RE: More challenging Whitetail or Muley
I live in an area that has both and quite frankly, I am surprised by the responses as in my opinion, there is no comparison.
Muleys are usually hunted spot and stalk and yes this method of hunting is more difficult than an elevated or ground stand "ambush" type hunting. And yes, most of us have more opportunities to kill a whitetail as compared to muleys due to their numbers, but a muley isn't even close to being in the same league as a whitetail. If hunting method is the same and population is the same, the whitetail wins as more challenging hands down. As far as patternig, if muleys are in an area that their main food source is an agricultural crop, they are just as patternable if not more so than a whitetail, IMO. |

Typically, muledeer are harder to kill for the simple fact that most of them live in terrain that is harder to hunt. |

Most muleys are in locations where it is open and it is hard to get close to them. Whitetails you just find a trail put up a stand and the deer walks by and you shoot it. Thats why i think muleys are more of a challenge

RE: More challenging Whitetail or Muley
I say mature mulies are harder to get a close shot at....but as for the posts about how whitetail are more patternable, think about all the sandhills bucks here in Nebraska or Kansas or Oklahoma. There aren't that many whitetail in the sandhills but the bucks that are there are usually the mature ones that know to stay out there where noone will bother them. These whitetails are the most unpatternable animals I've seen. So overall I would say they are in a class of their own.

frog5533 I hunt almost every year and have for 6-7 years in Hoxie, small world huh ? Do you know anyone from Hoxie ?
If you want a P&Y buck, whitetails are easier. The thing about muley's are that geographically their range isn't what a whitetails is, and public vs private lands to hunt them makes it tougher. Toss in tag allocations and the enviroments they live in (wide open prarie or 13,000 feet on a mtn top) and IMO a "trophy" muley is by far the bigger challenge |
