The ass shot??
Has anyone ever taken the ass shot on a deer? I have heard this is really a devistating shot, and very easy to make because of the large artery and many veins in the rump.
I ask because I passed this shot on the biggest buck I have ever seen in the woods 2 years ago. This big bad momba jomba was 15 yards for about a minute broad side and I could not move or draw because he was looking in my direction. then he turned away and stood there Showing me his jewles for about another minute before walking away. I felt good I let the shot pass, but offten cry at the lost oppertunity. edit: Please refrain from using symbols ie @ to skirt the profanity filter, if it's allow it's allowed, if not do not skirt it, it could have been deleted. |
RE: The @ss shot??
The buck my dad took this year as an accidental ham shot. String caught his sleeve at the shot and threw it right -- right into the buck's back hip.
He wound up hitting the main artery and we found the buck about 50 yards, piled up. Not a shot I would advocate, but it is lethal. |
RE: The @ss shot??
I hope you are joking.
|
RE: The @ss shot??
Oh its lethal alright, so is putting your b@lls in a vice grip, but you wouldnt do that would you?
|
RE: The @ss shot??
My step father will take the shot if he can. Henever has lost one and he too says and I seen, they only go about 50 yards, and lots of blood,,,all of the blood it seams.

RE: The @ss shot??
To me thats not a shot opportunity so the arrow stays put.

RE: The @ss shot??
Aaahhh the texas heart shot, haha. Not a shot to take in anyones book but I've done it once by accidentwith a doe that stepped forward when I released. They don't go far thats for sure but if you miss the artery your SOL and the deer is wounded to die of infection later. My buddy made this shot this year too by accident. The doe spun away from him when he shot jumping his string and he hit her 1 inch from her pooper and drove it up in deep killin her within 80 yards of shot. Done it with guns on drives before too by accident. You never shoot for there but it sure is nice when you get lucky and that artery saves your mistake. WCL

RE: The @ss shot??
With a bow, not one I'd consider.
I have used it as a follow up shot with a rifle with great success. |
RE: The @ss shot??
![]() There is definitely a large enough artery running through the hips that the shot can be lethal, but again... I wouldn't advocate taking this shot. |
RE: The @ss shot??
There have obviously been a lot of animals killed with less than ideal shots. One of my buddies put a perfect gut shot on whitetail buck back in November with a Rage two blade. Deer only made it 50 yards before collapsing from loss of blood. If you look at the rear end of a deer, there are areas where a broadhead could pass without hitting any big arteries. There is also some very heavy bone mass back here that can stop a broadhead cold. Not a responsible shot, IMO.

RE: The @ss shot??
Nota shot I would purposely take with a bow.A person I know purposely reamed a big buck several years ago,the broadhead ended up sticking out of the bucks sternum.Didn't approve of it then, don't now but talk about penetration!

