Need a tree stand
What is a good climbing tree stand to get? I would like to get the safest, easiest to set up and climb, and light weight. I'm not going to be able to buy multiple tree stands so I am looking to get 1 good one but not the most $$$$.
|
RE: Need a tree stand
I would highly recommend a summit in the aluminium. safe ,durable , and the most comfortable stand i have used . worth the money. Don't buy a cheap one you will get what you pay for . I like them light as possible to carry in
|
RE: Need a tree stand
Buy my Summit Bullet Backpacker (it's the Viper model that folds down flat). It's been in one tree one time.
$200 + shipping......wait.....I'll ship it to you for $200. YES.....it's the aluminum (higher end) model. Ask these guys about them. |

RE: Need a tree stand
i have a summit open shot.....its only 14 lbs and simple to use.....oh and very comfortable
|
RE: Need a tree stand
ORIGINAL: DropTine249 Go with a Summit, aluminum frame. Its going to run you around $300, but worth every last penny. They are light, quiet to carry & set up. The platform is really quiet and of good size. They dont make alot of noise climbing, either. If you have the cash, buy a Summit. Their customer service is second to none, in my opinion/experience. |
RE: Need a tree stand
That's a steel model.
Check for the lighter version;) |
RE: Need a tree stand
I haven't used it yet, but I just got my Equalizer stand. Very impressed with the quality. I have owned a Summit also and they are good quality, and had a Lone Wolf sit and climb, also very high quality but the most in $$$.

RE: Need a tree stand
that price it has to be steel, good stand just heavier.
I got my summit Razor that the front bar swings out of the way for 175 used. it was an older guy that used it once and then realized a climber wasn't for him. said he is going to stick with a ladder stand |
RE: Need a tree stand
In my opinion go with the lone wolf, it is super quiet, easy to use and very sturdy. The price is a little high but you said you will only use one stand. Remember you get what you pay for!
|
RE: Need a tree stand
Lightest
Strongest Easiest to setup belongs to one stand and one stand only Lone Wolf Climber Sit N Climb Bullet packer is nice, but it has parts that can be lost. Lone Wolf has no parts that can fall off. If you are a large guy, I would say go with Summit. Lone Wolf's are great, but not the most comfortable IMO |
RE: Need a tree stand
Lone Wolf, then Equalizer, then Summit.
|
RE: Need a tree stand
Lone Wolf, there's the best and there's all the rest.;)
|
RE: Need a tree stand
Thanks for the Lone Wolf tip. Haven't heard about them yet. I'll check out their site. The whole "no parts to fall off" is a definite price point!
|
RE: Need a tree stand
I would like to spend under $200. Alpha or Assault?
|
RE: Need a tree stand
Bullet packer is nice, but it has parts that can be lost. Lone Wolf has no parts that can fall off. 1. What part can fall off? 2. Who here has sat in a Summit Bullet Backpacker/Viper.....AND a Lone Wolf.....and would choose the LW over the Summit for comfort? Interested in these responses....;) I sometimes sit for 6+ hrs on stand. I wouldn't DREAM of sitting in a LW that long. NO WAY. |
RE: Need a tree stand
Depends on what top you choose Gmmat. I can sit in my LW sit and climb top all day. The hand-climber is ideal for shorter in and out hunts.
|
RE: Need a tree stand
Just curious of how people who've used both would rank them for comfort, GR8. I sold the LW I had after 2 hunts. I wouldn't sit in that thing for more than a couple hours on a bet.
When I have to think about how long I'm gonna be in the woods......based on the stand I've chosen.....I made a poor choice. To each his own. |
RE: Need a tree stand
I am planning on getting a LW hang-on and climbing sticks this year just to add to my arsenal but I can't imagine anything being anymore comfortable than my Viper.
|
RE: Need a tree stand
So are the Summits a lot more comfortable? Comfort is important like you said for long waits. Please attach links or model number/name for recommended tree stands. Like I said, under $200 would make me happy

RE: Need a tree stand
I can't sit in any stand for 6 hrs. straight , there is just no way for me. Maybe 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. I've owned a Summit Cobra, Ol Man Grand, Loggy Bayou Stalker, Equalizer, Lone Wolf sitnclimb and hand climber. Most comfy is Summit followed by Loggy, Equalizer, Ol Man, then Lone Wolf. But I don't base my choice in climbers on comfort alone. To me the Lone Wolf is the highest quality climber hands down and the new seat for 2008 looks very much improved.
LostIntheWoods...the Alpha and Assault are not climbing stands, they are hangons. |
RE: Need a tree stand
I like my LW Alpha, this stand gets me in locations that I cannot get with climbers! I've sat in this stand all day with no problems!
|
RE: Need a tree stand
My mistake with the definition. I want a tree stand that I can carry in and set up without a ladder. So hangon, I guess.

