility, maybe a good job recommendation to help them pay of their debt to society. Just in general try to make better people out of them, show them love and understanding & most of all I wouldn'twant tobe in the way ofa stray bullet meant for some form of local vermin.;) |
RE: We need some names?
I've heard more about the thrill killers, a new bread of poacher, and personally sound tougher to catch, they don't want a head/rack/trophy. So shoot and drive away, but glad to hear about these guys being caught.
It's about time fines/punishments catch up to these guys, above was mentioned they lose their rights to hunt for 12 years, I wonder if any of them actually hunt? had a license etc...? little good suspending their hunting rights would do if they don't even hunt.I'm all for fines/jail time etc.... also I find it ironic that these low lives, will one day be able to hunt again, own a rifle etc....wonder what the charges/punishments would have been had they been adults? |
RE: We need some names?
You put yourselves in their parents' shoes, though, Jim.....and some unknown guy comes around to talk to your kids.
;) That's the only reason I asked. |
RE: We need some names?
PS- what do you need names for? What are you going to do once you get their names? I assume they were tech. juveniles, and we do have laws in this country, regardless of fair/dumb, and by the way once they become adults and if they do this again, guess what? their previous record won't be admissable/known once adults, so they can do this again when adults for the "first time" course now they'd be adults, not minors and face steeper punishment I'd assume.

RE: We need some names?
This is par for the course here in PA. My boss who is a part time DCO for Bucks co PA last week busted 10 hunters on the last day of late doe season. The 10 slob hunters posted 7 guys around a field and the other 3 walked thru a thicket. They pushed a herd of Bucks and Does and the slobs open up on the herd. The slobs droped 2 Bucks[:@] and 5 doe. [:@]Bucks were closed it was Doe only and most of the slobs had no Doe tags. This all happen on land that they had no permission to hunt on.[:@] You would not believe some of the stories he tells me about the slobs that hunt in my neck of the woods!! Some real A%^HOLES!!!! PA needs stiffer fines!!!!!

RE: We need some names?
Every time I read about poachers or law breakers in Pa I get POed because if the fines were stiffer and the punishment more harsh alot of this would stop. Not all, but alot.

RE: We need some names?
hang-um

RE: We need some names?
I think if you add some JAIL time and ,yes, stiffer fines , it will stop some of the idiots. We as hunters need to be policing our own ranks. Too many guys I know are afraid of retaliation from the slobs if they were to turn poachers and law breakers in. So many incidents go unnoticed.
This is a sad thing IMO. I for one would have no problem detaining a poacher or reporting an incident. I'll be happy to testify if the need be. As you can tell, this gets me PO'ed. Does anyone know if poaching is a felony?? |
