Boy Scouting

I was just curious how many people here grew up involved in scouting. This upcoming weekend is Scout Sunday, and we had a service this past weekend to honor our old Scoutmaster who just stepped down; and our pastor (and current Scoutmaster) did a little test:

He had all the people who were/or currently are in scouts stand up
Then he had all the parents of people who are/were stand up
Then he had spouses/other family members of scouts stand up
After this question, about 90% of the congregation were standing.

I found that really cool, as I grew up in scouting, climbed through the ranks from a cubby, received my Eagle Scout in late 2005 and am currently an Asst. Scoutmaster for my old troop. I look back at my years in scouting and know how much better of a person it made me and how it directly has effected my love for the outdoors and in-turn, my love for archery and bowhunting. So has anyone else here had their love for the outdoors influenced by Scouting?

Also, have any of ya'll gotten your own kids into scouting? Thought about helping a local troop?

My Scouting days were a long time ago, but it was great. I have always Loved the outdoors so it was natural for me to get involved in scouting.

im more of a girl scout myself....:D

in all seriousness, i never got into the scouts or anything...didnt know anyone that was in gradeschool, and was a pretty shy kid that didnt like to do things...kinda wish i was now...good way to make a resume look good...lots of volunteer work to put down alot of times, and shows your dedication and commitment to something...

I'm a little surprised at the lack of responses on this, I would have thought there were more scouters on here. Interesting...

My brother and I were involved in the scout program back in the early 60's , almost made it to the eagel rank.
Attended two ( Scout - O - Rama's ) one of them was at Moreen state park Pa. and the other was somewhere in South Dakota.

I was a Platoon Sgt of a Marine Corp Infantry Platoon. After which I became a "different type of SCOUT";) for the remainder of my tour. The kind that uses an M40A3

No Boy "Scouting" in my past, although...some of my Marines were former Scouts.
Well I can certainly respect that! :D;) Some of my closest friends are either serving currently or have just recently gotten home. I respect anyone that volunteers. Thank You for your service.

I was a scout for 5 years or so, made it to Eagle Scout. It is only part of the reason that I love the outdoors. I think that growing up in the outdoors was the main reason. I was going to try to get involved with a local troop but work and school is going to keep me consumed for the next year.

I was until high school. Then varsity bball, schoolwork, DeMolaysand (ahem)females didn't leave me much free time to carry on with it. Two merit badges short of Eagle. Ordeal member of Order of the Arrow.

RE: Boy Scouting

I grew up in the sticks. We hunted and fished and swam in the creek everyday all day. Seriously, we were outside doing some of it. We always said we didn't have time to come out of the woods to go play scout. LOL Actually, the money for uniforms for a family of 4 boys was better spent on bullets and food. We were dirt poor really. When I grew up I also took up scouting for a few years. Ironically, probably my time spent in the woods hunting ended up more valuable to me than scouting would have. At least it played out that way for a couple years in South East Asia. First Squadron First Cavalry.... Scouts Out.

I agree, it has changed even in through the years I've been involved. It has gotten much more political on all levels and that p*sses me off beyond belief. It is supposed to be about teaching life values and outdoor skills, unfortunately it doesn't always work like that anymore.

I was a scout. that is where i developed my love for being in the woods. I now have two boys in scouting and my oldest really loves the camping and being in the woods.
I help out with the troop and go with my son camping, I really enjoy being out there teaching the kids stuff. This year was i tried something differentand it payed off.
I got up early while camping with the scouts and went for a walk through the woods with my bow . ended up stalking a deer and shooting it all before breakfast. after that
i went and followed the blood trail and recovered the deer. that night we had venison on the grill. great weekend

I've heard this from a lot of girls who had brothers/parents involved in Boy Scouts. Did you ever try joining a Venture Crew?

I went from Cub Scouts to being a Boy Scout until middle school and then got interested in girls.Even thoughmy parents would have no part of it other than drop me off and pick me up I still went. Same with hunting. As I was growing up, guns were not allowed in the house and hunting was out of the question. Going outdoors meant going golfing not fishing or hunting. In 1998, I got hurt in the woods and I was all alone. Without mytraining from Boys Scouts, I may not be here today.Although my oldest son quit before becoming an eagle, he went though it and is now in the Air Force. It is a great organization. My youngest will have nothing to do with it....he doesn't think it cool, even though he loves to go fishing, camping and hunting with me. Our church and the company I work for are very active with the organization.

I remember the survival course I took while I was still a youth member in B.S. The person who ran the course was an ex-Navy Seal. Looking back at it, he deffinitely had some PTSD going on! But I learned a ton and still remember how to do most everything he taught us.

I was coming down from a tree, setting up my tree stand. My wedding ring got caught on one of the screw in steps as I was hopping off the last step.It ripped my finger off. Talk about pain, panic and lots of blood. Luckily I got out of the woods and found a house with somebody home that coulddrive me to E/R. Lesson learned...I no longer go into the woods alone.

I've heard of other stories where the ring got stuck and pulled the finger off. one was on a basket ball net and the other i think was a NASA pilot that got it caught on the door of a plane while on the ground when he jumped out,
that is why i don't wear any jewelry when i work or sports activity

I was a scout in the 60's. Cub, Webalos, and Boy Scouts. Just recently set it up for the scouts to use my camp grounds in the summer. The scouts are a great program for building morals and mores in the future leaders of this country. The wife and I even got invited to a jamboree this month.

I was in the boy scouts. I was an Eagle scout and I tell ya if there is one thing I miss from my childhood is scouts. I went to the National boy scout Jamboree in Fort AP Hill in Virginia in 1993 I believe can't remember. I will get back into it as a assistant scoutmaster if I ever have a boy. I have 3 girls now and my wife is pregnant with the forth want find out what it is until 2 more months. Me, my Dad, and my little brother are all Eagle scouts. It is a reat accomplishment and one that not a lot of kids this days get.

I was in Scouting for ten years (Cub,Webelo,Boy Scout, and Explorer) in the late sixties and early-mid seventies. I have a lot of fond memories of Scouting. My son just started as a Tiger Cub last fall and really enjoys it. I hope that he stays in for a while....I kind of enjoy being around it again.

That's really cool Grizz. I'm glad to see people getting their kids involved. I think many youngsters care way too much about what other young people think of scouting.

RE: Boy Scouting

I owned a couple of IH Scouts, does that count?

I was a Brownie, then a Junior girl scout and then a 'regular' girl scout. :D

Brownies and Juniors was fun tho' we certainly didn't do cool stuff like the Boy Scouts. We did go horseback riding once a year, which was really cool because we weremostly citykids. Mostly we did 'girly' stuff. Cooking, sewing, crafts, etc.. (tho' I did bring my bow and arrows to one meeting and showed the othergirls how to make a deadfall trap at a cookout. [8D]) When I was old enough to switch to the 11-17 group of girl scouts, I only went for a couple months. The group was very poor and there really wasn't anything to do. [&o]

Each year I go to the Trailblazers program and volunteer to teach archery to Boy Scouts from the inner-city. For a lot of these kids, it's their first exposure to bb-guns, fishing and archery. I highly recommend any of you to consider helping them out.