RE: Need a tree stand
Go to a reputable dealer (if that's feasible) and put your butt in a few. Tell me what you think after you've sat in a Summit and ANY other model.
The Summits have a drawback (if you wanna call it that). The really comfortable ones have a rail (that you sit on, while climbing). You will NOT be able to shoot from a seated position in these stands.....but I've killed 14 whitetails out of one of these in the last two seasons.....and a hinderance it is NOT. What it does give you.....is peace of mind when you feel like taking a siesta;). Some of the best naps I've ever taken were waiting on shooting light on cool mornings. I get to my stand sites at least 1-1.5 hrs before first light.....and the snoozability is nice. I have no idea of what these guys are talking about......when they say it has "parts" that can fall off. No idea.....and I've logged over 100 climbs in mine in the last 2+ seasons. That claim is simply false. Chec with your buddies and see who's using what. Go sit your butt in a few of them (if that's possible). Think about sitting in there for several hours.....and make an educated decision. Good luck. |
RE: Need a tree stand
Lost, do you plan on leaving the stand up or will you be taking it in and out every trip? If you are going to be taking it in and out every time you hunt I suggest the Alpha or Assault along with the Lone Wolf climbing sticks.
If you plan on leaving the stand up for quite a while I suggest something cheaper even if its heavier like a Gorilla or several other brands. The new Loggy Bayou Predator stand looks to be a good stand as well. |
RE: Need a tree stand
Take it with me.
|
RE: Need a tree stand
My experience, I've had a Lone Wolf hand climber, Summit Razor and API grand slam. I sold the LW hand climber, I'm over 50 and 220 lbs. wasn't easy for me to use at all....[:'(]I love both the API and the Summit Razor, I can't set all day in both climbers. I do feel that the API carries better on my back because the cables on the summit stick up and catch low hanging branches while walking through the woods.
|
RE: Need a tree stand
If the cables on your summit stick up.....you're carrying it wrong!

A buddy of mine got one and I was very impressed. I have a couple of friends that have the hand climber and that is not very comfortable, but the sling seat climber is very comfy. I couldn't compare it to the Summit on a long sit because I haven't used it for a hunt, but side-by-side for short sits they are comparable. I like my Summit though. I think I'm going to get some new shrink tubing for the cables and the silent skin for it and get a few more seasons out of it. |
RE: Need a tree stand
No gaskets, Bry....but when i see something blatantly false....I'll point it out.
I'm not telling anyone to go buy a Summit. I don't care what you buy.....as I have no stake in the matter. I'd just hate to see someone go buy something based on false information.....because these things aren't cheap. I'm replacing the cables on my Viper, this fall (new shrink tubing). I don't have the Summit skins on the Viper (they'r eon the Bullet).....but I did have the platform sprayed with Rhino lining when I got it two+ seasons ago. VERY silent, now. |

RE: Need a tree stand
ORIGINAL: mobow I beg to differ. I've shot 3 deer from my Viper, while sitting down, and 1 turkey. That rail is a perceived problem that's not a problem at all. I've never found that front rail to be in the way of a thing. Your extended bow arm will bring the bow in front of that rail.... Jeff, I know what you're saying, just teasing ya.:D That Rhino liner idea sounds interesting. I don't think it would work on the Bullet because of the moving parts though. What do you think? How is it in cost comparison to the Summit Skins? |
RE: Need a tree stand

RE: Need a tree stand
Good for you, Mobow. I found out last year that I had my Viper seat adjusted all wrong for bowhunting. It SHOULD be adjusted so that you're seated very close to the bar. That would take away from the comfort.....but it WOULD allow you to shoot past the rail (as you described) fairly easily. It would also allow you to get to a standing position more readily.
I keep mine slinking low......because I sleep better in it that way.;) Bry....I wouldn't even have them spray the Bullet back that far on the platform if I was gonna have it sprayed. Also....if I were gonna have it sprayed.....I wouldn't have put on the skins. |
RE: Need a tree stand
I think it has to do with comfort for us older guys, If your young and tough it doesn't matter as much. I can't sit on a hard small seat very long. I like my summit viper, I'm 52 and have carried my stand in as far a a mile with no problem. LW stands are made well and work well, just not for me. Good Luck on your choice.

RE: Need a tree stand
I never thought this post would turn into a fistwaving discussion. Awesome
!Seriously, I appreciate all the input. I am younger and can deal with a less than plush seat but I don't want a thorn in the bum either. This is how I see it: Most important to less important: [ol][*]ease of use[*]weight[*]price[*]durability[*]comfort (you canmodify to make it more comfortable)[/ol] ...sorry, just like this smiley! |