RE: The @ss shot??
Well, not so fast there young guns. LOL I was reading a magazine article about 25 years ago and a bowhunter complained about deer always stopping behind trees or just with their butt stuck out. The author(I believe was Fred Bear but don't hold me to it) or.. it could have been Jim Dougherty. It was one of the old guys. He suggested to the hunter that a broadside shot through both hams would generally dispatch a deer quite quickly. Well being young and impetuous I found myself one day with a nervous deer that stepped out into a peanut field and immediately went back in. He skirted behind me in the brush and came back out on the other side where I think he got the faintest whiff of something a mif. He stepped back into the brush with only his butt sticking out. Remembering the article I had read just a day or so before I drew and aimed for center ham. At the shot the deer whirled back into the field. He made two labored bounds and then went to a walk. The arrow was sticking out both sides. He walked out into the peanut field for about 80 yards and then angled back towards a wood line. By the time he got to the woodline each step was a struggle. As soon as his head hit the woods he just dropped like a rock, straight down and never moved. In all he covered maybe 200 yards. It looked like someone had taken a five gallon pail of blood and poured it all over the peaunuts. I mean I got wet pants from the blood tracking him out. I had seen him fall from the stand but Ialways walk the blood trails for practice and observation. It was a devistating hit for sure but it made a mess of the meat to clean up.
I'd never take the shot again. But back then we only had Fred Bear and Jim to play ethics posse.[8D] They were the Gods we aspired to be like. I accomplished what I tried to do but wouldn't do it again. To addmore fire for the ethics posse, the deer was straddling a premeasured distance marker I had placed in the field. He was straddling my 40 yard wood dowel with blaze orange paint on it. LOL I know, 40yards, butt shot and all that. At the time I was shooting a lot of NFAA tournaments. I had placed 5 rows of wood dowels out in the field like that oldstar shot fan. I had stakes out to 70 yards.[&:] At that time and place if he was straddling the 70 yard stake I'd of flung one at him. Let me have it. LOL |
RE: The @ss shot??
You better be joking, accident is one thing but the odds of hitting htat artery ares slim nad should never be counted on for a humane kill
|
RE: The @ss shot??
It a very deadly shot. It's a bigger target than the lungs or heart as well. Dead is dead right? Who gives a $h!t whether or not you pull off a "TV shot" on a deer as long as you kill the deer as quickly as possible.
|
RE: The @ss shot??
I'm not joking at all. I read it, I shot it and it was deadly. There are alot of major veins besides the femoral artery running through the butt. I just happened to catch on of the arteries too. I said I wouldn't do it now, but at that time it was what they put in a magazine. You got to remember you could bow hunt a whole year and never see another bowhunter 25 years ago. It was all trial and error. There wasn't much else.

RE: The @ss shot??
I dont think id try it
|
RE: The @ss shot??
I've seen people get lucky with this shot as well, all though they weren't trying to hit the deer there but it worked. Its a bad decision in my opinion if one were to take that shot!

RE: The @ss shot??
25 years ago would have been 1983. I started bowhunting in 1979, I guess I should feel lucky that I was forced to attend a Bowhunter Education Class even back then before getting a license. :)

RE: The @ss shot??
Not a shot I would take on purpose...I have however hit a deer in the butt with a broadhead. Took him around 25 minutes to die a slow death....he bled like hell but I could see him walking, laying, and thrashing around for nearly 25 minutes within 45 yards of my stand. I couldnt shoot him again and I felt helpless in my effort to end his suffering. Not something I would ever recommend and I hope I never do again in my hunting life.

RE: The @ss shot??
when i was a kid, my first shot EVER on a whitetail with a bow, I hit that artery and the 8pt went 40 yards and died......I was very LUCKY....it was a terrible shot!
|
RE: The @ss shot??
Absolutlely not!! That is a good way to get the antis the fuel they need. I know that a bad shot happens on accident, but to shoot a deer in the rear on purpose?? Come on, noone should even think about that.
|
RE: The @ss shot??
I have enjoyed a few arse shots, wait wrong board[&:];):D
|
RE: The @ss shot??
I HAVE TO ADMIT, WHEN I FIRST STARTED BOW HUNTING 10YRS AGO, I DID HIT A DOE IN THE REAR AND SHE DROPPED AFTER 30YARDS. WASN'T A GOOD SHOT BACK THEN. I WAS TRYING FOR A LUNG SHOT. I WOULDN'T EVER DO IT ON PURPOSE. I THINK IT WAS MY THIRD DEER EVER. MY HUNTING BUDDIES ROAD ME FOREVER OVER IT. MUCH BETTER SHOT NOW:D.
|
RE: The @ss shot??
I have seen it work and I have seen it fail, butI won't take that shot. About ten years ago I shot a very nice 8 point. Just as I released the arrow, the bucklunged forward and the arrow sunk into his hind quarter. Never could find that deer, blood trail stopped 200 yards out. A guy I know shot the same deer during gun season, the broadhead lodged in the hind quarter and healed over pretty good. So that shot doesn't always work.
|
RE: The @ss shot??
I would not do it on purpose unless I was DESPERATE for meat. I have shot deer through the hindquarters by accident that died quickly. For me the bottom line is IT'S YOUR DEER. Shoot itwhere ever YOU want to! I don't care to clean up gut shot deer myself.
