Uh the biggest ones I can think of off the top of my head:

1. ALWAYS treat a gun as if it were loaded. "The safety is on" is not a reason for acting stupid.

2. Know/Identify what you're shooting at as what you're hunting.

3. Know what's beyond your target.

4. Don't climb a tree with a loaded gun/wait til you're in your stand to load up.

5. Wear your harness.

6. Let someone know where you'll be and when you'll be back.

7. Biggest one of all... use common sense.

Good job Englum, excellent advice!! Let me add one here too...

Get yourself a compass and learn how to use it so you don't end up lost.

You should be able to get a hunter's safety handbook for free from your state. Check with your DNR type organization (the people who control hunting in your state).

Ask mom to help you find the book and order it.

Read the book. She'll know you're serious, then.

Good luck.

Treat every gun as if it were loaded, treat every gun as if it were loaded, treat every gun as if it were loaded
Always point your muzzle in a safe direction, always point your muzzle in a safe direction, Always point your muzzle in a safe direction
Keep your fingeroff the trigger until your ready to "fire", Keep your finger off the trigger until your ready to "fire"
Be sure of your target and whats beyond, be sure of your target and whats beyond, be sure of your target and whats beyond
Once you "fire your weapon...you can't take it back, once you fire your weapon you can't take it back

Sorry for the repetitiveness, but it will help learn. These guys have great knowlege in hunting here, you came to a great spot to get some advice. GMMAt is right, get your mom involved to help you out, maybe even take the course with you...I would be fun. Good luck

Along with what has already been said, here in Md, there are also questions on types of gun actions, ie: pump, semi-auto, break-action, etc. Also are questions on habitat required for game animals, as well as some questions on black powder guns and archery. What's the legal amount (square inches) of blaze orange required in your state......Check for resources online for your state.

You and your Mom should take the class together! This way she'll have a good understanding of what you'll be going thru!

http://www.hunter-ed.com/mi/ that is the website for the michigan online hunter saftey course. you can read the handbook and take the practice test for free. you can go to www.michigan.gov/dnrto see if there is a class in your county or one close to you that offers just the online feild segment. if there is then you can take the test online for $15 and print out your certifcate and take it to the class. you will have to take one more test at the class but it is the same questions as the one you took online.
