Hide on racks
Had these racks for a couple years now, they've been hanging in the garage. What would be the best way to get the hide off of them? Would boiling them still be the way to go?

RE: Hide on racks
I'd say boil them would be the way to go.

RE: Hide on racks
Yeah boil them

RE: Hide on racks
You could probably soak them in water to soften em up and cut off the hide and as much other stuff as possible. Then rub them with a mix of salt and borax to dry everything out.
Or soak them in peroxide after you have the hide off that will loosen up the flesh and bleach the bone. |
RE: Hide on racks
Boiling will only do so much to clean the bone off. You really just need to get in there with a knife and cut through the dried leather to get the skin off. It is so dried and tight that it will need to be sliced before it will ever come off, especially around the bases.

RE: Hide on racks
So do you think if I cut the leather and then let them SOAK in some real hot water for a while, and then cut some more that thatwould work?

RE: Hide on racks
![]() I just let it soak for a while in some real hot water. Used some dish soap to kind loosen it up some. I just kept prying it up a little at a time with the knife and eventually got it real lose and just cut around the bases and then when back and cleaned it all up. Turned out pretty decent I think. This was the first time I had ever tried takin the hide off of one. |
RE: Hide on racks
hot or cold doesnt matter just soak them good for a couple days, then use a very sharp blade like a razor blade,

RE: Hide on racks
Those are a couple of nice racks, those deer HAD to be related!!!

RE: Hide on racks
Like the other said, soak it in water. Then I use a flathead screwdriver and a pair of plyers to peel it off.
